In his first stint with the Vikings, Gus Frerotte served as the backup quarterback to Daunte Culpepper. In fact, it was during that time that Frerotte realized just how much he enjoyed serving in the mentor role. Frerotte was playing behind Culpepper in 2004, when the latter had his best season in the NFL.
That included 4,717 yards passing and 39 touchdowns. Today, Chip got a chance to ask Frerotte for his reaction to the news that Culpepper had decided to retire. In an e-mail he sent to several reporters, including our own Mark Craig, Culpepper said he was moving on. The thing about Culpepper’s decision is in the end it was never clear exactly what he wanted. Green Bay and Pittsburgh had offered him the chance to be a backup.
“That’s obviously up to him if he doesn’t want to be a backup anywhere,” Frerotte said. “You’re not always going to get [a chance to start] when you’ve been out of the league. It’s a business. I’ve been through every situation. It’s just a matter of his personal opinion. Anything can happen in this league. You don’t always have to be the starter.”
Frerotte is 37-years-old, still has a very good arm and obviously has the desire to continue playing football even if it means being the backup to Tarvaris Jackson. The 31-year-old Culpepper might have learned a few things from Frerotte about how to play the game but it appears Frerotte’s perseverance did not rub off.
From JS blog:
“Green Bay - Here is an update after coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media:
A.J. Hawk “looked good, like his normal self flying around at practice.” McCarthy added that Hawk felt he has been ready for “quite some time.” While McCarthy said Hawk is “ready to go,” it’s up to Pat McKenzie to clear Hawk.
On Scott Wells: “They feel they have a handle on it. He’s going to get some treatment today and it could be one day or a couple weeks. He was very encouraged with his visit. We’ll see how he feels in the morning.”
On Chad Clifton: “We’re just being cautious with Chad. We’ll probably hold him out tomorrow and he’ll practice Saturday.”
On KGB: “You can only trust what’s on the film and I thought he practiced extremely well earlier in the week. I thought he looked very explosive out there today. He was definitely getting off the ball and applying pressure like he normally does. He’s had some swelling. We’re just trying to help him with that.”
On Charles Woodson: “It’s more of a soreness thing. He’ll practice tomorrow.”
Josh Sitton is out for the game. That designation has not yet been placed on Wells or James Jones.
Here is the full Packers injury report:

Filthy lying Fockers. It’s way worse than the way they’re making it sound.
Stupid Smoot.
Who has Giants D in fantasy league, Matty or someone? That’s gonna turn out to be a better pickup than everyone thinks.

no, i have the Bears and Jags D…not going to prove anything w/ the Bears in week one as they get smoked by the colts
Tony Pants, I’m really not interested in your email address.
The Bears should have a pretty good D though Matty.
hahahahahahaha, did anyone just see the Smooter drop a sure fire Interception. Right to his hands. In his own end zone too. what a joke. This goes along with his already pass interference he got in his own endzone, leading to a G men TD. He is soley responsible for 10 NYG points. Way to go Smooter.
I wonder if Peyton and Eli are giving any of their $$$ to their pops and mom.
That Bill Gates Jerry Seinfled commercial’s pretty good.
sure wish smooter was back in purple, we could cut him right b4 the giants game so he wont get embarrased by Laxico, “other than this he is a top 2 CB usually” direct quote by Culpepper

pants
Tony Pants, go bother someone else bone-smoker!!!
hey, thanks for the thoughts on the blog from previous posts.
someone asked me how blitz happy I thought the Vikes would be against Rodgers.
My answer is extremely blitz happy. Its the first game of the season against a quarterback making his first career start. They’ll throw everything they’ve got in the Kitchen Sink right now after him to see how he handles it because teams don’t necessarily know what to expect in the first game.
Rag, I agree. Plus they’ll stack the box against the Fockers.
I disagree, I think the Vikes D will wait patiently for an un-proven QB to make the mistakes every un-proven QB makes…not that many blitzes, they will let the front four do all the pressuring at first, if that fails into the second half then we might see some blitzes
Yukon - another reason I think they’ll be blitz happy is to accelerate Rodger’s decision making process, as in force him to make quick snap decisions instead of having that extra second or two to scan the Defense.
I think thats football 101 against the unproven young QB mold that Rodgers fits.
Look what teams did last year and will continue to do this year against Jackson, and thats force him to show he knows what to do against heavy pressure.
Yukon, why not force an un-proven QB into mistakes? He can’t complete a long pass anyway to save his life. If Chili wants to wait till the 2nd half fine but this coaching staff is too conservative on both sides of the ball as far as I’m concerned.
j a y 0 8 bwaaaaaak + t o n y = best fiends
why tip your hand? let the inexperienced QB get all he can from the front four…if it isnt working and our secondary is as piss poor as last yr then blitz the hell out of him
smoot…only way he gets them, thrown right to him, even then he drops 90% of them…what a joke
Judd and Chip why haven’t you banned Tony Pants already? What does he contribute to Vikings talk? He’ll wind up on To Catch A Predator if he hasn’t already so just ban him alreadyl.
another thought on the blitzing, this is a Rivalry game thats now got some bad blood between them stemming from the offseason, they’re going to want to inflict some pain, and blitzing will help accomplish that.
That’s why he plays defense. He catches like JP.
