80-man concerns

July 19th, 2008 – 2:29 PM by Chip Scoggins

With training camp right around the corner, Vikings coach Brad Childress said the new rule limiting teams to 80 players in camp will likely affect the schedule in Mankato.

Teams used to be able to use at least six roster exemptions for players who had played in Europe, but with NFL Europa being shut down, that provision is no longer allowed.

Asked if he’s thinking of juggling things as far as who gets work and possibly trying to peel back, Childress said:

“If it’s diminishing returns what are you going to do it for? Are we better off to stay in this afternoon, unload them mentally, catch up on the film work, let some bodies heal and then get back out. You don’t need to be a slave driver. What you want is you want guys that push themselves internally and want to be better and understand that, ‘Hey, they’ve got an opportunity here.’ Are you going to work it to death or are you going to say you got an opportunity and be the same team when you finish?”
