Cuts continue

August 30th, 2008 – 11:08 AM by Judd Zulgad

The Vikings must have their roster set at 53 players by 5 p.m. today and we’re in place to follow it all. Hopefully we will get the official list of cuts by around 5:30 p.m.

As reported in this morning’s paper a group of players were told Friday that they were going to be released. This includes linebackers Rufus Alexander and David Herron, wide receivers Martin Nance and Nate Jones, offensive tackle Chase Johnson, center Dan Mozes, cornerback Brandon Sumrall, tight end Braden Jones and defensive end Chris Norwell.

That is nine players from the 75-man roster. Odds are the Vikings told at least 10 players, and it might have been more, on Friday they were being cut. That would mean another 12 must be released today.

The team will be able to put together its eight-man practice squad on Sunday and there is no doubt a few players who didn’t make the 53 will be signed to that unit.

It also will be interesting to see if the Vikings claim a few players off waivers or sign a veteran. For instance, the fact Alexander and Herron are both going to be let go would indicate the Vikings have their eye on another linebacker.

We also will find out officially today who the Vikings are going to keep as their No. 3 quarterback. Indications, and this is no surprise, are that it will be John David Booty.

UPDATE

RB Albert Young has been released. The coaching staff likes Young so it seems reasonable to think he could end up on the practice squad.

OG Brian Daniels has been released. He also could be a practice squad guy.
