An interesting story by the Associated Press out of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ minicamp today. Former Vikings receiver Troy Williamson, traded to the Jaguars for a sixth-round pick, is very happy to be out of Minnesota.
“I’d say it was very important [to leave the Vikings] because it was getting very intense up there as far as me and the head coach and some of the other coaches,” said Williamson, who was plagued by dropped passes in his time with the Vikings. “I feel like I just need to play football, be me and be comfortable in the situation.
“I had some good times in Minnesota. I can talk highly, but it can also go both ways. I’m here now and Minnesota is in the past. It’s time to get to work and do what I have to do to help the team.”
The funny, or maybe sad, thing about the AP story is it talks about how Williamson was spending extra time on the field catching passes. You might recall that last spring the same things were being written about Williamson as he stayed on the field after practice so he could work on catching passes.
I was talking to somebody today about Williamson and pointed out that while things did not workout in Minnesota it wasn’t for lack of effort by the Vikings. Granted the franchise had plenty to lose by seeing the seventh-overall pick in the 2005 draft fail, and thus it was a good idea to make an investment in seeing if things could be turned around, but the vision consultants from Nike couldn’t have been inexpensive.
It will be interesting to see if Williamson can turn things around in Florida. One thing we know from watching him, however, is that just because you can make all the catches on a practice field in May or June doesn’t mean you’ll be doing the same thing when it counts in December.
Hello everyone.
hello, back door. do you think the Jaguars might just have the kind of legitimate deep threat missing since Jimmy Smith retired two years ago?
Thanks, Judd. T-Will was lucky he wasn’t being paid by the catch…
This seems to be where we are this morning…
Williamson is happy to be out of Minnesota, and we are happy to have him out of here. Good for everyone, but part of being a deep threat in football is catching the ball when it gets to you!
Edwards is hurt, and Mitchell is taking his place? Uhhh, Robison?
TJax continues to get raves about his improvement. This is good, but must wait for games to see it.
McKinnie gets beat again. No change.
Jared Allen looks as good as advertised. Not surprising, but very good!
Judd is on the clock and feeding us with lots of good stuff. This is good.
My neighbor is building an ark. Hmmm?
Right Ed. Guys try to justify this start over thing by blaming the previous team. (ErJam) We are getting some of that from Williams out of Cincy, too. It probably helps their outlook and all, but Twill had every chance to succeed here, and flat out didn’t. It could be argued that he will have somewhat of a better QB in Jville, but Gerrard is still a passeer in progress too.
THE VIKINGS NEED A QUARTERBACK
AND WATCH WILLIAMSON MAKE THE PRO BOWL WITH HIS NEW CLUB
[…] As the Star-Tribune’s Judd Zulgad points out, it’s sorta funny that the AP story talks about how Williams is working overtime to improve as a pass catcher, something he also tried in Minnesota. Who knows if the outcome will be different in Jacksonville, but I applaud him for not giving up. […]

vikings are awesome..just saying
SKOL!! VIKES!
Hoo boy, what did Williamson expect the Vikings to do, keep him around and start him? How many games did he cost us with his dropped passes? He was overrated coming out of college, and the only thing he’s ever been able to do is run fast. The Vikings first round pick who was a bigger bust was Demetrius Underwood.
The fact that TW doesn’t have the brains to keep his mouth shut even now is quite telling. My guess is he’ll either get injured or cut. I don’t see him on the Jags roster opening day.
