The latest on Jared Allen/UPDATED with pretty pictures

April 18th, 2008 – 12:55 PM by Judd Zulgad

Defensive end Jared Allen is at Winter Park right now talking to Vikings officials. It’s also believed his agent, Ken Harris, is in the building. That means only one thing: they are talking contract. The latest we’re hearing is that an agreement with the Chiefs is close to being in place and this thing could get done quick. We emphasize the word could, so don’t get too excited yet.

Click here to watch some groundbreaking moving pictures.

Allen is going to want a lot of Zygi Wilf’s money. Safe to say, the NFL’s sack leader from 2007 is going to want more than the Colts gave end Dwight Freeney last July. Freeney’s six-year contract – $72 million over six years with a $30 million signing bonus — made him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.

Considering the fact a player with Allen’s ability could make this one of the top defenses in the NFL, the guess is that Wilf and Co. will pay the price.

Update: As of 3:50 p.m., Allen remains inside Winter Park. How do we know this? Well, a very big limousine is sitting in the parking lot of the Vikings facility. The Vikings also had limos wait outside when they were negotiating with free agents Bernard Berrian and Madieu Williams.

Update II: The Chiefs had a pre-draft media briefing today in Kansas City and to no one’s surprise team President Carl Peterson was asked about the Allen situation. “If we wanted to prohibit Jared and his agent from having the opportunity to look at teams, we would have put the exclusive franchise tag on him,” Peterson said. “We didn’t do that. In years past, we have used the exclusive. So we’ll see what happens, but to this point, nothing has happened. To continue to talk about it over the next 24-48 hours, is just pure speculation. If something does happen, we’ll let you know. If it doesn’t happen, he’s certainly our franchise player.”

Thank Jeff for that!

But wisvike, tell me this: why are you so quick to forgive and believe in Jared Allen but you have a maniacal hatred of Favre… when Favre DID ‘clean his life up’, overcame his addictions and made amends - either personally or by virtue of a court order - either way he ‘paid his dues’ so to speak…

Maybe to your screwy way of thinking Favre’s problems weren’t as ‘difficult’ as Allen’s. Or wait, maybe he got ’special treatment’ because he was in Sconnie and you know how those Puker fans are - they never criticized him, they never said a bad word about him or his onfield mistakes and they certainly put him on a pedestal…huh…

Yep, I see your point. I see the light!

Now where did I put that purple and gold thong Ole sent me…

CJ - I hate Brett Favre because it’s all about him and not anything about the team. I never said it was easy for him and his problems, what I have said is that people made him to be a saint and never talk about his past, but with ohter players, especially Vikings when fans of the pack talk, they say that green bay is holy and trouble free but vikings will always be bad people.

Yes, the fans in wisconsin did and still do put him on a pedestal. Including you.

Or maybe a displaced patriot, defending his love of MN teams to the delusional folk in Badgerland? :-)

Vikings South says:

April 18th, 2008 at 1:27 pm

On the 3-4 vs. 4-3 end thing:

“The responsibility of a 3-4 end is 10 times harder than the responsibility of a 4-3 end,” said Pittsburgh end Kimo von Oelhoffen. “You’re on the edge (in the 4-3). You’ve got great angles for stopping the run, and great angles for rushing the quarterback. That’s why those guys get sacks.”

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?id=1946758

There are several intricacies that define a 3-4 defense but the biggest difference from a personnel standpoint, in teams playing a 3-4, is in the criteria for playing the “defensive end” position. Here is a closer look at exactly what we are talking about:

In the more traditional and popular 4-3 your ends are best suited for lining up in space and rushing the passer on outside the edge of the tackle. Those players usually weight between 260 and 275 pounds. The are athletic and agile and their strength is getting up field with quickness and lean. The ideal 4-3 end also possesses an ability to lean and turn the corner and squeeze the pocket in which the quarterback is standing. Teams are wiling to give up size and strength for speed and edge rushing ability. The perfect fit for this style of defender is Carolina Panther Julius Peppers.

On the other hand a 3-4 defensive end is more like a defensive tackle. He must be strong at the point of attack and is aligned in most cases head up on an offensive tackle and must control runs gaps first and foremost. Size and strength become more of a factor because he plays in confines of line play and seldom is in space using athletic ability. Ideally this guy should weigh 275-290 pounds and be able to beat double teams by getting a push. It’s a more physical task then that of a 4-3 end.

The thinking is that the 3-4 defensive end is easier to identify and find when it comes to scouting and acquiring personnel. Pass rushers like Peppers and the Colts Dwight Freeney are rare and hard to find and therefore very expensive to keep. There is no question that speed pass rushers are very much an impact position on the football field and their cap numbers reflect that. On the other hand, 3-4 defensive ends can be found easier and are much less expensive when it comes to “cap dollars”.

Monctonvike says:

Kato, that is not how it works for players of Allen’s potential. He will want his 35 mil guranteed and if we sign him for like 5 years look for him to get 60 mil

all that money and all of those draft picks for one guy. When this team has so many needs at OL,QB and even maybe DB we also need another S on roster

At least the guy wants to play on a winning team…and with him at the DE spot for the Vikes, that’s what we’d be next year for sure.

If he was just in it for the money, he’d be off in Oakland or Washington trying to sign.

Hopefully that affords us some leeway when working out contract details with him.

Let’s not forget that we gotta pay Purple Jesus at some point…!

Vikings South says:

April 18th, 2008 at 1:39 pm

If Allen has been a 3-4 end up until now, think what he could do being freed up by the 4-3. Be very afraid.

The Chiefs have been supposedly in transition between 4-3 and 3-4. But I think Allen’s been playing mainly 4-3 end. So I don’t think there will be much he’ll have to do to adjust.

The Optimists Club is about to get larger. (I know, just what you’d expect an optimist to say. But I was a probationary member for much of last season.)

Monctonvike says:

KatoVikesFan says:

April 18th, 2008 at 1:48 pm

So is Allen more suited to play as a 3-4 end or a 4-3 end? It sounds like either way, he would be a very good pick up for the Vikes.

He should be willing to agree to a “drunken rampage clause” in his contract if he is confident in himself that he has cleaned up his act, which I believe he is. If he is not agreeable to a special clause in his contract regarding drinking, then that might be an indication to Vikings management that he is not fully confident in his ability to stay clean.

Monctonvike says:

April 18th, 2008 at 1:53 pm

The thing is like no other sport football is a team game.

For instance Tom Brady would have looked like a joke if he played for ST. Louis or Oakland.

All we can do is wait and see what happens IF this deal gets done.

There are no gurantee’s he doesn’t crack under the pressure of a big contract or just not work well into the vikes scheme. All we can do is wait. I’ll quote adam Scefter from last night ” Jared Allen is going to be the ultimate Boom or bust player when this is all said and done”

If it is Boom awsome I am truely excited as many of you are. If it is Bust this sets the franchise back for many years

wisvike says:

Scouts Inc from ESPN.com on Jared Allen:

“Grade 88
Expert’s Take Allen arguably has become Kansas City’s most valuable defender. He’s a high-energy, gifted pass rusher who plays the run as well as he pressures quarterbacks. He probably lacks any elite pass-rushing tool, but he does everything well enough to be consistently dangerous. He plays big and uses his long arms to keep blockers off his body. He rarely gives offensive linemen a solid shot at his frame. He wears out opponents by simply coming at them, continually, with seemingly boundless energy. He goes all-out until the whistle on every play. He excels at locating the level of the ball while warding off blockers. He has a knack for shedding blocks at just the right time to disengage and make the play. He has improved his ability to stack up at the point of attack and can squeeze down blocks to plug up run lanes. Allen has had some well-documented off-field issues, but he is all business on the field. He’ll command as much interest as any free agent in the offseason.”

and he’s not undersized (270 lbs) for an end, he won’t have any problems if there are even any adjustments he would have to make coming here…

Vikings South says:

April 18th, 2008 at 1:58 pm

Monc: He might BE the best DE in the league (Freeney has 9 sacks over the last two seasons). We aren’t going to get anyone nearly as good at No. 17, at our position of direst need, and losing a No. 2 or 3 doesn’t trouble me nearly as much as letting Allen get away.

And ordinary DEs in free agency are getting paid $6-8 million a year. $10-12 million is a lot of money, but I think, relatively speaking, Allen is worth it.

OK Allen’s stats are good. He should be good for a minimum of 8-10 sacks a year next to the Williams boys. If E. James can stay healthy and live up remotely to his expectations, we would have a top tier D-line. I still like Taylor though. Less money for less time for less draft picks and would be able to perform at a high level for 2-3 years.

explain how matt birk can call out randy moss for his antics, but yet i haven’t read a single article on him calling out bryant mckinnie. maybe birk is a punk ass biatch and knows bryant would beat that ass…..i could be wrong be these are just my opinions.

Everyone who wants to trade for Allen needs to remember the Walker trade and how it set our franchise back a decade. Do you all want to see the Chiefs win a couple of SBs thanks to the additional picks they have from us, which will likely be high ones? He is not worth two first round picks.

Cajun Jeep says:

April 18th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

dre, I completely agree with you. Not sure on Birk either, but one has to wonder why he’s so quiet re: McKinnie.

Could be he’s just sick and tired of the whole organization, so why bother speaking out?

Slim says:

April 18th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

If another team signs him to an offer sheet and KC decides not to match the offer and Allen leaves, then KC would get two first rounders. This would not be the case because KC is trading him.

Since this is the NFL and not the NBA, contracts are not guaranteed. Ergo, if you’re injured, it’s difficult to make those incentives, so only an idot would make the majority of their contract incentive based. Durrrrrr …

Speaking of apples to oranges: There’s no comparing the king’s ransom we gave up for Herschel Walker (3 firsts, 3 seconds, a third, a sixth, three starters and a couple other players — minus the 2 thirds, a fifth and a tenth we got back) with the two picks we’d give up for Allen, even if they are both first rounders, which seems unlikely.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Billionaire developer Edward P. Roski Jr. has made a commitment to build the kind of stadium an NFL team needs to thrive in Los Angeles. Now, he’s hoping one will commit to play there.

Roski, a part owner of the NFL’s Kings and NBA team the Lakers who has spent years trying to lure the NFL back to this area, unveiled plans Thursday for a 75,000-seat facility in the City of Industry he said could be finished in time for the 2011 season.

“I intend to develop our stadium project that meets all of the NFL requirements, and more,” Roski said at a Staples Center news conference, where stadium models and artist renditions were displayed. “Always the most important thing has been the certainty of doing this. A team is not going to commit to coming to Los Angeles without a stadium. We’ve taken this one point of uncertainty and made it a certainty. The stadium is a certainty and it will be built.”

Attention: People who somehow manage to call themselves “legislators” in St. Paul should wake up and smell the coffee. Chasing multimillion-dollar enterprises out of the state of Minnesota is a very good way to start a depression. You can claim you did not see the bent gusset plates on the bridge, but this warning sign is printed in the papers for any fool to read. Open your eyes. You are not holding Zyg hostage. Hey Bucky……how about old #79 Doug Martin in place of Al Noga?

When I see Allen, I think more John Randle than Doleman; more of a pure motor guy. Doleman was speed kills…..

JetCityVikesFan says:

Buster - if you didn’t go thru them so fast, you’d be OK. Until this shipment arrives, maybe you could run out back and grab a couple gophers.

4Ever Viking says:

April 18th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

Word is that Jared Allen is going to take a physical for the Vikings tonight or tomorrow. This should be great news for Vikings fans, as it’s beginning to look very likely that Minnesota will pull the trigger on a deal for him. I really believe that it’s doubtful that the Vikings allow Allen to leave without a new deal and a trade agreement in place.

Where’s that news coming from 4Ever??

Monctonvike says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:09 pm

NFL NETWORK JUST REPORTED THAT ALLEN AND THE VIKES ARE NOWHERE NEAR A DEAL!

kennyrogers says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:10 pm

Looks like Jar-Al (superman?) will be signed. Now, what to do with McKinnie. He is a big piece of the puzzle and hard to replace.
I think McKinnie and Allen have both learned their lessons and will be good boys. Of course the millions and millions of dollars they are getting helps. But it ain’t coming out of our accounts, so who cares?

Monctonvike says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:12 pm

IF you watch the rerun later tonight its about 5 to 10 minutes into total access when they switch to Mary strong after she is done blabbing about yesterdays news about McNair (hasbeen like Farve) they go on to talk about the Allen trade for a full 20 seconds or so

kennyrogers says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:12 pm

i guess it looks like he won’t be signed.

Monctonvike says:

akvikesfan says:

I would love to go to Alaska..nothing funny there

Monctonvike says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

for those of you that have the NFL network they are also interviewing AP tonight

akvikesfan says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Well, let me know when… you’ll have an igloo to crash in. Alaska: The Land of 10,000 Minnesotans.

akvikesfan says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:24 pm

So the interview and the Jared Allen blurb are both on NFL ACCESS, is that right? Worth DVRing I guess.

Lost Viking says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:25 pm

The 2008 first pick, 2008 second pick plus $ 30 million signing bonus? Sorry, that deal doesn’t make any sense.

IMI556 says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

ESPN is reporting the deal is done. Just finalizing with KC.

JetCityVikesFan says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

Buster - you’ll need to apologize for that one. :-)

Vi King says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:30 pm

One thing we know, JA and his agent are currently at Winter Park, and If they weren’t working on something he’d be gone to TB.

Have some faith KR, it’ll go.

FargoVikesFan says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Allen will be a Viking before weekend is over…

Vi King says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:32 pm

Total Access was basing their info on the KC press confrence. Carl Peterson is playing it cool.

akvikesfan says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:32 pm

The interesting thing about this deal is that it has a very “Do or Die” feel to it. With Spielman getting an extension, Frazier getting a promotion, and Chili getting a vote of confidence from Zygi… I’m surprised they are considering such a deal.

With that being said, I’m not surprised in a bad way necessarilly. I think Allen is a great player who will improve this teams chances immensily. He’s only 26, so if we can get a 6 or 7 year deal out of him then a first and second doesn’t sound all that bad.

Also, I’ve been a little concerned about the facts that the Vikes do not seem to be preparing for an uncapped year next year, so I kind of like this move. The Vikings can sign Allen (or anyone else) right now during a trade for a heck of a lot cheaper than if he were to hit the free market next year in an uncapped year.

As far as the picks go. General history would show you that we only end up getting one good player out of both those picks anyways. Allen is consistent baller, with pro bowl abilities. He makes us a force in 2008, no doubt, but the question is whether it is worth it.

With high priced, quality vets, like Birk, Sharper, Sasser, McKinnie, Winfield, C. Taylor, and Pat Williams all having cloudy futures… I like this move… especially if the picks are for 2009.

JetCityVikesFan says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:32 pm

Lost - if it gets us where we need to be and Zygi’s on board with the dough, it makes a lot of sense. Now, I suspect we will package some of our picks to get back into the 2nd round of the draft.

Vi King says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:34 pm

I like Fargo’s style

I give you my own personal guarantee that I’ll be wearing a purple allen jersey made in china come Sept 8.

kennyrogers says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:37 pm

I heard Allen’s dad, Ron Allen, played for Vikings. Anybody remember? Having a hard time finding anything. Found this:
Ron, like his son, took a long time to get his act together. He spent his sophomore year of high school in juvenile detention for stealing a car. He found football and later played at Jamestown College. Though talented, Ron didn’t make it to the NFL. He stuck for two seasons with the USFL as a running back and tried out for the Chiefs and Vikings but came up short.

Vi King says:

April 18th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

I also like the deal because I feel if JA is a Vikings, it will somehow soften the heart of Buster and some of his friends.

D wins championships, who needs the best o in the league
