Jackson: sprained MCL

August 17th, 2008 – 1:30 PM by Chip Scoggins

As we speculated in the previous post, Tarvaris Jackson has been diagnosed with a sprained right knee. It appears to be a MCL sprain. Profootballtalk.com also reported the sprained knee.

This almost assuredly will keep Jackson out of Saturday’s third preseason game, which is the most important one because it is the dress rehearsal for the regular season.

It will be interesting to see how much work Jackson will get in the final preseason game at Dallas. Starters typically play very little in that game.

Might as well bench him till sept 8

he could start studying the game plan for that game and recovering and practicing and all

Dagnabit. When does he officially qualify as injury-prone? Or “intactness-challenged”?

How long does it take to recover from one of these, on average?

I’m gonna start yelling “Slide, T-Jack!” whenever he moves with the ball.

Ed Sharockman says:

The report also said Jackson was already riding a stationary bike. It all depends on the degree of the sprain, as to how long or IF he’ll be out. Don’t be surprised if he’s practicing this week - and if he does, he’ll probably play some next week… but I’ll bet he doesn’t run.

After waking from a glorious Sunday afternoon nap, I got to pondering. Wasawa Serwanga did only play 2 years with the Vikes. Perhaps Buster was better than I thought, but then I was reminded last night that there is NFL teams in California were Wasawa finished off his career and Buster played for the CFL. ha ha.

I used to watch the CFL when the games were televised on ESPN. Good football. Too bad none of the stations I get carry it. The CFL is also where Sandy Stephens went to eat himself out of football, except for a brief stint with the Chiefs as FB.

Bill Harrison says:

August 17th, 2008 at 4:36 pm

If the injury’s a grade 1 or mild grade 2 sprain it shouldn’t affect him all that much for the opener but if it’s the latter the knee’s going to require some extensive rehab and will be a concern all season. Adrian had a grad two plus MCL sprain last year.

No way he should play this coming Saturday. He’s looked plenty sharp already and whatever work he still needs with Berrian can be done in practice.

Bill Harrison says:

August 17th, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Correction. AP’s injury last season was a less common LCL grade two plus injury.

TJ cannot be relyed on to be there week after week so is that injury prone…yes. As soon as everyone starts praising him for his “greatness” the guy goes down with an injury…then we’ll have to wait next year because he can only play so many games and the homers will let his rookie year slide to next year too. Then it’ll be “the guys record was 3 wins one loss” blah blah blah quit saying the guy was 8 and 4 as a starter because there is 16 games a season and the way this guy is going he might get only 10 games this year, 3 years to get one season under his belt, yeah maybe the guy did look better this preseason but if he is injured all the time then what good is he on the bench nursing another injury.

highonfire says:

I never said it, but there are some who’ll say it, all I’ve ever said is he’s better than last year so far…and he was ranked what…45th or something…lol

highonfire says:

August 17th, 2008 at 5:40 pm

all he has to do is not lose the game and stay healthy, but he cannot stay healthy and he really tries to push the not losing the game part…so…Gus you ready for the reins?

matty927 says:

August 17th, 2008 at 5:44 pm

that would be the worst case scenario

Monctonvike says:

August 17th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

I mean no one wants there starter missing during the year

But based on facts Gus has stepped in and won for the vikes heck he stepped in last year for the rams who’s o line was swiss cheese and won some games don’t discount the value of picking him up

There is a reason he is not a starter but really if its supposed to be ok to get excited about t-runs preseason numbers then why not GUs’s he has done well against the starters. We will likely be getting a good look at them in the steelers game. Garcia stepped in and took the eagles to the playoffs todd collins did it last year for the redskins. Its far too early to say but no reason why Gus couldn’t do it. If he were our number QB in my estimation he would be the second best QB in the division falling just under kitna.

matty927 says:

August 17th, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Monctonvike says:

I would not be suprised if AP hits the wall a little bit this year. Very commoon for second year guys not too mention its gonna depend on T-run hit the every QB’s dream the one on one wr or heck even the wide open uncovered wr if he can do that we will be ok

Run D= expect it to take a dip now that we have allen the are playing the LB’s back more

D startegy against the pukers on the 8th= lots of shifting the D some of the smoke and mirror’s stuff we did with our LB’s and of course bring the heat make rodgers throw kick and take those running lanes away from the 30 million dollar Grant and if our O doesn’t turn the ball over all night we will be ok

TJ didn’t look all that great last night anyway, when he was hitting it was like “yeah that works” but when he missed it was way off and that was like “what the f&*k was that” So he didnt exactly throw anything that was that extraordinary, anyone can throw a five yard pass, lets see him throw a ball past 5 yards once…his TD to nance was close to being overthrown as well so that doesn’t count…lol

Every year they add new rules to protect QB’s I don’t think they will stop until they add the redshirt to the season. Preseaon isn’t time ti get cute and run around like that he is supposed to be working on his pocket pressance if he is gonna bootleg every play then he is far more open to more of that

I can recall this being the second injury that TJack has experienced. Am I wrong? We’re making it sound like it’s his tenth. Nothing too out-of-the-ordinary about a concussion when you ram a linebacker head on. And last night’s injury was a nasty twist of a knee, happens a lot.

All I am saying is, these two injuries don’t quite make him a twig just yet. No doubt, he needs to learn to slide and play for another play, but I have also seen him take a lot of hits on runs and sacks, and I don’t see him being brittle from all this. Let’s not go out and sign Ego-pepper just yet.

(Just maintaining the realist view on TJ.)

gr8scot says:

August 17th, 2008 at 10:39 pm

Wow 4 whole games with injuries - three different injuries no less. I’m guessing that amongst the NFL starters there’s only Favre, P. Manning, and Romo that haven’t missed a game due to injury and P. Manning’s could come at the season opener. TJ’s looked good so far - better than last year and better than the run D. Could be because Allen does a lot of speed rush to the outside and runners cut up in the gap.

Lost Viking says:

August 17th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

All the post-game discussion is on T_Jax injury. Admittedly didn’t see the game but there appears to be more to celebrate than relief that injury appears minor.

Defensive Line showed signficant sack totals for the first time in many games. Grigsby seems to be a keeper at a thin position for this team. There’s some work to do between the D Line and linebackers but this may be housekeeping stuff.

Similarly, Martin Nance was one of the winners of that crazy 14 receiver Survivor series at last year’s camp.

Finally, Vike had plenty of chances to hitch the wagon to one Kyle Boller, QB over the past couple of years. Fortunately, we’ve avoided that scenario and he’s someone else’s problem.

So far, I’m liking what I’m not seeing
