Report: Vikings to look at Rogers
June 16th, 2008 – 9:05 AM by Judd ZulgadWe’re checking on this one because it seems like a long shot but the Saginaw (Mich.)Â News reported Sunday that former Detroit Lions receiver Charles Rogers is going to workout for the Vikings. Actually, that came from Rogers’ former high school coach Don Durrett.
“He’s had a couple workouts with some teams and has a workout with the Minnesota Vikings,” Durrett said. “He’s getting caught up [with playing in the NFL again]. I tell him to play where he can play and enjoy it. People get caught up on where the best spot for him is.”
Durrett’s comment come after Rogers made a verbal agreement to play with Montreal of the CFL but never signed his contract and did not go to training camp with the team.
Rogers was the second pick of the 2003 draft and ended up being released by the Lions in 2006.
Meanwhile, The Sporting News has the Vikings No. 1 in the NFC in its position rankings for running backs. These are done by conference. Jacksonville is No. 1 in the AFC. Here are the top five teams in the NFC: Minnesota, Philadelphia, Washington, New York Giants and Dallas.

Hey Judd, the Vikings also were listed for having the best Safeties AND Defensive Tackles in the NFC by Sporting News. For Linebackers, we were listed 6th and for Corners we were listed 4th.

Jerkpepper seems to know something about Charles Rogers. During the 2005 season, Rogers was suspended 4 games for a third violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy. As a result of this violation, the Lions filed a grievance, claiming that his drug suspension violated a clause in his contract, which would mean Rogers would be obligated to return $10 million of the $14.2 million the Lions gave him in bonuses. The grievance is still pending. The Detroit Free Press, would later reported that Rogers failed drug tests each year while at Michigan State.

Well, Shaun Rogers of the Lions was also suspended for substance violation. I would like to take this opportunity to point out that Charles Rogers, Shaun Rogers, and Kenny Rogers are not related.

He had some big numbers for Mich. State and was a high draft choice. But Yukon’s right, he’s another Koren Robinson. If he could stay clean for a season, he’d be worth a look and maybe could contribute like Robinson did that year. It would help us look the other way when Troy Williamson makes some catches for the Jags or Panthers or whoever aw who cares. And T-Will will make some catches.
From a pure talent standpoint, it’s not clear Rogers is the same guy who dominated in college. From Wikipedia:
“After his release, Rogers worked out for the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006, all of whom passed. Reportedly, Rogers worked out for the Kansas City Chiefs in January of 2007 and flopped the workout by running a 40-time of 4.8, which was a steep decline from the 4.28 that he ran at the Indianapolis combines four years prior.”
