Favre in Purple? Take a look

July 21st, 2008 – 5:48 PM by Judd Zulgad

The Packers aren’t about to let Brett Favre join the Vikings but St. Cloud-based web developer Cory Hollenhorst decided to have some fun and put together his own version of a Sports Illustrated cover that features Favre in a Vikings jersey and reads “Going out on his own terms.” There also is a made up pull quote from Favre that reads “In Minnesota, I finally feel like I’m home.” Here’s the story, along with the picture, but I warn you if you’re a Vikings fan this might be more than you can stomach. Even if it is make believe.

On another note, there are plenty of questions about how good or bad the Chicago Bears might be this season, but the Vikings’ NFC North rivals are taking steps to keep their star players happy. That was made clear again today when middle linebacker Brian Urlacher agreed to what ESPN.com is calling a revised contract.

Urlacher had four years and about $25.5 million left on his contract but wasn’t happy about it. The new contract will run until 2012 and includes $18 million in new money.

Wahington gave up a Third Rounder for former Pro Bowler Jason Taylor when Erasmuss didn’t look dominating. That’s about all former Pro Bowler Brett is worth also, but it would be tempting.
That Sports Illustrated cover is VERY good and worth spreading around! I’ll help:

Wow, it’s like looking in a mirror. *My* cheesehead boss did not approve of the same trick on the website of a Vikings license we manage, but it did get a laugh (URL withheld to protect the client relationship).

I disapprove of this post, Judd. But there is no denying that purple is a better color than puke and urine.

Looks like an LSU jersey more than a Viking jersey. The dumbass should at least get the jersey right…

champs says:

July 21st, 2008 at 6:51 pm

I’ll just say from experience that it’s much easier to ’shop the green jersey into purple than recreate the whole thing.

Favre’s photo replaced Tarvaris Jackson, by the way.

akvikesfan says:

July 21st, 2008 at 7:04 pm

champs, you’re responsible for this?

You’re right, much easier to change the color than try to patch Favre’s head onto JDB’s uniform :) While the color is off a tinge, it’s pretty good photoshop work.

I must say though… I think Favre would look good in teal (dolphins). While I regret the way things ended with Trent Green, I wouldn’t mind seeing Favre take that pounding.

akvikesfan says:

July 21st, 2008 at 7:08 pm

I’d like to see at least one of our rookies get signed today… I was really looking forward to that.

vikings1111 says:

July 21st, 2008 at 7:12 pm

The guy did a great job on this… stop ripping him for the color being off a bit. I think it looks great and the Vikings should be looking at this licking their lips… but, unfortunately, it will never happen.

akvikesfan says:

July 21st, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Not ripping on him… just observing.

And Shockerman talks like that to everyone.

I think the vikes need to avoid temptation on this one. So far the Madden curse has wreaked havoc on the guy, and he hasn’t even taken a snap. His legacy is tarnished as a traitor.

kennyrogers says:

July 21st, 2008 at 7:24 pm

I think Ed meant the whole jersey is wrong. Vikes have those wavy stripes on the sides like Roller Derby uniforms.

Well, someone has to ask it…

Chip: Are you a Viking fan?

Don’t use any “Chili” explanation here, just yes or no.

Brett goes from Green “BAY” to “TAMPER” “BAY”.

Yep, you read that right.

akvikesfan says:

July 21st, 2008 at 7:32 pm

I think with Smith, Boller, and Flacco on the roster it wont be Baltimore.

The Bears might be interested but would have a hard time getting him from the Pack.

The Carolina talk was stoopid and will not happen.

You never know what Gruden might try down there in Tampa (I like this idea, cause then maybe Garcia would come available).

Washington is out after spending what cap space it had on Jason Taylor yesterday.

Strangly, I could see either the 49ers or Cards wanting to make their young under acheivers sit behind Favre for a year or two.

The Vikes will never get him now, even if they, for some odd reason, wanted him.

FAVRE IS DONE?
Posted by Mike Florio on July 21, 2008, 8:30 p.m.
We’ve gone 14 straight stories without mentioning Brett Favre, but due to an unconfirmed tip we received today we’ve got to break the string.

We reiterate that this is an unconfirmed tip. Then again, unconfirmed tips have been working out pretty well for us of late, so we’re more inclined than usual to press our luck.

Per the tipster, Favre is abandoning his attempt to return to the NFL. We’re told the Packers presented him with a list of three teams to which they’d attempt to trade him, and that Favre refused each one.

If this is accurate, Favre will be the first high-profile pro athlete who damaged his legacy by not playing for a new team late in his career. Last week’s shameful attempt to win the P.R. battle and to pressure the Packers into letting Brett have his way blew up in Favre’s face, with his surname suddenly less likely to conjure images of championships than to induce nausea.

But even if it’s accurate, look for this thing to continue to bubble up from time to time. We had to endure six years of stories regarding whether he’ll retire; we very well could be destined to have six years of stories regarding whether he’ll unretire.

And if Aaron Rodgers tears, rips, or pops a critical part of his anatomy, it’ll be interesting to see whether the Packers would give him a call — and whether, if they do, Favre will pick up the phone. The events of the last 10 days might have made a zero-year reunion impossible.

Meanwhile, Favre’s apparent decision not to try to return doesn’t change in any way the tampering charge the Packers filed last week against the Vikings. So even though the story of Brett’s potential return could be dead, he did just enough to give us something that we can continue to cover for the next several months.

Whether we want to or not.

champs says:

July 21st, 2008 at 7:35 pm

I had nothing to do with this one, but all I am privy to say is that there is a way to unlock the purple Favre on a certain Vikings licensee’s website.

For my part, it was much tougher to do a one-for-one job because I needed an action shot to pull off the switch. We’ll be waiting until preseason or later, assuming we *ever* see JDB do more than hold a clipboard, much less run down late-season garbage time with a relentless onslaught of handoffs.

daunte11 says:

According to NFL.com We have the best backups in the league! Not much, but we are the team best suitable to take an injury.
Top 5:
1. Vikings
2. Buccaneers
3. Steelers
4. Redskins
5. Eagles

kennyrogers says:

July 21st, 2008 at 7:44 pm

I heard that opinion on ESPN also. Gus won six games once as a backup. BUT HE’S 54 YEARS OLD ! ! !

akvikesfan says:

July 21st, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Best backup whats? Not O-line… if Hutch were to go down and McKinnie injured then next thing you know TJ, Gus, AD, and CT would all be injured too from the terrible blocking.

akvikesfan says:

July 21st, 2008 at 7:52 pm

I’d say we for sure have the best backup HB’s, safeties, LB’s, and that’s it.

Take A Risk says:

Are there any rankings on the worst, stupidest and most traitorous offensive coordinators in the league?

MiamiViking says:

Bud-

Judd is guilty by association with Seifert of not being a Vikings fan. Judd should have sold out Seifert.

Scoggins is guilty by association with Judd of not being a Vikings fan.

I feel betrayed. May Seifert be cursed to a lifetime of rolling zeros while playing Dungeons and Dragons!

B. Grant says:

July 21st, 2008 at 9:29 pm

Yes. Kenny you had the correct movie line, but it WAS very easy.

Congratulations to ak for posting about YKW without using YKW’s actual name. Still, the post does not help us leave the FFF behind.

TAR answers yes to the Vike fan question. Good.

And thanks to Miami for the guilty by association information. Meanwhile, “no comment” seems to be the position of our alleged non-fans, Chip and Judd. What are you hiding gentlemen?

B. Grant says:

July 21st, 2008 at 9:34 pm

Correction: I missed one in there on your post ak. So close, but that is a violation of the YKW rule during the FFF period. Sorry.

jay08 says:

July 21st, 2008 at 9:44 pm

Bud,maybe Judd and Skip are afraid of being tagged as unobjective Homers like Sid. I’d be happy if they just gave me more VikngsINFORMATION and ANALYSIS. I hate human interest stories on players, I want to hear about who’s where on the depth charts and what we should expect from our cornerbacks this year etc.

jay08 says:

July 21st, 2008 at 9:45 pm

I mean Chip instead of Skip. What does he do anyway?

MiamiViking says:

July 21st, 2008 at 9:49 pm

“No comment” usually is the same as “I’m guilty.” The majority of the time, when people avoid a question, it’s because they’re guilty (not always).

It’s like the 5th Amendment. You always see in TV shows people saying they ‘take the fifth’ to avoid testifying. But the 5th Amendment reads, in part:

“nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness AGAINST himself”

So pleading the 5th means you’re avoiding being a witness against yourself, which means you’re actually guilty (otherwise your testimony wouldn’t be against yourself).

And of course, none of this bodes well for the Vikings and those tampering charges. I’d feel much better if the Vikings had come out with an adamant denial. Chilli’s coy ‘it’s a soap opera, no contact because that would be tampering’ was a little too slick for my likes.

B. Grant says:

July 21st, 2008 at 9:51 pm

So they have to plead the 5th so as not to incriminate themselves and compromise their positions. Interesting theory, jay. I would like to see them “clear the air” though, “come out of the closet” so to speak. But if we must play this “don’t ask, don’t tell” scenrio, I guess it must be.

Sorry that’s all the cliches I have for now.

jay08 says:

July 21st, 2008 at 9:57 pm

Yup, it’s a totally reasonable question and they should answer even if it’s about some Strib policy. I like the Daily Norseman blog, that guy’s got a lot of information and he’s pretty funny.

B. Grant says:

July 21st, 2008 at 9:59 pm

From this information I think we can leak the story that our sources close to the situation suggest that Chip and Judd are, it appears, NOT Viking Fans. The alleged non-fans have not responded to multiple requests for their postion on this allegation. A previous blog writer, Kevin Siefert, is also a supect in a similar charge.

jay08 says:

July 21st, 2008 at 10:05 pm

They could put this all to rest by agreeing to a simple lie-detector test. It’s too late for Seifert though, he’s already on record.

jay08 says:

July 21st, 2008 at 10:13 pm

And Buster needs to take a lie-detector test too. Not to prove he’s a Vikings fan, just to prove how he really feels this season when T-Jack plays well and wins games for us. I want to know if Buster is totally joyful or if he has mixed emotions.

B. Grant says:

July 21st, 2008 at 10:17 pm

It is a tangled web they’ve weaved, and their silence only makes it worse.

Out a here.

Ed Sharockman says:

July 21st, 2008 at 10:23 pm

There used to be lengthy bios on all the writers, but the Strib or some gremlin got rid of them. It spoke about Judd’s years covering the Packers, although I don’t know how many years. If I had to guess, I’d say two years… but it’s just a guess. Mark Craig spent some time in GB too. I guess it’s a prerequisite to work in Green Bay before you cover the Vikings…

B. Grant says:

July 22nd, 2008 at 5:44 am

Makes some sense, Ed. Start in the minors, then get called up to the majors. That history does explain why we have all this coverage of the FFF, and why there has been more than the reasonable number of YKW pictures on the Strib Vike link. (I know…the tampering charge makes it a Vike item, but still…multiple identical pictures of a rival’s QB?)

MiamiViking says:

July 22nd, 2008 at 6:32 am

That’s an interesting point there might be some Strib policy about their writers not being fans of the teams they cover.

I’m thinking a FOIA request may be in order…

What’s up with Reusse’s column? The only reason the Vikings are asking for the roof is because the state said “no roof, no money.”

It’s too bad the vast majority of the population does not understand the economics of stadium financing and simply says “oh well I don’t want to pay 0.5% more in taxes, because it’s a TAX DAMNIT AND I’M BLEADING TO DEATH HERE!”

At this rate there won’t be an AV blog in 2012 at the Strib :(
