As Chip wrote on the previous blog, safety Madieu Williams was able to participate in practice today for the first time since he suffered a neck injury early in training camp. Williams took part on a limited basis but it was still a significant step. Coach Brad Childress and Williams both would not speculate when the veteran will return.
“It’s the first day,” Williams said of any possible timetable. “All I can do is continue to come out here [and practice]. It will be Coach Childress’ call [when he returns].”
Williams had been going through stetching exercises with the team for a few weeks before practice but that was it until today. Last week, he said he didn’t want to address his situation with the media until he returned to practice.
Williams said overall he “felt good” but admitted when “I put on my helmet for the first time it felt a little heavier then it used to.” Williams was wearing a neck brace at one point early this season but said he got rid of that “a while ago.”
While Williams might be a bit rusty on the field, he isn’t concerned about picking up the Vikings’ defensive system. He has spent plenty of time at Winter Park attending meetings. “I’ve been here every day,” he said. “I’m always in meetings and meeting with the coaches. In terms of the mental aspect I don’t think I’ve missed things at all.”
One thing about Williams’ situation remains a mystery. Exactly when was he hurt in training camp? There have been plenty of theories thrown around but that’s been about it. Williams didn’t provide much help on the issue saying he did not recall when it happened and just that he felt soreness in his neck.
Here is the Vikings’ injury report for today: Williams (neck), limited participation; WR Sidney Rice (knee), LP; RB Adrian Peterson (hamstring), LP; DE Ray Edwards (shoulder), LP; LB Vinny Ciurciu (knee), LP; RB Chester Taylor (foot), LP; OT Artis Hicks (elbow), full participation.
