Childress: Starters won’t play

August 26th, 2008 – 3:59 PM by Chip Scoggins

Vikings coach Brad Childress said none of his starters will play Thursday at Dallas. He said he wants to rest them and be able to get a longer look at backups who are fighting to make the 53-man roster.

Childress said there are still a few roster spots open entering the final game and the staff wants to evaluate some of those backups a little more.

Backup quarterback Gus Frerotte also will not play. Frerotte wasn’t at practice today and Childress said he gave him the day off.

Brooks Bollinger and rookie John David Booty will each get a half. Childress said he hasn’t decided who will start, joking that he might flip a coin or play rock, paper, scissors.

Former Gophers coach Murray Warmath visited practice. Warmath is 95 but still sharp. Childress said when someone asked about his Gophers hat, Warmath took it off, looked at it and said, “Yep. Those are the last people that paid me.”

Sweet! That’s got to give us at least a 40% chance of our starters not getting hurt in Dallas…

Is the #3 QB position still a question? Goodness I hope not. I assume BroBo has been told, “Here’s your chance to show your stuff on TV for someone to possibly pick you up.” Booty hasn’t looked great in PS, but has much more “upside” at this stage of the game.

Can the Vikes average more scoring than last year? There may not be a great leap here, but here are a few reasons why they should increase scoring:
- No TWill to drop wide open TD passes.
- Shank will hopefully concentrate a little more in the zone.
- a better overall receiving corps.
- An “improved” TJack with hopefully fewer interceptions and more TD throws.
- A better pass rush should lead to shorter opponent drives and more offensive possessions.
- A more experienced AP.

Concerns to affect scoring down:
- Pass protection
- Penalties
- Tapeh vs. Richardson
- Defensive focus on our run game
- Berrian toe/TJack knee/AP knee

I still say we can average 23/24.

Tomb says:

I’d like to see more bootlegs out of this offense.

Big fan of the bootleg, especially if T Jack is healthy and speedy.

Well, I hope no one gets on here and rips Childress for sitting the starters when so may called for an end to pre-season period. The above roster looks pretty good, but I am still not a fan of Vischancoe, or how ever the hell you spell his name. I like Tapeh as FB he has that X factor, that desire and humility. I don’t see the Vikings going the whole season with out trying very hard to find help at DE.

I have no problem with the DE’s we have now if they can stay healthy. So as long as none of them go down this season, and Udeze can/wants to play next season, we’re pretty solid at DE for years to come.

With our very limited cap space I’d rather see our Front Office make a move on some O-Line depth/upgrades.

gr8scot says:

August 26th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Regarding the roster above: I don’t see the Vikes with 6 WR, but if they do carry 6 it would be Fergie instead of Johnson. Although they might leave Fergie off in week one so his salary isn’t guaranteed. I also think it’s Evans instead of Guion. I think Dugan makes the team instead of the 6th WR. The other three that could depend on the last game are the final LB (Leman, Alexander or Herron), the final O-line between C. Johnson and Radovich, and the final CB between Sapp and Sumrall. Radovich looked better than Johnson with very limited time. Sumrall looked like the third Cromartie. If he makes some plays like he did against the Ravens, it’ll be real hard to get him to the Practice Squad.

JamesPatterson says:

August 26th, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Hoppy: You are horrible, there I said it.

akvikesfan says:

August 26th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

gr8,

Good assessment. If you notice I left 1 open spot because I was undecided if the Vikes would keep Dugan, Radovich, or Sumrall. Also, with Medeau’s situation, it’s possible that we can keep one extra player until at least week 6. I do see the Vikes keeping 6 WRs… and its a personal hunch of mine that Fergie will not be one of them. Berrian and Wade are enough veteran experience for one WR crew. I don’t think quite as highly of Sumrall as you do, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he sticks. I wish the Vikes would find out if Sullivan could be tought to be a great long snapper. While I like Loeffler, another roster spot would be nice.

akvikesfan, You’re wrong on a few. C Johnson gets cut replaced by Radovich. Leman replaced by Alexander. They also keep Mattran, Daniels, Reynaud, Dugan, and Tahi.

gr8scot says:

August 26th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

Fergie can block which is a plus. Berrian and Rice seem to have a problem staying on the field. J. Johnson seems to be a high potential returner, but doesn’t seem to be able to catch. Sumrall made very athletic plays but it was against 3rd stringers. Like to see what he can do against better competition. The one-handed int against the Ravens was highlight reel stuff. And no I didn’t notice that you’d left one spot open. The lack of 53 fingers, toes, or any combination thereof is a hinderance.

[…] Brad Childress has decreed that no starters shall see action in tomorrow night’s preseason finale against the Dallas Cowboys, a move no doubt connected to the fast turn-around from Saturday’s game.  Gus Frerotte will also be kept out of action, meaning the game will indeed be a showdown between John David Booty and Brooks Bollinger with the third and final QB slot at stake.  The Vikings should try something novel here and throw the thing open to a fan vote.  Maybe Booty and Bollinger could show off some other skills too, like Karaoke and tap-dancing.  Anything to spruce up what is sure to be a bloody dreadful game.
