Allen on Vikings’ radar; Udeze to appear at benefit

April 17th, 2008 – 12:07 PM by Judd Zulgad

The Vikings search for a pass-rushing defensive end could land them Kansas City’s Jared Allen. An NFL source confirmed to the Star Tribune that the Vikings are holding trade talks to obtain Allen, who led the NFL with 15.5 sacks in 2007

Allen told Foxsports.com that he is flying to Minnesota this weekend to visit with the Vikings. Allen also said the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in the mix. The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Allen in February, meaning Allen would stand to make almost $9 million in 2008 (the average of the five highest-paid defensive ends in the NFL).

That might be more than the rebuilding Chiefs (4-12 in 2007) want to invest in a player. Acquiring Allen would be a huge boost for a Vikings team that lacks depth at the end positions and was unable to land Justin Smith, Antwan Odom or Jevon Kearse in free agency. The Vikings have not had a defensive end with 10 or more sacks since the 2004 season and the team leaders (Ray Edwards, Kenechi Udeze and Ben Leber) each had five last season.

UPDATE: Chiefs President Carl Peterson issued a statement confirming the Chiefs have held “preliminary” trade talks for Allen with a “few” teams. The full text of Peterson’s statement:

We will confirm that we have been in conversation with a few teams regarding the possibility of acquiring Jared Allen’s contractual rights. Any potential agreement would be contingent on the Chiefs receiving appropriate compensation and Jared’s representative reaching a contract agreement.

Jared is not an exclusive franchise player. Therefore, based on the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, he has the right to visit and negotiate with other teams. However, for any trade to be completed, the Chiefs would need to reach an agreement on compensation. At this point, all of these discussions are preliminary.

Udeze, the Vikings’ starting left end, won’t play in 2008 after being diagnosed with a form of leukemia this offseason. Erasmus James, a first-round pick in 2005, is question mark after battling knee injuries the past two seasons.

“It’s a situation that works out best for both sides,” Allen told the Fox website. “I can go to a team that is competing for a championship right now. The Chiefs can get valuable draft picks to rebuild with.”

The question becomes how much would the Vikings be willing to give up in a trade and how much would they want to pay Allen? There is no doubt the Chiefs will ask for Minnesota’s first-round pick in this month’s draft — the Vikings are set to select No. 17 overall. It’s been assumed the Vikings would target a defensive end in the draft such as Florida’s Derrick Harvey with that selection.

Update: ESPN is reporting the Vikings are considering offering their first- and second-round picks in 2009

Allen has had off-the-field issues; he was suspended the first two games because of multiple drunken driving convictions. Allen said in a February interview that he has quit drinking.

Vikings officials declined to comment on the Allen situation.

Udeze, who hasn’t spoken publicly since being diagnosed with leukemia in February, will discuss the need for bone marrow donors at Winter Park on Friday. The Vikings are playing host to metro-area soccer teams for what is being called the “Great American Soccer Marrowthon.” The 24 hours of soccer, which will feature local teams, will help support the Twin Cities-based National Marrow Donor Program.

Look at the Allen situation from this perspective…

Odds are, Derek Harvey (the guy the Vikes were rumored to be pursuing), very likely won’t make it to #17 since there are plenty of teams above us looking for DE’s. So, most likely we’d have to package one of our 3rds with the 1st and move up if we wanted to get him. We still have a player that has never played a down in the NFL and may end up a first rate flop. Whereas for a 1st and 3rd (or something similar), we could trade for Jared Allen, who is still young (4yrs in the league), and has proven himself to be one of the best pass rushers in the league. I’d say the choice is pretty easy.

ALLEN HEADING OUT OF KANSAS CITY?
Posted by Mike Florio on April 17, 2008, 12:52 p.m.
During the offseason, Jay Glazer of FOXSports has roughly the same profile as Punxsutawney Phil.

But when Glazer emerges from hibernation, he comes with something more than a hairy ass and tail.

Glazer reports that the Kansas City Chiefs are expected to trade defensive end Jared Allen before the draft. The two suitors are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Minnesota Vikings.

Allen, who bears the franchise tag, tells Glazer that he’ll visit with the Vikings this weekend in Minnesota, and that he plans to meet with the Bucs next week.

“It’s a situation that works out best for both sides,” Allen told Glazer. “I can go to a team that is competing for a championship right now. The Chiefs can get valuable draft picks to rebuild with.”

The deal will be driven by two things — compensation to the Chiefs, and a new deal for Allen. As to the former, the Chiefs surely will want at least a first-round pick. They probably will want even more, such as a third-rounder. Minnesota holds the No. 17 overall pick in round one, and Tampa has the No. 20 selection.

As to the latter, Allen might want the same six-year, $72 million package paid last year to Dwight Freeney by the Colts. The deal included $30 million in guaranteed money.

The Vikings know what Allen can do. He returned from a two-game suspension to face Minnesota in Week Three of the 2007 season, and Allen arguably was the reason the Chiefs won the game.

Speaking of suspensions, that’s the one issue that could hold down the trade package and/or the contract. Allen has had two DUI arrests in less than a year, and even though he has been clean the risk of a relapse will always be present.

The only potential glitch here is that G.M. Carl Peterson is known to drive a hard bargain. But the ceiling on the demands is two first-round draft picks, since any team could snag Allen, if they’re willing to ship two first-rounders to K.C.

Jared Allen says:

April 17th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

OK, since you seem like nice folks I’ll let you in on a lil secret. This whole Allen to the Vikes thing is a Smoke screen. As your coach is really looking to, under the radar, as he put it. trade your 1st & 3rd round picks for Tyler Thigpen.

Inferno Viking says:

A proven franchise player over a rookie with unknown NFL capabilities for the same price? Where’s Yolanda?…..

gr8scot says:

April 17th, 2008 at 12:28 pm

Maybe the Vikes can find a way to get the massive human swinging gate into the deal. The Chiefs need an LT and maybe “all the information” doesn’t travel any faster to KC than it does to Winter Park. If they do this deal, they’d better get an agreement on Allen’s contract done first - not something you want to do in the 10 minutes you’re “on-the-clock”.

BTW One would hope that with the amount of money that he gets, Allen would have a better taste in beer than any of the ones mentioned.

Chili Lover says:

I don’t like the idea of trading a 1st and 3rd round draft pick for much of anyone. Keep the picks, build a team that way. It works. Big free agent signings more often than not don’t pan out. And then we are stuck without current and/or future draft picks to boot…

OK, Bones - enough. You’re attracting imitators. You should be pleased with the Penguin 1st round.

I say offer a 1st and a 4th or 5th first, but be willing to go up to a 1st and 3rd. We have the advantage as it is vs TB (17th vs. 20th pick).

MOP of the Day Update:
5 responses thus far (taking Queen’s 9-0 for granted and Monc’s 1-8 response from yesterday, plus J’s 9-0, Jet’s 5-4, and my 6-3) we have an average of 6 Ws and 3 Ls, and thereby a 10-6 regular season record overall.

Lost Viking says:

According to John Clayton its #17 and a conditional 2nd next year.

‘the Bucs are reluctant to include more than a first-round pick for Allen. The Bucs have offered their first-round pick and a fifth-round pick next year, and their proposed deal could also include defensive lineman Jovan Haye, Smith reported.

Meanwhile Minnesota is considering offering its first-round pick and a second-round pick in 2009′

Bucky Scribner says:

April 17th, 2008 at 1:06 pm

If THAT is the case, our first this year and a second rounder NEXT year, then hell yes, trade for Allen….

Opinions??

Lost Viking says:

April 17th, 2008 at 1:18 pm

Would KC accept a third round in 2008. The 2nd round in 2009 - even if conditional - should be in the # 50 to # 60 range. That represents full value for Allen.

KC wants picks the Vikes have. OK to packaging a bunch of picks but no deal if it comes to #17 and a 2nd round

MudHenVikeFan says:

April 17th, 2008 at 1:20 pm

Talk of a 1st this year and a 2nd next makes me wonder if the Vikes still think they could get Rosenfels with a 3rd this year. If I weren’t so lazy I’d do a time value analysis of the draft trade chart to determine if a 2nd next year is worth more or less than a 3rd this year.

Inferno Viking says:

April 17th, 2008 at 1:30 pm

A lot of that depends on where we end up this season, although regardless of the non-humble opions of others and the abilities of Gus Fornot, the Vikes are done with the vet QB’s for the season.

They will draft a QB, but they are satisfied with who is in house now. (not my opion - just stating what it is)

Lost Viking says:

April 17th, 2008 at 1:31 pm

Mud,

NFL draft theory’s been a choice in this year’s round is equivalent to one in earlier round in following year. Depends on direction of a team as Giant draft pick next year will probably not be last.

Most teams optimistic that next year’s pick to be lower than this year’s. the 49er and Raider both made this mistake

Jared Allen says:

April 17th, 2008 at 1:31 pm

Enough about me, tell me something about yourselves.

Inferno Viking says:

April 17th, 2008 at 1:37 pm

A little clarification to my last post - where we end up in the draft order…..

Case in point is Cleveland last year trading with Dallas in order to move up and get Brady Quinn. Jerry Jones thought he was getting a top 5 or 10 pick when Cleveland mortgaged their 08 first rounder.

Little did he know……

Lost Viking says:

April 17th, 2008 at 1:37 pm

Inferno, would it be more correct to say the Vike ‘accept’ the QB situation rather than anybody being ’satisfied’

Texan are still without a 2nd pick and Rosenfels situation may not be resolved.

Lots of time left before training camp

“The season-opening game is always an exciting event, and now we’re very pleased to add the retirement of Brett’s No. 4 to that evening,” Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy said in a release. “It will make for an electric atmosphere at Lambeau Field, as well as a great opportunity for our fans around the country to share in it while watching the game on the national broadcast.”

If the offer of next year’s picks is true, it actually makes sense. I agree with what Disco was saying. In theory with the additions we’ve made and getting Allen, we should have a better record this coming season, which would make the draft picks that we give up next season lower. Also, it would still give us the #17 this year to get an OT (Otah, Williams). Then the rest of the draft, its BPA…

Trade for Allen is a no-brainer, assuming Zygi will pony up the cash (and I hope he will). Allen is a proven stud as a pass rushing end, and that’s exactly what we need. All the rookies are just that, rookies, and still need to prove themselves in the NFL game. Draft picks are never a sure thing, and barring any injury, Jared Allen would be the sure thing to shore up our pass rush (and subsequently help out our DBs). I’d offer whatever we can that is better than Tampa Bay to get this guy.

Let’s get the deal done. Given our luck drafting DE’s, it would be a much better idea to trade for a proven commodity. Allen’s got 43 career sacks in four seasons, and he only turned 26 this month.

What havoc could this guy wreak lined up with the Williams brothers? Good Jeff! If this goes through, I’m revising my picks for the season…

Keep the draft picks. Allen’s great, but this team has such a long way to go it isn’t worth it. Suspect QB, below average WRs (includes Berrian), terrible TE, suspect line (McKinnie, big baby Birk at Center). Build through the draft - the Vikes aren’t just around the corner for a Super Bowl birth. If they were 10-6 and won a playoff game last year, then they would be close to doing something like this. This move is like a year too early.

If I imagine the Vikes at the Packers on week 1 with J. Allen at DE, I have so much more confidence that our D would eat Rogers up. Jared Allen can come in right away and rip it up playing beside the Williams’.

we have to admit that a 1st and 3rd for a 4th year stud DE is better than a 2nd for an old J. Taylor.

Crap shoot it is, Vikings South, but ask the NYG how the draft helped them last year. There is one team in one year that did well. There are others. But, it’s a young man’s game, and when you have lots of holes to fill, keep drafting. Giants had a young QB who came into his own, 3 young stud RBs, young WRs to go with Plex; they didn’t miss a beat at TE when Shockey went down and Boss came in; 5 or 6 D-linement who rotated in, depleted CBs, but young players stepped in there, as well. It takes more than one stud DE. Still say the Vikes need way more players than they have right now to give away high draft picks just for J Allen, even though they saw first hand how dominate he can be last year.

Jared Allen says:

April 17th, 2008 at 4:20 pm

zeke or torgo or whoever you are. If the Vikes give up TWO draft picks for ONE player (JA) they only lose ONE player .. Not a big deal to get the LEADING SACKER in the NFL last year. Moron.

So the two players they give up is not a risk…

Maybe the only risk is that he is not reshaped by the culture of accountability, does something stupid again, and gets a big suspension.

Can’t they pay someone like 100K a year to make sure that doesn’t happen?

Take A Risk says:

April 17th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Remember, you can replace most 2nd-, 3rd-, 4th-, etc. rounders in free agency without that much difficulty if you have the cap space. So, it is not like you are giving up a second player that you could never replace.

“What is Kevin and Pat’s contracts, in respect to total years, signing bonus, per-year payments, and where they are in progress.”

Are the two pro-bowlers going to be dwarfed by a $70 million contract with a $30 million signing bonus by a 4-year guy?

What if the Vikings make a 7 years, $65 million contract with a $32 million signing bonus to Allen?

How will that play with the Williams’ brothers?????

Will they see it as a great part of their goal of going to the SB? (see Steelers, Cowboys, Vikings, Rams, Bears, etc.)

Or will they see that as a “dis” on them?

Question. Draft picks are being thrown out for Allen, but what about players? I like Allen and would like to see hime play for the Vikes, but he has some league problems with his 2 DUI’s. Next offense could mean a couple of suspensions, so there is a risk. There’s a player that the Vikes have that also has some league problems and plays a position that KC needs, LT McKinnie. Maybe a 3rd round pick involved also, maybe not. What’s the possibilities of this happening?
