No call on Anderson

September 1st, 2008 – 6:23 PM by Judd Zulgad

The agent for offensive tackle Willie Anderson said this evening that the Vikings have not called about the veteran who was released by the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday.

“We haven’t been officially contacted by Minnesota, but we have been contacted by many, many teams, and I’m sure Minnesota is aware of his situation,” said Terry Bolar, who runs Prestige Sports International.

Bolar did not give a specific number of teams that have called about his client but said 12 was in the ballpark. Anderson, 33, is a 12-year veteran who had a streak of four consecutive Pro Bowl appearances ended last season when he was limited to seven games because of injury. He lost his starting job at right tackle this offseason to Stacy Andrews.

Some have wondered if the Vikings would consider adding Anderson. Ryan Cook is entering his second season as the Vikings’ starter at right tackle. Anderson’s success has come playing on the right side, so signing him to take over during left tackle Bryant McKinnie’s four-game suspension wouldn’t seem to be an option. Right now, the Vikings plan to play Artis Hicks at left tackle.

Bolar said Anderson is healthy and ready to go. “I think it will come down to the situation and we will evaluate what’s best for him,” Bolar said. “I’m sure something will take place.”

And you have Marcus Johnson playing behind Cook. Willie’s probably got better situations to go to

If the Dolphin have picked up three don’t they have to discard at some point?

I agree, there’s no pressing need for a RT right now and LT would only be for 4 weeks (and he’d be learning the plays for the first couple of weeks anyway). The only way this makes sense is to keep him away from Chicago…

The Vikes will not sign Willie. Why did the commish have to be so harsh on McKinnie anyway, they haven’t even come to a verdict in his case have they? Besides, McKins didn’t mean any harm, he was just gettin his swerve on a bit, it won’t happen again. Probably. Maybe.

Cowboys and Forty Niners have their eyes on Todd Bouman. They both collect former Viking quarterbacks.

Lost Viking says:

Ironic the one position where Vike still have a need is the one most heavily drafted. With six rookies starting at OT next week what happened to all the formers, exes and incumbents?

Bill Harrison says:

McKinnie’s loss for four games is no great loss in the pass protection department as he’s lousy against speed guys anyway but he’s very good run blocking and this loss will put more pressure on Jackson and the passing game in the toughest stretch of games the team will face all season with the Pukers in Lambeau, Indy at home, Carolina at home and TN on the road followed by NO in NO.

We don’t want Willie Anderson. He’s old, injury-prone, and would be playing out of position.

TommyK’s link is pretty good and NOT unrelated. He says, “Without a doubt, this will be an exciting team to watch but I’m a bit skeptical with some of the over enthusiastic predictions.”

I’m a bit skeptical so far also.

That’s right, “we”. I’m on the team baby!

Pulling somebody like Anderson off the scrap heap is no better than rolling with Hicks at left tackle. Either way, the quarterback will be wearing a bullseye on his back.
