not a single TE? geez, does Chili actually think Shiancoe is working out? It would do T-Jax a world of good to know he has a check down that wont drop the ball.

Wow. This draft was obviously all about value and getting bang for your buck. Looks like another excellent draft is on the books. If only Minnesota’s other pro teams could draft this well…..

Easy to get Henderson and Radovich - one guy follows his brother, and the other follows his QB. Good thing the Vikes didn’t let them go.

South…..Garrett Mills is an excellent pass-catching TE….and can work the seam. He and Paul Smith tore it up together at Tulsa two years ago. I bet we see a lot of him this year.

There is another team that drafts well around here - the Wild. Gaborik, Koivu, Bouchard, Pouliot, Sheppard, and so on. Lots of good players all taken through the draft. But the past two drafts have been good to the Vikes.

40for60 - I hope you’re right about seeing Mills; it was hard to tell last year since he only got about 2 attempts. Still, if Shiancoe is a bust and Kleinsasser is getting up there in mileage, we need more than just Mills.

Good point about Erin H. When E.J. came out of MD as the Butkus winner there were concerns about what was feared to be his chronic back problems. E.J. only came into his own when the Vikes moved him to MLB as he struggled in coverage on the outside. Should have been a Pro Bowler last year.

south-a-state says:

April 27th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

And its not clear Radovich should count as a T - he split time T/G at USC, and several of the analysts I read projected he’d need to play inside to make it in the big league.

WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT BOOTY…

USC head coach Pete Carroll: “He’s got great accuracy. He’s a natural thrower. He has natural instincts for throwing the ball, all different kinds of throws, and putting the ball right on the money. There’s tremendous promise there for us and for him…His poise is awesome. His execution, his accuracy, his decision-making are great…There’s nothing we feel like we can’t do with John David that we did with Matt Leinart.”

USC offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Steve Sarkisian: “He’s like Greg Maddux in the way he can put the ball in the spot it needs to be.”

Craig James, ESPN: “I’m just amazed at the way he controls games. With all those new players in 2006, he kept that thing together. Even though the games were closer, they still won. I just didn’t expect him to play as well as he did. His footwork, his poise in the pocket, his arm strength, it looks like he’s been doing this for three years.”

Former USC quarterback Pat Haden, now with NBC-TV: “I can’t imagine steeping into a position in college football like he did in 2006. He followed the two best quarterbacks in USC history, and yet he was remarkably calm and very, very efficient.”

Former USC Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Matt Leinart: “John David is a very good player and he pushed me to get better. I was confident that if I wasn’t able to go, he could move the offense…I think he’s going to have a great career.”

Former USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow: “In terms of physical talent, John David’s as good as anybody I’ve coached.”

Former USC All-American center Ryan Kalil: “He’s just so calm about everything. There’s nothing that really rattles him. I know no one likes to throw an interception, but I think he’d act the same if he threw a pick or a touchdown pass.”

USC All-American offensive tackle Sam Baker: “He sat and waited his turn and he learned. He’s a natural born leader…He’s been the rock, one solid guy.”

Former USC All-American wide receiver Steve Smith: “He’s like a silent killer. He doesn’t say much, he just gets the job done. I’m proud of what he’s done. He’s lived up to every expectation.”

Notre Dame safety Tom Zbikowski: “He can put the ball between defenders. There was a lot of close games they came away with a win, and he had a lot to do with that.”

Former Michigan linebacker Dave Harris: “He’s their leader. He puts the ball in his playmakers’ hands. He has a very strong arm, he can make all the throws. Give him time, he can pick you apart.”

Two messages sent with the draft, one to Darren Sharper with the Johnson pick, and one to Matt Birk with the Sullivan pick. However, that placekicker from N.C. State was the highest rated kicker coming out of college this year. Is Childress unhappy with Longwell, or something?

One thing’s for sure: Childress better not axe the veterans until he knows these guys we picked up this weekend can handle the job.

The message is that you have to have some deep brain cells and the respective ability to use them in the NFL if you want to play center. Otherwise, it will be a very rough go of it at the position. For all we know, Birk will retire in another year or two, and be under contract to train his replacement to the Pro-Bowl. Gotta love how team operates in secret until we find out months later the rest of the story……

Navynate says:

Man I would hate to see Matty B go, he’s been a great player, but to draft Sullivan was smart to learn from Birk for 2 or 3 years before Birk is ready to retire. Play him at guard this year and then we would have more depth on the OL, something we always can use. And give Bird some snaps off helps him to be fresher for the snaps he is playing. More OL Depth= more rushing yards and passing yards= more wins too.

daunte11 says:

jersey: spelling not a requirement for blogging

Navy: tough to give rookie OL snaps outside of preseason. Teams can only activate 47 + a 3rd string QB. Usually only 7 sometimes 8 OL active. Hence the premium on OL versatility.

DRAFT STEALS ACCORDING TO SI

Mike Jenkins/CB/Dallas /1st round: Jenkins was top 15 talent but turned off a number of people with his attitude leading up to the draft. He’s always been productive on the field and offers the Cowboys starting potential.

Quentin Groves/DE/Jacksonville/2nd round: Groves had issues off the field. That concerned some teams who were not quite sure where the 255-pound defensive end would play in the NFL. He possesses 4.5 speed and was one of the better pass rushers in the draft, which makes him a bargain for Jacksonville.

Chad Henne/QB/Miami/2nd round: Henne fell much further into the second round then most thought. Miami swiped him late in the frame and he could soon be starting behind center for the quarterback-needy team.

Cliff Avril/DE/Detroit/3rd round: Avril was criticized for underproducing as a senior and not meeting expectations. He’ll find a niche as a pass rusher for the Lions.

Justin King/CB/St. Louis /4th round: King’s play was uninspired last season yet his pre-draft workouts and high character had many thinking he’d be drafted early in the second round.

Jonathan Goff/MLB/New York Giants/5th round: Goff is a future replacement at middle linebacker for Antonio Pierce. Scouts though he had third-round value coming out of the combine.

Marcus Howard/DE/Indianapolis/5th round: Indianapolis loves their defensive linemen undersized and explosive. Howard is 6-0, runs a 4.4 and recorded 10 sacks last season.

John Sullivan/C/Minnesota/6th round: Sullivan was the highest-rated center coming into the season before poor play drove down his draft grade. He’s legitimately a third-round talent who could be starting for the Vikings in a year.

Paul Hubbard/WR/Cleveland/7th round: The speedy Hubbard is considered a prospect with great upside. He was slowed by a knee injury last season yet has all the skills to be a third wideout in the NFL.

Marcus Monk/WR/Chicago/7th round: Monk is a physical receiver with reliable hands who many considered a first-day pick before a knee injury slowed him last season. He can play at the next level once he gets back to health.

Drew Boylhart December 2007
John David Booty QB USC

STRENGTHS
John has good overall size and athleticism to play QB at the next level. He has great arm strength and shows excellent accuracy. John moves well in the pocket and understands situational football. He understands what a coach is trying to accomplish with a game plan and shows great leadership and management skills. John can run any type of offense, but his strength at the next level will be in a west coast offense because of his accuracy and the ability to make quick decisions.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE
John could use a little more bulk on his frame to handle the pounding at the next level a QB takes over the course of a sixteen game schedule. As with all QB’s, more consistency in his set up and mechanics would make his arm strength better.

TALENT BOARD ROUND 1
John David Booty is the type of QB that people like to downgrade because he is not flashy. If you do, you are making a big mistake. Do not mistake his ability to be efficient for a lack of talent. This year, John had to play with freshman WR’s, no RB and an offensive line that blocks as well as a shoe salesman trying to hold back a crowd of women ready to enter the store at the start of a shoe sale. The only reason you don’t see John on his ass all the time is because he gets rid of the ball quickly and knows where he is going with the ball before the play starts because he reads defenses. That’s how far along he is in his football maturity. Matt Ryan (QB Boston College) and John are the two top QB’s in this draft, in my opinion. They are both top ten picks in my book. Right now, everyone is downgrading John because USC lost some games and John was injured and tried to play with a broken finger. He did all of this without a running game to rely on or a very good offensive line. Without John, USC would have been hard pressed to even make a bowl game. John is going to be a hell of a QB at the next level. He reminds me a lot of Peyton Manning and I believe John has the potential to be just as good a QB as Peyton is for the team that drafts him.

Marcus Griffin S Texas

STRENGTHS

Marcus has a lot of repetitions as a safety for his college team. He has good size, speed and overall good athletic talent to play his position. He has solid tackling skills and does a good job playing up close to the line of scrimmage. Marcus has some coverage skills and does is strong defending in zone coverage as well. He has the potential to be a solid safety at the next level.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE

Marcus is one of the most inconsistent players that I have ever seen and there is no real reason for it. He has not improved from one year to the next. My guess is that he doesn’t have a very good work ethic and there might be football maturity issues.

TALENT BOARD ROUND 5

Marcus has the talent — he just is not concerned with being consistent. He should be a lot better than he is right now, but he is not and it all comes down to consistency. He can run, cover and tackle, but he does not play smart. He makes one great tackle or hit and he is done for the game. I guess he thinks that he is going to get away with that type of play at the next level. If Marcus learns to play smarter and with more consistency, he may be a solid safety for the team that drafts him. It’s all up to him.

krugjr says:

Erin Henderson LB Maryland

STRENGTHS

Erin is a very good LB. He has good size, speed and instincts to play his position. Erin exhibits some leadership skills. He is a smart player and looks to me like he has the size to play more than one position at the next level for the team that drafts him. Erin has improved every year I have seen him play. He has a lot of potential to become a core player for the team that drafts him.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE

He is very good against the run, but lacks confidence defending against the pass at the college level. He is slow to turn, run and tackle when defending against the pass. Erin has improved in spite of having some serous injuries; he rebounded very well from a bad knee injury, but knee injuries are always a concern as to how well they will hold up. He has good north-south speed and burst, but lacks the true fluidity to cover on pass plays; however, he is smart and does compensate. His impact position at the next level, in my opinion, is WLB and he should be a very good one.

TALENT BOARD ROUND 2

Erin is a natural WLB. He is strong against the run and does a hell of a job rushing the QB. He can impact at the next level very quickly if the team that drafts him plays him at WLB. If some coach decides he wants to move him to one of the other LB positions because of his size, then I’m afraid it is going to take a few years for him to get used to a new position and it will lessen his ability to impact when he tries to defend in the passing game. As a WLB, all you have to do is let him rush on passing downs and stop the run on running plays. He is a perfect fit for that style of WLB. Because his talent has limits, I have to give this kid a second round talent grade, but don’t be fooled by that grade. This kid, if drafted by the right team who doesn’t want to try and turn him into this “all knowing” type of LB and uses him in the first year like I suggest, will be one of the better draft choices in this draft. Either way, this kid has a bright future in the NFL. He is a good LB with the potential to improve and become an excellent LB for the team that drafts him. He is also the type of player that with some good workouts could sneak into the first round. Personally, I would think the Giants would be real interested in this kid!

krugjr says:

Drew Boylhart April 2008

Jeremy Leman LB Illinois

STRENGTHS

Jeremy is one of the LB’ s in this draft that has the instincts, reactions and intelligence to be an excellent ILB in a 3-4 defense. He reminds me a lot of Teddy Bruschi (LB NE Patriots). He just knows how to play the game of football and shows very good leadership skills along with some solid cover skills. He is an excellent run stuffing LB because he understands leverage and positioning. Jeremy’s biggest strength is his ability to raise the level of play of his teammates around him. His quickness, instincts and intelligence allows for Jeremy to play faster than he times and allows him to be able to cover one-on-one in the passing game. Teams that use a 3-4 defense should rate Jeremy higher in this draft than teams that do not run a 3-4 defense.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE

Jeremy is coming off an ankle operation. Hopefully this injury will not affect his “in the box” quickness. Jeremy could play as a strong side LB in a 4-3, but his strength will be as an ILB in a 3-4 defense.

TALENT BOARD ROUND 4

Make no mistake about it — Jeremy is a very good LB. He is a systems LB and he does have to prove that his injury will not affect his quickness, but like I said, if you’re a 3-4 defensive team, go look at the game film and you’re going to see a LB that fits that ILB 3-4 system like a hand to a glove. Jeremy’s intelligence and instincts add up to a pretty good strong side LB in a 4-3, but his true impact position and one he can play right away if his ankle is healed will be that ILB 3-4 position. Like I said, he reminds me a lot of Teddy Bruschi and I feel that if he had been able to work out, we would all be talking about this kid as a third rounder in this draft. Jeremy’s injury makes him a bit of a sleeper in this draft, but if that ankle is all right, then some team in the later rounds is going to get themselves a hell of a good LB.

John Sullivan OC Notre Dame

STRENGTHS
John is an excellent center and the best one in this draft because he can play against any style of defensive front. He can hold his ground against the bull rush, but has the athleticism to slide and help out. He also has the athletic agility to go to the next level to block a LB. He has quick enough feet to pull and trap without getting hung up. John is quick out of his stance and can handle the shotgun snap without a problem. He shows good leadership skills and this year, as his teammates struggled around him, John showed leadership skills and patience well beyond his years.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE
John will have to build up his upper body to handle the strength of the DT’s he will go up against. But he is smart and does understand that leverage and techniques are offensive centers’ best friends.

TALENT BOARD ROUND 2
John has the talent and brains to start right away for the team that drafts him, but he really should just sit and learn and get bigger for a year or two as he backs up his teammates and learns the ropes. John is going to be an excellent center and the truth is that most of the other centers in this draft are system centers, but John can play against any style of front you want to throw up against him. Most “experts” are going to suggest to you that because John was on a team that struggled this year, he’s not a very good center; nothing could be further from the truth. Good players come from struggling college teams all the time and to suggest that a player is not as good one year from the next because his team struggled one year and did not struggle before is ridiculous. John did not get worse from last year to this year because his team was not as good. Scouts and GM’s that insist he did are just not thinking correctly or looking at the film objectively. The truth is John is smart, uses excellent techniques and leverage and has the athleticism to play his position at a high level for the team that drafts him. What he lacks more than anything is playing strength. As soon as he builds himself up you will have a Pro Bowl offensive center. My guess to what round John will be drafted in will depend on his workouts, but a smart team will not let him drop into the 4th round if they need a future Pro Bowl center.

krugjr = graduated from the Monc School of cut and paiste. Good info. Did I see before you’re moving to MT? Where? I’m from MT as well.

Guys on NFL Network just put out 3 teams that were draft winners, including the Vikes, based mostly on JA and JDB. Not sure if it was a recorded show or not, but probably since it’s 11:50 on the east coast.

Seems like most people love the Booty pick. I mentioned some skepticism earlier, but will bow to the experts.

Was absolutely sure that Detroit Lion drafted Erin Moore from Maryland at top of 5th round. Was this reported incorrectly?

That Erin Moore went through undrafted is a huge surprise and makes no sense. Well, we’ve got ourselves a LB

All in all this did turn into a very good draft for the vikings. The pick for Johnson has alot of upside when examined closely. Also getting Booty means we finally have a another decent back up to TJ along with Gus. And we def. need a back up to Birk if he isn’t going to be playing for us in the future and Sullivan sounds he could turn out to be a pretty good center. The other two picks we will just have to wait and see how they turn out. Hopefully they got a couple of gems in the later rounds. This front office sure has been impressive for a long time with the drafts and FA’s. Sure glad McCombs and Tice are gone! Skol Vikings!!

thanks for the exchange, we’ll keep in touch…..better get a little more packing done, spent a lot of time in front of the TV this weekend, but it sure was fun…good times coming for the Vikes!

where do live now?

Krug - About 25 miles north of Seattle - little town called Mukilteo.

Too busy today to spend much time watching the draft. Seems like so-called experts think we did pretty well. Many in here like the FA signings today as well. Certainly a lot of reason for an improved team this year.

Time for beddy-bye…

Morning all.

Scouts, Inc. listed the top 11 undrafted FA’s from this weekend and the Vikes signed 3 of the 11.

Henderson was listed as #1, Griffin and Radovich were the other 2.

Peter King on Monday Morning QB says Vikings had the 3rd best draft. J. Allen in the first,,,the best DE in the League, Johnson who he feels is the best saftey in the draft and Booty a nery good baxk-up/starter!!!!!

The few times I saw J Leman play he looked good. I think he can contribute on special teams and as a back up LB.

This is good except I don’t see any decent linemen in this group!!

Should have never wasted a pick on Booty!

Does anyone out there know where woodhead ended up??

Jake says:

Fifth round and after is almost always speculative. The only reason anyone is even thinking about those guys is because we didn’t have any other picks this year.

If they work out, great. If they don’t, it’s not like we had a bad draft.

We came out of this draft with a Pro Bowl DE pass rusher and a very good safety prospect and a pretty decent future QB prospect. I’d be willing to bet Booty could be in a position to compete for the starting spot next year if T. Jack falters.

Draft results seem very good to me.

Do the free agents get paid only if they make the team? I guess is what I’m asking is do they get paid from now until they get cut?

WVUviking says:

Reynaud will be a great addition to special teams due to his great speed and explosive ability. Could be a good option for a slot reciever.

A couple of thoughts RE: OL.
1)Centers are usually brainiacs (that’s why I warn’t one!), something about multi-tasking….
2)They like to take college centers and make them into NFL guards. Reason: see 1) above
3) Right or wrong, I think the Vikes have faith in the Johnson boys upside at tackle.
4) IF Big Mac is suspended, it shouldn’t be a Pacman Jones thing, unless more comes out bad. I hear more has come out, but not bad (put down the pipe!)
