L.A. story

August 28th, 2008 – 1:59 PM by Judd Zulgad

DALLAS — Interesting story out of Los Angeles today in which billionaire developer Ed Roski Jr.’s business partner says he has “no doubt” an NFL team will be playing in Los Angeles in 2009 and that the most likely venue to begin with would be the Rose Bowl.

Obviously, that team is not going to be the Vikings given their lease at the Metrodome runs through the 2011 season. But Majestic Realty vice president John Semcken added that he believes two NFL teams eventually could end up playing in the $800 million stadium that Roski wants to build. An NFL spokesman said the league has long identified Los Angeles as a two-team market. (A two-team scenario would likely end up with Roski owning one team and the other playing in the stadium as a tenant.)

Seven clubs have expressed interest in playing in the new stadium, but Semcken declined to name them. In April, Roski listed the Vikings as one of seven teams that might move to L.A. and his new stadium. The Saints, Bills, Jaguars, Chargers, Raiders and 49ers were the others.

The Vikings, of course, want a new stadium (and some public assistance getting it done) on the site where the Metrodome now stands. Team officials have said the upcoming Legislative session will be key. Owner Zygi Wilf, however, has never threatened to move the franchise.

Asked about the subject of moving or selling the team in July, Wilf said: ”I’m not considering moving [the team], I’m not considering selling it, so I think that question at this time is …”  He then paused before saying,  ”I don’t have anything to respond to that.”

Are we not going to get a decision on McKinnie from NFL prior to cutdown day.

Seems strange?

And PacMan get his call from the Commish while he’s hanging out at Hooters. Wonderful.

Does this mean he can suit up for tonight’s game for first time? Has been allowed to be active for any Exhibition games?

Yeah, I wonder why RG is waiting so long on his decision.

Even though LA is a large market, they have trouble drawing fans to the games. Transportation to and from the games are terrible. Just ask the Rams and Raiders. LA has failed twice, why do they think the 3rd time will be a charm?

I think the Vikings should move. To Blaine!

2Minute Tommy says:

August 28th, 2008 at 2:23 pm

I think Blaine is a great idea…Growing community, lots of acreage. A great spot would be off of 35W by that Shooting Club. I wonder why they never explored that idea?

The teams most likely to move would be Buffalo, Jacksonville, St Louis, or maybe New Orleans. Buffalo is playing a game or 2 in Toronto. Their owner doesn’t make enough money in Buffalo. Three teams in Florida is one too many. St Loius owners want to sell and New Orleans stuck around just long enough to help the city bounce back a little. The Vikings are no going anywhere……except the SUPERBOWL !!!!

Viking John says:

August 28th, 2008 at 2:25 pm

They should move to Fargo, closer to go to the games then.

Moorhead is completely horrible. The Bison beat them 80-0 one year, pretty funny.

Bones - you are right, IR and JL were fun to watch. I hope the city rebuilds the DECC so they can play on a full size sheet.

Bones you are horrible!

Lost Viking says:

August 28th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

The issue w/ McKinnie may be his innocent plea. If the NFL comes down with the four game suspension it couldn’t be based on a conclusive detemination of guilt. They could suspend on the basis of three incidents demonstrating conduct unbecoming ie. you’ve embarrassed us enough. If McKinnie settles with the plaintiff out-of-court such a League punishment might be expected to follow

Rendering a 4 game punishment would be seen as substituting an NFL verdict for the legal verdict. McKinnie’s lawyers could be at a disadvantage pleading his innocence after the NFL announced its punishment. A League decision might bring the NFLPA into the picture.

This is the only reason I can think of for Goodell waiting for the season to start before handing out the forthcoming suspension.

2MT - Yeah, I was afraid of that (DNC interrupting it). Hopefully not…it’s not like people can’t turn to 8 different channels and watch the same POS. The Vikes game, even preseason, would beat it out for ratings, easy, especially with all the other channels to watch it on…

Ch 45 isn’t part of the package down here in SE Minne, so it’s gonna suck if it’s only broadcast in the Twin Cities…crap. :-P
