Running back Adrian Peterson was limited in today’s practice because of a hamstring injury that could keep him out of Sunday’s game against Carolina. Peterson is listed as questionable on the Vikings injury report.
Peterson injured the hamstring in last Sunday’s game against the Colts. He was limited in practice Wednesday and did not take part in Thursday’s session. “It’s probably going to be a game-time type of decision,” coach Brad Childress said. “We’ll treat here for the next 48 hours and look at him before the game.”
Peterson, coming off a Pro Bowl performance as a rookie in 2007, leads the NFL with 263 yards rushing on 48 carries in two games. While the Vikings need a victory after an 0-2 start, they also don’t want to risk losing Peterson for the long term because of a significant injury to his hamstring. The Vikings also have a more than capable backup running back in veteran Chester Taylor, who rushed for 1,216 yards in 2006.
“You always want him to be able to protect himself,” Childress said when asked what his approach would be with any player suffering from a hamstring problem. “You always listen to the player. Obviously, there’s the evaluation, the data, the doctor. But you’re always looking to see, measuring strength and endurance and making sure that you don’t think that it’s an issue. Obviously, you don’t want to make it a chronic thing. That’s where the evaluation comes in. You listen to the player. Sometimes you have to protect the player from himself and err on the side of caution and sometimes you feel good about what you’re seeing and that he could go.”
Peterson was on the field at the start of practice but was not spotted as the players came off the field. He appeared briefly in the locker room during the media access period but did not talk with reporters before heading into the training room to get more treatment.
Peterson rushed for 1,341 yards on 238 carries with 12 touchdowns last season but missed two games because of a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee. Peterson dropped to the seventh pick of the 2007 draft because of concerns about his ability to stay healthy. He played only one complete season during his three years at Oklahoma and missed time because of ankle, shoulder and collarbone injuries.
Taylor has only nine rushing attempts in two games this season, gaining 37 yards. The Vikings have tried to keep him involved by using him on kickoffs and he also had caught four passes for 19 yards. Peterson and Taylor shared the workload at the start of last season but eventually Peterson took over as the starter.
Taylor did still see quite a bit of time as a third-down back and in two-minute situations because of concerns about Peterson’s blocking ability but this year Peterson has improved in that area.
“I’m not excited that he’s hurt,” Taylor said. “[But] it’s always a good feeling to go out there and play as much as I can to help my team win. But whatever they call on, whatever they want me to do, I’m going to go out there and do it.”
Childress also said whether wide receiver Sidney Rice plays on Sunday will be a game-time decision. Rice, who is listed as questionable, suffered a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last Sunday. He did limited work in Friday’s practice after being held out Wednesday and Thursday.
“We made progress every day,” Rice said, “and I’m feeling really good. We’ve got to see what coach thinks about it and the trainers and then go from there.”
Rice and Peterson will probably both be on the Metrodome turf early Sunday testing out their injuries. Asked if he was going to politic to play, Rice said, “I don’t know how much I can do but it’s going to be their decision.”
While safety Madieu Williams (neck) is out for a third consecutive week, the remainder of the players on the injury report are listed as probable. This includes wide receivers Aundrae Allison (foot) and Bernard Berrian (toe), left tackle Artis Hicks (elbow), safety Darren Sharper (shoulder), running back Maurice Hicks (foot) and defensive tackle Ellis Wyms (concussion).

thats bad news for my fantasy team…
Oh great. Thats exactly what we need. Chester is very good but not having AD is gonna make it a whole lot tougher to get this win. I know really hope Gus proves me right and is able to actually get Berrian involved
w/o AP, the Vikes and Chillidiot will be forced to pass more than 8 times in the first half. The receivers will come up big, Shank will actually catch a deep middle ball. CT will get his yards.
Vikes 20, Panthers 17.
GO VIKES!
the good news is that the panthers D is terrible outside of one pesky defensive end who seems to like the fast track of the dome…
Wasn’t it the Panthers that we beat with that fake field goal a couple years ago?
matty: yup, not to mention their injury report as of thursday was quite thick. if richard marshall can’t go, that’s good news for our wideouts.
I’m pretty sure that was Williamson’s only 100 yard game ever
Wow, the purple Kool Aid is flowing today! Anybody consider the fact we might be SCREWED without AP? Or that Gus may be as equally inept as TJack? Or that Shank will drop his usual TD pass? Or that we will announce every play before we run it again this week? Or that we will give up 4 more big plays on defense?
0-5, here we come!
(This is fun, Bones!)
i don’t think good news and our wideouts have appeared in the same blurb in about 4yrs…
Wow Bud, Peterson has a strained hammy and the Vikings are somehow going to lose 3 games this weekend to make us
0-5? Even for Vikings blogs you are a buzz kill.
Come on Bud. Taylor did run for like 160 yards against Oakland last year and had another 100 yard game against the ‘9ers. Do you really think anyone could look as inept as Jackson. have any of you guys seen the camera angle from the endzone on the pick he threw to Bigby to end the Packers game? Shianco was wide open and he threw the ball only about 15 feet out of his reach. I can’t wait to see NFL Matchup this week.I bet they break down the coaches film of the Colts game to point out all of the horrible passes he threw in that game. Gus was amazing when he started those 2 games here in ‘03. Now without Moss, I don’t expect the same type of production but Jackson has never had a game near as good as a whole lot that Frerotte has had in his career. If you move the ball 50 yards on a drive and then throw a pick, its just as good as not even getting a 1st down and punting from your 27 yardline
Matty - here’s how Big the win would be this week…
“How big was this win for you guys?”
“It was definitely BIG. I mean, if we would have lost, we would have been 0-3. I mean, now we are 1-2 and, hey, anything can happen. We have our confidence now, and we are just going to take it one game at a time. I definitely think this was big.”
Wow Bud. That is probably verbatim what will be said by at least one Viking if they do get the win this week. Thats pretty damn good. Maybe he really IS Bud Grant. Or maybe he bought the same book of sport cliches that all these athletes get when they sign their first contract. Either way, well done Bud
BGrant, was that a quote from last years Giants team?
Bud = flirting with the dark side?
2003 was a long time ago Benson. Again, I expect the quarterback stats to look about the same. That said, I am very happy I don’t have to see T-Joke under center this week…
I don’t expect the passing stats to change all that much. Its the running game that will benefit most because after Frerotte hits a pass or two they will realize they cant have all 11 guys playing the run as they would have with Jackson at QB. 200 yards and 2 scores from Frerotte would not surprise me very much at all.If we got that from the running game i wouldn’t be very surprised either. I’m gonna check out Frerottes profile on espn to see what he did last year is STL and 2006 in Mia
Bensons, the throw that Bigby picked was actually Shaincoe’s fault according to PA, he stopped on the run and did not man up to it while the kid took the brunt of the fans anger. I am not sure that was the case but hey, I thought I would mention it.
I am torn about this week, I still think that the baldheaded clown needs to leave now, not midseason or at the end, it is now Ziggy.
In Miami in ‘05 he had several games that are much better than anything anyone will ever see Jackson have.
25 47 360 53.2 7.66 47 2 1
and that was only one game. That was against the Patriots. Can anyone ever imagine Jackson doing that against a team like the Patriots?
Dude, PA is such a homer it is nauseating. I consider myself to be a homer but he doesn’t even know what he’s talking about most of the time. Just follows the company line because he has to work with those guys everyday, or close to it. I saw the angle from behind the QB. I’m just telling it like I saw it. If you saw what I did you would know what I mean. There is no way that possible could have been Shiancoes fault. He ran an out pattern and right after he made his cut Jackson threw the ball far out of his reach. There was no way possible anyone would have been able to make the catch and there is no way that running that route incorrectly could have led to that horribly inaccurate pass
What’s worse: Chilly’s coaching record, or Gus’ W/L?
A.A. is going to have a breakout day. 6 catches, 115 yds.
Go Vikes!
Allen has been talking up Jackson for years now. During the offseason he was saying we should sign McNair because he is black and so is Jackson. This would somehow make him a good mentor for Jackson. The difference is that McNair had talent.
If Allison plays you just might be right. I think Gus had more reps with him than he had with our other WRs because he was the backup.
There is no way the passing stats remain the same this week. Gus’ numbers will absolutely be better than 50% completion for 170 yards and 0 TD’s. Of course, when Gus’ numbers are better it’s because Childress FINALLY opened up the playbook and Jackson would of had the same numbers if Childress would have only called the same plays for Jackson. No wait, it’s because Peterson was injured so Childress had to call more passing plays. LOL.
The only difference is Gus will have more attempts and more interceptions. Maybe a few more yards. We gained nothing, and Bones has nothing. Terrible.
Here’s your best friend getting interviewed:
Seriously, Paul Allen is a moron. He is an excellent play by play guy but makes some of the stupidest statements on KFAN.
He is no Ray Scott, I’ll tell you that!
BTW, my 2:12 was sarcasm. I was just seeing what it felt like to look at all the possible things that could go wrong. (Actually, all those things COULD go wrong).
I AM pi$$ed, however, that Chili made me think that TJack had improved. He had 6 yards in one half, for crying out loud!! (And I am a little pi$$ed that Bones and Retsub were right, but I can eventually get over that.
So now it’s possibly no Peterson, no Jackson, no Rice, no McKinnie. Berrian is probable.
That’s five players we thought would be at 100% ,starting, and contributing.
Not good.
Actually, Kenny, no McKinnie and no Jackson might be good.
why the hell isnt childress listed on the injury report?
Brad’s injury is a pre-existing condition…couldn’t list it for insurance reasons.
The only reason Child-ish is not on the injury report is that his impairment is a permanent disability that he came to the Vikings with.
Although T-Jack was a failure, Child-ish leadership/positioning leaves us with a new QB who is older, slower, has a
Berrian was supposed to be deep threat but the only speed he’s shown is racing Visante to the bank to cash their checks.
We need some positive attitudes around here. You homies should start drinking the purple stuff, might change how you think……
Go Vikes
i wonder how smug childress will be when he is out on his ass
I agree VJ!
We have the best kickers in the league!
Our center and LG are awesome!
Our Linebackers kick butt!
Nobody runs on our DLine!
Our #3 QB might really be good some day!
Our owner is really rich!
How was that?
Bud, don’t forget - we have the best stadium in the league!
