Frerotte’s 2 cents

June 6th, 2008 – 2:08 PM by Judd Zulgad

Backup quarterback Gus Frerotte was asked for his first impressions of starter Tarvaris Jackson.

“Great athlete, good arm. Obviously knows the system. I like watching him play,” Frerotte said. “I think people have said things in the past about him but I think you’re going to see a different guy this year. Just from what I’ve seen, he’s improved a lot. I think the way he’s playing now in these OTAs, it’s going to be interesting to see in minicamp and especially when we get to training camp how he’s progressed over his time and in the NFL.”

Frerotte was signed in part because the Vikings feel he will be a good influence on Jackson and can give the second-year starter some pointers.

“I know one thing that I’m going to harp on with him [will be], ‘Look, be a pocket quarterback first. Don’t just try and run first because these guys are all bigger and faster than you. No matter how fast or tough you think you are,’” Frerotte said. “I’ve seen it and tried to do that with Daunte [Culpepper] when I was here. [I told him], ‘Go through your reads, get to the back, let them do the work for you.’ That’s why we always say, ‘Get the ball to the playmakers.’

“But when he gets out in the open field he can be a play-maker too. He’s fast, he can move, he can juke people. That’s not his first option. I think he’s doing a great job of really trying to get the system down, understanding the reads and then let that just happen.”

Here is some more interesting stuff from the Birk interview that Judd left out for some reason:

Ironically, Birk used a phrase nearly identical to the one that Childress used earlier this week when the Vikings were building a playground for a charter school in Minneapolis.

Childress was asked why he was mixing concrete instead of doing lighter duty at that event. “Everyone is useful, no one is necessary. The more you can do, the better off you are,” he said.

Said Birk of his outlook on his career: “The thing I’ve learned is that every single person in the NFL is replaceable. Everyone is useful, but nobody is necessary. It doesn’t matter who you are. I know I can be replaced quickly. I don’t lose sight of that.”

Birk reiterated several times over the course of an interview with reporters on Friday that he is thankful for his time in the NFL up to this point.

“When I take a step back and look at it, I have nothing to complain about,” he said. “In 1998, I just wanted a chance, just a chance somewhere to play and I never lose sight of that. Eleven years later, to be with this team, I’m extremely fortunate. Whatever happens, happens. The powers that be and my agent, they can do business or whatever. My job is to play football and take care of business on the field.”

With his first organized practice since last season only hours away, Birk said he would find out what kind of football shape he is in. He has been working out with former Viking Mike Morris to keep up his strength, but he admitted that the only way to be in football shape is to practice and play football.

But he has appreciated the time to get away from football and tend to family matters.

“The time you have to put into this during the season is non-negotiable,” he said. “There are a couple of factors, the biggest one being my family. It’s a busy time, it’s a blessed time for us. But I felt like I was just needed there a little bit more.”

He also indicated he would report to training camp, even with the timing of the report date conflicting with his birthday on July 23.

“That’s kind of a bummer,” said the 31-year old. “But I don’t foresee any problems

That last part got cut off:

“That’s kind of a bummer,” said the 31-year old. “But I don’t foresee any problems with me going there as long as there is a birthday cake or something.”

Hate to throw Gus under the bus, but when he said ” I think you’re going to see a different guy this year”, I am wondering who Gus thinks that guy will be? Him? Brooksie? Booty?

Your old Pal Fragile thinks the Vikes are handling the Birks situation perfectly. What’s the rush in signing hims? It was clear last years that his play has fallen off. Let’s see what Matty B has left, if he’s done, well bring on the next guys… Just cuz Matt is from here, doesn’t mean a darn thing to your old pal fragile.

kenny - He was referring to Ray Edwards, but he just couldn’t remember his name.

Birk = class guy, but Vikes probably better off taking the wait and see approach; also makes sense to hold off negotiating with guys nearing the end of their career until you’re done negotiating with guys that are just beginning.

I agree, Mud. I’d like to have him around for another couple years, though.

I’m out.
