Frerotte to start Sunday

September 17th, 2008 – 11:50 AM by Judd Zulgad

Vikings coach Brad Childress wasn’t kidding when he said he’d consider starting whatever quarterback gave his team the best chance to win.

Gus Frerotte will replace Tarvaris Jackson at quarterback in the starting lineup Sunday against Carolina.

There is obviously pressure there. Another way for him to not take responsibility for his decisions.
Any of you fools happy about this decision needs to realize that other than the QB, nothing has changed. Same sh!t, different QB, who may manage the game better, but will be handcuffed with the same game plan and play calling.
Remind me of the days of Jeff George.

harmonirane says:

But what if Chilly decides to throw the ball more with Gus…… Nah, never happen. This decision marks the beginning of the end of the Brad Childress era in MInnesota. And thankfully so. This decision means that he, Brad Chilly Childress, thinks that the offensive woes are the fault of the QB. This decision doesn’t acknowledge the fact the in-game reporters and TV commentators know what play he’s going to call at the same moment he doesn’t

Worse still, reiforces the Chilly mantra or throwing players under the bus, and then backing over them to make sure the job is complete. This decision doesn’t address the fact the Gus is more mobile sleeping than he is in the pocket. And he’s going to need that mobility since our O-Line only gets paid to run block.

But at least CHilly is feeling the heat.

I admit it, I was wrong about T-Jack…the guys just doesn’t have what it takes to play at this level on a consistant basis (that last part is key).

Bones, you were right all along.

Retsub, you were right, too…but you are still a pr!ck.

Tomb says:

I don’t know that ANY QB could really succeed under this KAO. Jackson may not be the man, but right now, he’s justa scape goat for glaring coaching inadequacies.

bensonsdaddy says:

September 17th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

It seems as though nobody understands that a coach can only call the plays that the QB is capable of executing. I’m using the word “executing” very liberally here. I think we will see a bit of a more diverse range of plays called now that there is a QB who just might be capable of running them. Don’t get me wrong, Childress still seems like an idiot. At least he now seems to be a bit more open to the fact that he really screwed up when he decided Jackson had any potential at all. This is certainly a change that needed to be made. Complaints about play-calling are usually made by folks who don’t understand football very well. This isn’t Tecmo Bowl, where if you call the correct play you automatically get a first down guys. Frerotte will at the very least open up a bit more room for Peterson as the opposing team likely won’t be laughing their $#@!$!# off in the locker room before coming onto the field

HOPPY says:

September 17th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

Chili’s offense is a no win offense unless you have a high school football team. It’s going to be the same predictable plays. Run right, run left, run up the middle. Then pass at the absolute worst times where the #1 reciever is a no hands losers. TJack is still not the problem. “Frerotte has completed 54.2 percent of his passes during his career for 19,134 yards and a 74.3 quarterback rating. He’s 37-44-1 as a starter.” We are upgrading with a perenial loser? Terrible. Way to blow it Bones.

KingKC uhda TC says:

Frerotte will likely become very familiar with Mr. Peppers….

vikingsuperfan says:

September 17th, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Benson, I think that it has to do with the coach because it is clear that Chilly does not allow their QBs to audible at the line of scrimmage. A veteran like Frerotte is capable of reading defenses, and audible out of a play if needed, but it will not happen this weekend because it is not allowed. Chilly continued to run against eight-man fronts last week, which a rookie knows better to audible to a pass, if possible.

The coaching system is screwed up and this is a sign that he is getting desperate and the front office has now added pressure to placing a winning product on the field, especially now that they are looking for a new stadium. The people of Minnesota are not going to want to pay for a new stadium for an 8-8 team.

Tomb says:

September 17th, 2008 at 12:59 pm

…and that’s why Cassel can come in and win games, right? I see what you’re saying benson, but I don’t think you are completely correct.

Bones says:

September 17th, 2008 at 1:01 pm

I agree with Simon, this probably isn’t going to make that big of a difference. What Gus has over T-Joke in accuracy, he gives up with his complete lack of mobility. And unless the play calling changes, it won’t matter anyways. That said, I hope to God we never have to see T-Joke under center for the Vikings ever again.

One has to wonder what inspired this move. If it did indeed come from Zygi, did the owner also demand that his idiot coach turns past page 1 of the playbook?

Duluth: trust me, I’m a prick as well…

KingKC uhda TC says:

September 17th, 2008 at 1:01 pm

Frerotte has experience. Tarvaris has athleticism. Chili has???

Bones says:

September 17th, 2008 at 1:03 pm

T-Joke isn’t 100% of the problem, but if you guys still believe he is an NFL-caliber quarterback you still reside in Fantasyland with Wisvike…

vikingsuperfan says:

September 17th, 2008 at 1:04 pm

By the way I forgot to say that this moves most likely killed any confidence T-Jax had, and going back to him will be a disaster. This has to be a permanent move. T-Jax only becomes the starter if Frerotte is injured.

Buster - you mean besides give a lot of people hope?

I’ve said all along this guy reminded me a lot of Akili Smith, Quincy Carter and or Aaron Brooks. But all I kept hearing is, give it time, he’s just a rookie, he’s 8-whatever as a starter.

bensonsdaddy says:

September 17th, 2008 at 1:23 pm

I am not saying that the play calling has been stellar. What I’m saying is that these coaches know these players better than anyone else does. The reason Johnson wasn’t allowed to audible is because Childress says he was trying to get everyone to just know the offense in that 1st year. Jackson hasn’t been allowed to audible because they do not think of him as capable of doing so properly. This also explains the simple minded play calling. If you have a simple minded QB, thats really all you have the option to run. Now if Frerotte is bound by the same type of incredibly predictable offense I will agree completely on the play calling. At the very least we won’t have to see that lame @@@ rollout that Jackson ran so often. Frerotte doesn’t have the mobility to run that. You get what I mean?

2Minute Tommy says:

September 17th, 2008 at 1:26 pm

Bones - I don’t think that’s the case, I think he’s actually building a shrine around it.

Bones says:

One of two things has happened, either Zygi insisted on this move or there was a mutiny in the locker room. There is just no reason why T-Joke’s biggest supporter would all of a sudden turn on him…

yukonthegreat says:

at a minimum, I hope Frerotte can get through his reads and at least put the ball DOWNFIELD into a couple peoples hands, like you said benson, he isn’t going to torch anyone

jasonave6413 says:

September 17th, 2008 at 1:29 pm

Chilly is such a dumbass: “I’m just not seeing right now the aggressiveness from Tarvaris that I saw throughout the offseason, training camp, the two preseason games that he played in,” Childress said. “And part of it may be experience. I know Gus will give us that.”

You call 8 passes in the first half, how aggressive can you be? Jackass.

They announced this today to give the grounds-crew enough time to put extra padding on the walls in the endzone. . .

kennyrogers says:

bensonsdaddy says:

September 17th, 2008 at 1:31 pm

Bones, wasn’t it you that said that Wilf is a hands-off owner when I suggested that Wilf had to have told Childress to consider this change? I could be wrong but someone said that. I think Wilf did have something to do with it. This guy is trying to sell tickets and bigger still, trying to get a stadium built. That will not happen with the current disconnect the team has with its fans on account of Jackson. I also am pretty sure that there was a definite divide in the locker room

2Minute Tommy says:

benson - 3 years later, no one knows this offense yet. Childress has complicated his version of the WCO so much that players who are familar with the WCO all have the deer in the headlights gaze. Brad Childress is an arrogant p.rick who’s trying so hard to make a name for himself, ala Walsh, Holmgren, etc, that he can’t see that he’s actually making things too difficult.

sdh13 says:

September 17th, 2008 at 1:34 pm

If Frerotte had been the QB in the Green Bay game they would have had what …about 8 sacks .. we will gain experience and accuracy but get an immobile QB in return ..and the overrated O line does not seem to pass block well

Bones says:

September 17th, 2008 at 1:38 pm

Yeah, there is little doubt that Chili envisions future NFL head coaches employing the Childress West Coast Offense.

I really thought they should take a shot at Trent Green when he was available. He’s probably over the hill, but hey, he’s gotta be better than Jackson. Sefiert says Childress said in the press conference that Jackson is still the QB of the future in MN. You think he only said that because they might need him if Frerotte gets hurt? Or do you really think he hasn’t seen enough of him to know he is in no way a QB-of-the-future? Marinate on that for a while
