Roster moves begin; Nance to be cut

August 29th, 2008 – 1:49 PM by Judd Zulgad

Some NFL teams have announced a few roster cuts today as they begin the process of getting down to the regular-season limit of 53 players. The Vikings probably won’t announce anything today but they have started informing some players that they are being let go.

Update: The Vikings have informed receiver Martin Nance he is going to be released. Nance had a solid training camp and could land on another team’s roster. This could mean the Vikings are going to keep five receivers.

Another player on the list is cornerback Brandon Sumrall, who was signed as a rookie free agent out of Southern Mississippi. Rosters must be down to 53 by 5 p.m. Saturday and the eight-man practice squad will be established on Sunday.

Continue to check Access Vikings for updates throughout the afternoon.

The list of players who have been informed they will be cut

C Dan Mozes

WR Martin Nance

CB Brandon Sumrall

T Chase Johnson

TE Braden Jones

DE Chris Norwell

So…they haven’t announced any moves, but Sumrall calls you, Judd, and tells you he was let go? Or were you in the parking lot and you saw him smash his windshield?

Viking John says:

Maybe he saw the pink slip?????
That Judd is quite crafty….

Cutdown Day is a tough day for everybody involved.

Brandon Sumrall has a fine training camp from all reports can hold his head high. Would like to see Brandon amd others make it onto to the practise squad.

Viking are a tough squad to crack in ‘08

Maybe Sumrall can go into broadcasting. Always enjoyed his dad… :)

The problem is, we’re just too damn deep at every position. There is enough talent on this roster to field TWO NFL teams…

Daunte’s wonderlic score…18

pureplayer says:

possibly 2 1/2 teams, hopefully one of them can make the playoffs.

krugjr says:

IF, and it’s a big if, Brennan’s an NFL success and JDB isn’t (2-3yrs), that should be the end of the BC (QB picking and grooming) genious talk!

Lost Viking says:

Expect the Vike cutdown number is 52 and maybe 51. Suspect Spielman will be doing some Cutdown Day shopping this weekend. We’ve done this in ‘07with Garrett Mills and in ‘06 with Artis Hicks and Bollinger

QB
OT
special team

Where would you add a player?

krugjr says:

I know it’s pre-season and it’s “vanilla” offense, but the play calling looked just like the last 2 yrs of reg season…..if we don’t pass to set up the run, I’ll, I’ll, I’ll…….

The vikings better be on the phone with philly right now for discussion of a major trade for Hank Baskett.

Horrible!!!

B. Grant says:

It seems like we desperately need help on the O-Line, and can always use an upgrade on special teams. But not sure anyone on the bubble of other teams can immediately help us in the OLine.

Probably too soon to give up on Booty unless Chili is really owly this weekend.

Vikings South says:

August 29th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

How did Artis look at LT (granted, against third-stringers, but…)?

I don’t suppose there are any near-starter-quality tackles on the bubble with other teams?

Thank you for your supports John! But unlike my old crazy friend Daunte, Fred has a team.

Fred just read the letter from that darn nut job Daunte… that letter and actions like it is EXACTLY why no body wants that freaks. My friend Matty summed it up best, this guy is a douches.

Daunte is scary….

B. Grant says:

I didn’t even know Zygi was being considered as McCain’s running mate, Kru. I thought Pawlenty was being considered. I gotta watch CNN a little more, I guess.

Viking John says:

August 29th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

The Smooter can play on our team anyday.

I really hope we get Nance on our practice squad, but I don’t see it happening. I don’t know how much better of a case he could have made to get on the team than he did going from being a practice all-star last year and this year, to actually producing in the pre-season. My guess is, Nance won’t be wearing purple next week.

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

August 29th, 2008 at 2:55 pm

JP… my man Bone really isn’t that bad. He is mean to old people but the “worst human beings on earth” is probably stretching it. Top 10, maybe buts certainly not the worst.

Bones says:

JamesPatterson’s Wonderlic score: 144 terrible and 1 trillion horribles. Coincidently, HOPPY had the exact same score.

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

Fred thought Nance was in. Seems like a good dude and the facts that he could catch was a plus. Fred will be talking to the Redskin to pick up Martins

B. Grant says:

August 29th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

BroBo got tossed like a clay pigeon a few times last night. He is a small person. (whoops, I mean average.)

Bones says:

August 29th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

I’m not surprised that Nance was let go. I wish it would’ve been Ferguson.

krugjr says:

August 29th, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Nance probably had 52 receptions for 625 yds in the pre-season by running to the open spot instead of where BC drew it up so he’s gone!

krugjr says:

August 29th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

BG if Pawlenty had been chosen who would’ve been the new gov…..and would that have helped the stadium push?

Bones says:

August 29th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

Lieutenant Governor Carol Molnau would’ve inherited T-Paw’s position.

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

FFS the question was “who is the person, and would they have changed MN politics” and thanks, Bones

Lost Viking says:

You want the team to bring young guys into their system and develop them. Nance was the Survivor of last year’s Todd Lowber sponsored 14 receiver boot camp. He showed fine abilities to make tough catches.

OK, so now we have to see if Jaymar Johnson or Darius Reynaud is the new in house alternative.

Unless Coach is thinking he’ll bring in cousin Bam Childress for a tryout…

krugjr says:

look at all those cuts around the league…..Brad & Rick must be droolin’

Like Zygi says, We’re on schedule and right where we need to be!
