Berrian held out

October 9th, 2008 – 2:04 PM by Judd Zulgad

A day after limiting Bernard Berrian because of a knee injury, the Vikings decided to have the receiver not do any work in practice this afternoon. The session is going on right now and Berrian was wearing a ski cap as he watched his teammates. Berrian hurt his knee in practice last Thursday but was able to play against the Saints on Monday night and caught six passes for 110 yards and a touchdown.

Berrian also has been bothered by a sore big toe on his right foot this season and it’s likely the Vikings think it would be best to limit his practice reps. The only other player who was sitting out was linebacker Erin Henderson, who suffered a concussion on Monday. Henderson said he did not suffer the injury on the monster hit he took on a Saints punt return and instead said he was injured earlier. He did not inform the coaching staff that he had a headache, however, and that’s why he wasn’t taken out.

Oh no, we can’t win without Berrian!

Last pro-bowl punter for Vike was Mitch Berger:

. could handle kickoffs
. could punt and placekick
. could punt outdoors
. holder for converts & Field goal
. occasionally would try to tackle.

Tice got rid of Berger w/o delay and he has ended up with the Steeler. Made good account of himself on Monday night on final kickoff when Tomlin’s placekicker was injured. He hadn’t even practised kick offs.

Couldn’t understand what problem Tice had w/ Berger. Mitch had a later injury (the groin muscle separated from the pubic bone). He can’t handle regular kickoff motion.

Assume the punting tryouts will be held indoors so wind conditions won’t affect Ferraro’s judgments

Bones, really?

Yep, Mitch looked good Monday night. Berrian wearing a ski cap? What’s he gonna do, go hold up a 7-11? Just be ready for the game, you play better hurt anyway!

I saw Berrian on a Twins broadcast during the infamous homestand against the ChiSox. He was wearing a massive diamond-encrusted “B” on a big gold chain. Carrying around all that weight can’t be good on the joints!

I saw that one to…LOL!!!

Bone…Berrians backup up his yap last weeks didn’t he?

Bones says:

October 9th, 2008 at 2:52 pm

Yeah, he did Fred. But the 4th-highest paid receiver in the game should score his first TD of the year before the 5th game…

Your a bad bad man Bone. Based on what you know about the team now, whats do you think their finals record will be?

Bones, the diamond encrusted kok-ring that my alter-ego was wearing.

Bones says:

Somewhere around 7-9, 8-8, 9-7. Just good enough to get another mid-round pick in the first round but not good enough to make the playoffs.

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

October 9th, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Fred thinks 8-8 is about right. Fred thinks we will see Tjax within 3 weeks. Old Gus can’t stands upright many more games with the over rated O lines allowing free runs at the old fossil. Gus is not very good anyway. If we look at next year, does your guy Favre end up wearing purples? Fred understands he has an out after 1 year playing for the JETS. Fred hates Brent Favre.

Bones says:

October 9th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

Favre will still be under contract with the Jets.

akvikesfan says:

For what it’s worth, i think we’ll end up at more like 10-6. We’ll be lucky if we make the playoffs, though. With the way we’ve been coached again this year, 6-10 is a real possibility.

Bones,

So now you’re ripping on Berrian? After last year we needed someone who could stretch the field. He was the number one receiver available in free agency. Was he overpaid? Yes, but that was the going rate at that time in the NFL world of crazy money. Is he off to a poor start? Yes, but this is the vaunted Chili offense.

Here’s the deal. You’re the same guy who would have ripped the Vikes if they had NOT signed Berrian. You my boy are playing both sides of the fence.

Bones is playing the “Revisionist History” card. Pathetic!

2Minute Tommy says:

Would the real Restub please stand up… We had a receiver that could stretch the field and drop passes. It didn’t work out. Berrian has been known for his dropped passes. Has anyone other than me ever watched a Bears game? The guy was way overrated and if he was the “best” receiver available, we should have let hoim walk and drop passes for another team. Berrian should be ripped and the ToA should get ripped for overpaying the guy.

2Minute Tommy says:

And I’ll say it again just so you get it through your thick skulls!

Bones says:

You can dig through the old blog posts and easily find that I opposed the Berrian signing from day 1.

Bones says:

October 9th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Who would you rather have, Berrian and his cap-killing contract or a D.J. Hackett-type FA who you could’ve signed for a 2-3 year contract at a VERY reasonable salary. You get about the same production either way…

akvikesfan says:

October 9th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

Overpaid, yes.

Injuries were a concern when he was signed, and now we’re seeing why.

Three weeks ago everyone was blaming TJack. Berrian has been better (when playing) with Gus on the field. I think everyone should stick to TJack being the problem, and give Berrian a little more time to prove himself while playing with a competant QB.

In three years (if he plays decent) the size of his contract will look like a steal, same goes for Jared Allen.

Berrian is better suited to be a number two WR. With any luck Rice will step up to be a number one, or we’ll find one in FA or draft.

Berrian is not the problem on this team, at least not this week.

Bones says:

October 9th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

And don’t bother digging up the stats, I realize that Hackett hasn’t done anything this year either. I’m simply looking for the most bang for the buck. Berrian hasn’t come close to playing up to the standards that justify such a ridiculous salary!

jay says:

October 9th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

The thing about Berrian is they had to know about his bad toe before they signed him, he had it last year with the Bearlys it just seems like it’s worse this year. He can make some amazing catches but he’s way inconsistent. I blame Chili for Berrian’s drops.

akvikesfan says:

October 9th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Berrian = 17 catches, 305 yards, 1TD with TJack and Gus throwing to him.

Hackett = 10 catches, 131 yards, 0TD with DelHomme throwing.

No question who is a better player.

Bones says:

October 9th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t care less if Zygi fritters his money away foolishly. My critiques about the Berrian contract are totally about the cap problems that it could create. Just think of a hypothetical situation were to arise where we could trade for or sign a marquee quarterback next offseason. Are we going to have the financial flexibility to do so? There is a lot of money tied up in 4-5 guys on this team!

jay says:

October 9th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Daily Norseman had a highlight clip a few months ago of BB’s catches with Chicago last season, he had some ridiculous catches.

RETSUB SEMYHR says:

October 9th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Sure, I’ll spend the next couple of days looking thru old posts. I’ll get right on that.

By the way, did anyone notice I can occasionally respond to others without pure anger and not calling everyone moron or idiot?

Too bad the fake Buster can’t.

FIRE CHILDRESS NOW!!!!!

jay says:

October 9th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

It’s not fair, Detroit has more WRs than they need and they’re not going anywhere this year anyway. We should get Calvin Johnson.

jay says:

October 9th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

And good job Retsub, you’re being much nicer.

RETSUB SEMYHR says:

October 9th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Bones says, “where we could trade for or sign a marquee quarterback next offseason.”

Bones, you’ve got to be kidding me! Please tell me you’re better than this? There are only 10-12 marquee QBs in this league as it stands now. No team is going to give up their QB via trade or free agency if set QB is above average plus.

C’mon Bones, stop living in Paul Allen’s ducky and bunny world!

FIRE CHILDRESS NOW!!!!!

Fantasy Football Update: Palmer not starting, Winslow has “swollen testicles” says:

October 10th, 2008 at 1:43 pm

[…] In a surprise move, the Bengals are going to go with Ryan Fitzpatrick over Carson Palmer. The word is that Palmer could play, so one wonders why Cincy would go with Fitzpatrick instead. This is a downgrade for Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh…Kellen Winslow was hospitalized on Thursday with an “unspecified illness” (ProFootballTalk.com reports that it is “swollen testicles.” Oi!) and is questionable for Monday Night Football. The fact that he plays on Monday is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, he has an extra day to recover. On the other, it leaves fantasy owners wondering on Sunday morning who to start at TE. Keep an eye on the news on Saturday and if it looks like he’ll play, keep him in your lineup. For what it’s worth, “team insiders” expect him to play…Both Brian Westbrook and Reggie Brown are going to miss Sunday’s game against the 49ers. Correll Buckhalter is a good start in Westy’s place and Desean Jackson should see the bulk of extra work with Brown out…Marques Colston will return this week against the Raiders. Jeremy Shockey is very iffy. I wouldn’t count on him this week…Matt Hasselbeck continues to sit out of practice, but the team is expecting and hoping that he’ll play. He has a decent matchup this week, but if you have a similar option, it’s probably best to go with it…Roddy White missed practice on Thursday, but will likely play against the Bears on Sunday…Bernard Berrian has a tantalizing matchup with the Lions, but he has missed practice and is iffy. Keep an eye on this over the weekend…Jon Kitna is doubtful, and it looks like Dan Orlovsky will get the start. […]
