Vikings sign three

August 11th, 2008 – 10:11 AM by Judd Zulgad

MANKATO — As expected the Vikings made some roster moves today to replace the injured Heath Farwell and Jayme Mitchell.

Chris Norwell, a rookie defensive end from Illinois, was signed to help add depth on the line after Mitchell suffered a torn ACL on Friday against Seattle. The Vikings also are without end Brian Robison, who is out indefinitely after having surgery to fix a varicose vein in his leg.

The team also signed two offensive tackles: Sean Dumford, a rookie out of Eastern Kentucky, and Brock Pasteur, a rookie from Stephen F. Austin. Space on the 80-man roster was created by placing Farwell (torn ACL), Mitchell and first-year guard Mike Jones on injured reserve.

It’s worth noting that safety Madieu Williams is sitting out the morning practice after doing limited work on Sunday. Williams missed Friday’s game because of neck spams. Also sitting out are safety Tyrell Johnson (unknown); offensive tackle Drew Radovich (shoulder); defensive tackle Kenderick Allen (hand/wrist); and offensive tackle Marcus Johnson (knee).

Among those watching practice today are former Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons coach Flip Saunders. We’ve also been told Sid is on the way but haven’t seen him yet.

By the way, I know some of you keep track of numbers. Dumford will wear No. 61; Norwell will wear No. 66; and Pasteur will wear No. 73. Defensive end Otis Grigsby also wears No. 73.

All you can do is move on and give someone out there a chance. You never know…

Someone send out a search party for Sid! I think he got lost again.

The Homers just became HUGE Norwell, Dumford, and Pasteur fans.

Bud, don’t you hate the way we play with the Tampa 2 defense? It’s all don’t get beat deep, give up short passes, don’t be aggressive.

jay08 says:

August 11th, 2008 at 10:21 am

Pasteur could be huge for us. I heard he’s really smart. He’s actually the great-grandson of Louis Pasteur.

Bones says:

August 11th, 2008 at 10:22 am

I heard Dumford would’ve been a first-rounder if he had come out after his junior season.

jay08 says:

August 11th, 2008 at 10:24 am

And Chris Norwell was projected to be a top 10 pick until he was caught in that dwarf-tossing scandal.

jay08 says:

August 11th, 2008 at 10:27 am

He set the world record though, he tossed one dwarf 17′ 8″.

jay08 says:

August 11th, 2008 at 10:29 am

But it wasn’t official because he was using a harness with a handle on it when he tossed the dwarf.

I hate the way it looks right now, yes. It requires a solid pass rush from the front four. Too early to tell if we have improved there, but the Tampa 2 won’t work until that front four gets it going. For those who remember the Vikes of the 70’s, that was a defense very similar to a Tampa 2, and the Purple People Eaters made it work.

The first couple of preseason games are so full of side purposes and various philosophies that it is hard to take much from any of it. The coaches are getting things on film and looking at players’ individual play and skills. No sense having real big arguments over what happened Friday night.

Actually, I liked Chili’s approach on offense. Made sense for a lot of reasons, but does not by any means tell the average fan too much. I think it is fair to say that TJ did show some signs of improvement, and maybe gained a little confidence. Nothing more, nothing less.

I think our pass defense is gonna be better this year with Jared but I still don’t think it’s gonna that good. I still don’t see us stopping the short slant routes partly because of our DBs and partly because it’s such a passive scheme.

kennyrogers says:

August 11th, 2008 at 10:35 am

Brock Pasteur?

Now our Vanilla schemes can be Pasteurized.

Bones says:

August 11th, 2008 at 10:36 am

Our DBs are nothing special.

jay08 says:

August 11th, 2008 at 10:36 am

And yeah Chili’s approach on offense was better but is he gonna do it when it counts? For god’s sake, just pass when you see 8-9 man fronts and run when they pull back.

jay08 says:

August 11th, 2008 at 10:41 am

Sharper hates the Tampa 2, it stifles what he’s best at. They’re not gonna let Benny be aggressive either and he could be better than Toine or Griffin. Possibly.

Give ‘em time is what I keep hearing about other parts of the team…. so why not do the same with the others…Give ‘Em Time!

How many CB’s in the league do well in their first 3 season’s? Cedric will be fine, McCauley will be fine, Tyrell Johnson is a future Pro Bowler and this years Rookie Defensive Player of the Year. Give ‘Em Time…

We got yer back T-Jack!

Bones says:

August 11th, 2008 at 10:47 am

Sounds like Sapp is too aggressive. For every pick he gets by jumping the route he gives up a big play because of it…

jay08 says:

August 11th, 2008 at 10:50 am

Right, because there’s such a history of 1st year QBs tearing it up, all QBs understand the pro game right out of college, whereas DBs never play well until they’re at least 2 years older than Toine.

jay08 says:

August 11th, 2008 at 10:52 am

Bones, but wouldn’t you at least like to see him compete with Toine for starting CB?

jay08 says:

August 11th, 2008 at 10:58 am

It’s still gonna be Toine and Griffin, they’re still gonna be picked on and they’re still gonna give up billions of short passes.

I hope your defense is better than the purple’s was on Friday. They were in that prevent again I think.

B. Grant says:

August 11th, 2008 at 11:28 am

I believe the success of the 2008 Vikings is heavily tied to the success of their pass rush. When you rush the passer with your front four, so many other weaknesses are disguised. With apologies to Ed, the Vikes D of lore did not exactly have “shut down” corners.

Backward steps have taken place with the loss of Kinechi, the injury plagued career of EJames, the demise of the afore-mentioned Mr. Scott, and now the injuries to Robison and Mitchell. And we are not even sure that Edwards is not going to have lingering back problems. The addition of Allen was huge, but this still has to be our #1 concern, IMHO. As Chili says, we are now again looking for the same things many other teams are looking for.
