Randle: Ring of Honor inductee

August 5th, 2008 – 3:16 PM by Chip Scoggins

The Vikings just announced that former defensive tackle John Randle will become the 17th member of the Ring of Honor during the Sunday Night game against the Chicago Bears on Nov. 30.

Randle found out about the honor about an hour ago after being invited by the team to attend practice.

“It’s unbelievable,” Randle said. “When they told me I was speechless. This new organization has done some wonderful things for this team and to induct me into this ring of honor is unbelievable.”

Randle led or tied for the team lead in sacks in nine of his 11 seasons with the Vikings. His 114.0 career sacks ranks third in Vikings history and the most by a defensive tackle. He earned starting spots in six consecutive Pro Bowls from 1993-98.

Here is Randle’s interview with reporters during practice:

“Who would have thought it? A guy coming here as a rookie free agent, not knowing too much about the Vikings and their history. I find myself in 2008 and in the Ring of Honor. I’m just shocked.”

(How he found out) “They told me today. My wife didn’t even tell me. She said we’re going down to watch practice. I played a little golf this morning and I came over here and I was shocked.”

(His thoughts on the current defensive line) It makes me wish I was 20 years younger. It’s a group that’s going to do some excellent things. A group of guys that are going to show people what the Vikings are all about and reminisce about the days of the Purple People Eaters.

(On Favre saga) It’s Brett Favre. He’s kind of that way on the field. He’s a guy you didn’t think was going to throw the ball. You didn’t think he was going to run. He would throw it where you didn’t think he was going to. It’s a natural form of Brett Favre. We’re all wondering what he’s going to do. We just don’t know until he comes out with an answer.

(What was it like as an undrafted free agent coming into first training camp) I felt so lost. I came here with 40 bucks in my pocket. Not knowing where I was going. Just information that I was heading to a place called Edan Prairie. I flew in at 9 p.m. and didn’t know anything or anybody. I was fortunate enough to meet some fans who showed me around a little bit. That really helped me out.

(What was his confidence level) “It was low when I first got here. I just wasn’t sure. Coming from a small Division II school to a NFL organization the caliber of the Minnesota Vikings. I didn’t think I was capable of making this team. As I stayed around every week my confidence started improving. It showed me that maybe I do have a chance of making it. Once I went through the preseason games and found out I was still on the roster I knew I had a home. I knew this is where I belong.”

(Think he would make it to this level?) “Never. I just went out and when I played the game I tried to give it my all. All my emotions. Tried my hardest. Just left it on the field every time I played.

(Much interaction with the new owners?) Yes I have. I think they’re doing such an excellent job for the Vikings organization. I think that’s a big part of a franchise. If you want to head in the right direction it starts with the ownership. I think this ownership is doing some exciting things.”

BF has to stay in GB camp, let the circus atmosphere grow, divide the camp….then on the last day before final roster, get traded to us…..TJ gets off to a 1 & 3 start, then BF takes over and we win it all….Booty learns under BF and takes over when BF is done…TJ coaches high school football and teaches English….
BF has to let the league know he won’t play for anyone else so the Pack can’t trade him.

I suspect Kenny is right on the streak.

Bert is still near the top of his game. This isn’t Vinny Testaverde we’re talking about; this is a guy who was a Pro Bowler last year.

Jason: T-Jack had a nice record as a starter last year, but that speaks to the quality of our defense and running game. I am optimistic that T-Jack will develop, but it’s more accurate to say we won last year despite him than because of him.

BF’s best quote to GB’s management: “If you won’t let me play for you, then let me play against you!” That statement should go down in history….and that’s why BF should play this one out all the way to final cut…he holds all the right cards right now!

kennyrogers says:

Yep. Peterson was an animal until teams quit worrying about or just plain ignored our passing game and stacked the box or whatever they did. It worked, and we didn’t adjust.

Gotta love the 1970’s

skinney
real deal or truth ex “let me give you the slinney on the deal”

‘ Can You Dig It’
Do you understand? ” Can you dig it man?”

‘ Psyche’!!!
To trick someone. To b.s. someone. As if to psyche them out.

‘Bogue’
Used to describe something offensive or an unrealistic idea. “That’s so Bogue” or “That’s Bogue” or “Bogue, man…”

‘Bootin’
as in; Are you going Bootin? “I’m going Roller Bootin” or rollerskating

The ‘Crib’ and going to the ‘Gig’
The “crib” was going home or to someone else’s house, and “gig” was work or job.

‘Don’t Be Such A ’spaz’
A ’spaz’ was someone that was accident prone, clutsy, or just acting stupid.

‘Dream On’
a term used to get someone down to earth, or tell them they are being unrealistic about something, e.g. when someone would say, “I’m getting a brand new car!” you’d respond, “Yeah, right; dream on man!”

‘Far Out’
cool

‘Good night, John-boy.’
An annoying phrase popularized by the entire cast of “the Waltons” — except by John-boy” (Richard Thomas) himself.

‘In Your Face!’ (or simply, ‘Face!’)
I have succeeded in embarrassing or up-staging you (usually as through an exceptional play in basketball).

‘Lay A Gasser’
to fart.

‘May The Force Be With You’
The most popular line from one of the greatest movies of the 70s(and of all time) StarWars.

‘Phony’
To describe an overbearing, “two faced”, or deceitful person or thing. Also: “Phony Baloney” which then became: “Baloney” which is an active form, used to instantly dismiss the phony person or utterance.

‘That’s Sick!’
A Midwestern phrase in the late 70’s. To describe something odd or unusual. Not necessarily an person or object of distaste, but something suspect but also intriguing. “Sick!”

‘The Man’
the man to me means any authority, corporations, police, government, they’re all the man tho first used in the 60’s by the hippies it live through the 70’s,80’s,90’s and still to this day

‘To The Max’!
Take it to the maximum. The best it can be.

‘You Know’
This was said at the end of nearly every sentence :)

‘You’re So Stunned’
Meaning the person acted or said something stupid, dumb

krugjr says:

August 5th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

humor me with this one if it’s been hashed out already this week…
If BF comes to us..1) how are we sitting with cap space 2) how many “starters” would we have to cut (final roster) and how many veterans would have to restructure their contracts to make it work?

VikingJ says:

August 5th, 2008 at 4:13 pm

Torgo = Dorkko

krugjr - just my view, but trading for BF will not create 2008 cap issues. The only way we would do this was if BF agreed to restructure and get us relief so we do not need to cut a starter.

krugjr says:

August 5th, 2008 at 4:23 pm

VJ - yeh, I’m sure he would restructure…he wants to win a championship and I think he knows we give him the best chance to get one more ring….then the big money would come his way for life!

reports: he’s considering Tampa Bay….maybe a double trade is still possible…allowing GB uppers to save face (somewhat)

I really try not to wish ill on other people, but I can’t help but smile at the thought of Packer People trying to figure out what to do about the retirement of BFs jersey on 9/8, and all of the tickets that were printed with his mug on them. Suck it, Green Bay!

Also, I read on a Packer blog that the fans were cheering every Rodgers’ incompletion.

The wheels of cheese are coming off the train, and ba da da da daaa - I’m lovin’ it!

On the 1st play of Gm. 1 Jared is under orders to take a really wide edge rush, lose his balance, accidentally run over Ted Thompson, in the process of trying to recover his balance accidentally run over Mike McCarthy, lose his balance again and accidentally run over everyone else in the Packers front office, then just as he’s about to recover his balance accidentally trample on Ted Thompson a second time.
