Another visit

March 27th, 2008 – 11:06 AM by Judd Zulgad

And the list continues to grow.

Dre Moore, a 6-4, 305-pound defensive tackle from Maryland, will visit the Vikings on April 9-10, according to Scout.com. During that same time period, former Notre Dame defensive tackle Trevor Laws also is scheduled to be at Winter Park. Moore led Maryland with six sacks last season and led the team with 63 tackles.

The Vikings are allowed to bring in 30 prospects before the April 26-27 draft. Here is the updated (and partial) list of players expected to be in Minnesota:

– DT Kentwan Balmer, North Carolina

– QB Brian Brohm, Louisville

– QB Joe Flacco, Delaware

– WR Malcolm Kelly, Oklahoma

– DE Kendall Langford, Hampton

– DT Trevor Laws, Notre Dame

– DT Dre Moore, Maryland

– WR Devin Thomas, Michigan State

Meanwhile, there is some sad news today involving a player who had been expected to be taken in the draft. Heath Benedict, an offensive lineman from Newberry College in South Carolina, was found dead at his home in Jacksonville, Fla. Here is the story.

Afternoon update: Scout.com reports that Langford was in town today for his visit and that the Vikings also were supposed to meet with Louisville wide receiver Mario Urrutia.

I guess the worst players in my opinion are the ones that get cut. Deandre Island? I don’t think he ever made the roster.

MudHenVikeFan says:

March 27th, 2008 at 11:10 am

What’s with bringing in 3 DTs and only 1 DE? I realize they may specifically avoid bringing in potential 1st round picks so as not to show their hand, but this seems skewed. Perhaps these are DTs that are also DE prospects?

Judd Zulgad says:

March 27th, 2008 at 11:14 am

MudHen,

That list is only partial so there might be other defensive ends coming in.

Judd - is the list partial because they haven’t decided on the others yet, or you just haven’t been able to get the names? If the former, my question still stands…why the early focus on DT? If the latter…get to work! :D

Don’t forget Mr. Marshall’s wrong-way run with a fumble. Got us on some highlight films in our purple pants and white jerseys.

What about Bobby Bryant’s block of a Ram FG attempt in the playoffs, took it back all the way for a TD?

Cunningham’s smile to Moss just before the snap and a bomb for a TD vs. Dallas?

Puckett’s homer in the 11th vs. the Braves? (Sorry)

Torgo says:

March 27th, 2008 at 11:26 am

Bringing players in for interviews is all smoke and mirrors. I believe they will go defensive end in the first.

2Minute Tommy says:

March 27th, 2008 at 11:33 am

MOP:

1976 NFC Championship - The Game of blocked kicks - Nate Allen’s blocked FG and Bobby Bryant’s return for 90 yards and a TD (who said Bobby was slow?), Matt Blairs recovery of a blocked punt that led to a FG and a Viking 10-0 halftime lead. Bryant intercepted 2 passes that game as well.

2Minute Tommy says:

March 27th, 2008 at 11:36 am

The Vikings need to take a look at Red Bryant, DT from Texas. 6′4″ 318lbs:

B. Grant says:

March 27th, 2008 at 11:38 am

Tommy, as I recall that game started with the Rams taking the opening drive down the field relatively easy before stalling for the FG attempt, which BB blocked and returned. Went from looking like down 0-7 to up 7-0. Is that the right game?

Torgo says:

March 27th, 2008 at 11:40 am

2Minute– Your thinking replacement for Fat Pat?

2Minute Tommy says:

March 27th, 2008 at 11:41 am

That’s right Coach, and the Vikings never looked back after that. The Vikings went up 17-0 before the LA Rams scored 13 points in the 3rd quarter, the Vikings sealed the deal when Sammy Johnson scored in the 4th qtr.

2Minute Tommy says:

March 27th, 2008 at 11:43 am

Torgo - THey need to think about it either this year or next. And Pat needs a breather every once in a while. You’d think he wouldn’t get winded as easy having having all those ladie friends.

Torgo says:

March 27th, 2008 at 11:46 am

Theres a poll on espn where the fans get to pick who the teams will draft and the fans selected some wide receiver for the Vikings. The expert who gave his take thought it was a stupid pick becuase they need a defensive end worse.

some idiot on one of the “mock” drafts showed us taking a LB in the 1st round. That would make about as much sense as us drafting Mendenhal or McFadden…

Torgo says:

March 27th, 2008 at 11:59 am

That was weird.

FargoVikesFan says:

March 27th, 2008 at 12:01 pm

wisvike says:

Torgo says:

March 27th, 2008 at 12:02 pm

I think Greenway will have a monster year this year.

MudHenVikeFan says:

March 27th, 2008 at 12:04 pm

Fargo - I’d say less…at least McFadden or Mendenhall would be bargains at #17 and would have value in a trade (or freeing up Chester to be traded). Is there more than 1 LB that ranks in the top 20?

AFVikeHawaii says:

March 27th, 2008 at 12:09 pm

Dan Conner is going to be a beast for whoever is smart enough to draft him

FargoVikesFan says:

March 27th, 2008 at 12:11 pm

Mendenhal actually might still be there at 17, McFadden will go in the top 5 or 6 somewhere.

2Minute Tommy says:

For any of you who are in DT Minneapolis, Dave Osborne and Mick Tingelhoff are in the Qwest Building, Skyway level autographing the book, A Tradition of Purple. I was lucky enough to have a couple minutes with the 2 Vikings Legends talking about their careers. Good Stuff!!

FargoVikesFan says:

A state Senate committee has served up a stadium appetizer for the Minnesota Vikings amid clear signs the team will be back for the main course in 2009.

An amendment to a bigger tax plan authorizes the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission to proceed on a $2 million study of design, site and financing options of a new stadium complex.

The team and the commission would split the cost.

The study must be done by early 2009. Vikings vice president Lester Bagley says the move puts the stadium discussion on the table for next year’s Legislature.

Senator John Marty of Roseville tried to derail the proposal, saying it presumes public money is needed for a new football stadium.

The Vikings are under lease at the Metrodome through 2011. The team has struggled to gain support for a new $954 million stadium.

Tommy, I’m curious now. My sources don’t show Sammy Johnson scoring a TD that year, and I thought the stats included post season, but maybe not. I don’t remember much after htat opening sequence.

The Rams QB was James Harris, just a little better than TJax, as I recall. Threw more int’s than TD’s. We stonewalled them pretty good after that opening drive.

Meeting.

wisvike says:

2Minute Tommy says:

March 27th, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Coach - You must be thinking of a different game? The 1976 NFC Championship game, the Rams starting QB was Pat Haden. Haden was the 3rd string QB until week 5 when Harris and Jaworski were injured. Maybe it was McClanahan that scored that TD?

2Minute Tommy says:

March 27th, 2008 at 1:12 pm

I’m currently reading “A Tradition of Purple”. It’s a pretty sappy accounting of Viking history. The good times read well but it completely ignores any rough times. It makes the Herschel Walker trade sound like a great trade that just didn’t quite work out. And the 4 Superbowl losses are just a blip on the screen of great seasons. Only real die hard Viking fans will enjoy it.

NFL ADOPTING MADDEN KICKOFF RULE?
Posted by Mike Florio

One of the things that has always bugged me about the Madden video game is that it incorrectly uses the college rule regarding the coin toss.

Put simply, the NFL rule is that the team that wins the toss gets to choose whether to kickoff or receive. The team that loses the toss gets to make that decision at the start of the third quarter.

There is no ability at the NFL level to defer the decision to kick or to receive until the third quarter. If the team that wins the toss chooses to kick to start the game, the team that loses the toss then can choose to receive to start the third quarter.

Madden has had the rule wrong from its inception. But now, Madden could end up being right. But only because the owners might adopt the Madden version of the rule.

The proposal is mentioned in an item from Mark Curnutte of the Cincinnati Enquirer, in which many of the various proposals are identified.

Now, we’ll sit back and wait for all the comments to be posted insisting that NFL teams currently have the ability to defer the decision as to whether to receive the kickoff until the second half.

Didn’t Denny Green, in a game in Chicago, elect to kickoff to open the game after winning the toss? It was windy so he wanted to pick the wind rather than get the ball. Only Denny! It’s a good rule I guess, but I don’t know if it will make much of a difference. One team gets the ball first, one gets the ball first coming back after the half. Sounds equal.

Vikings South says:

I doubt the Vikings brass would give up as much as a 3rd-rounder for Jared Allen. Oh, sure, he had 15.5 sacks last year and is only 25, but he has had some legal issues (”Allen has been arrested/charged for driving under the influence a total of 3 times within 4 years” — Wikipedia), and the Vikings under Chili and Zygi put character first. (Unless it’s the left tackle.)

Two more nuggets from Wikipedia:

* “Jared credited his early 2007 season success to his mullet.”

* “His father, Ron was once on the training camp roster of the Minnesota Vikings.”

Don’t know if Moc beat me to this (or if, as the last time I did a cut-and-paste, Monc was doing it simultaneously), but this was an interesting scenario from SI’s Don Banks:

• If the Chiefs do wind up taking Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan at No. 5 — and I’m starting to get the sense that’s a very real possibility if the No. 3 Falcons pass on him, as it appears they will in favor of LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey — it probably means that veteran Damon Huard will be released or traded. Kansas City coach Herm Edwards said this week that he wouldn’t nix the idea of going into the season with a rookie quarterback, in addition to third-year veteran Brodie Croyle and second-year man Tyler Thigpen.

If he gets to the market, Huard would be a potential fit in Green Bay, which is searching for a veteran backup as insurance behind first-time starter Aaron Rodgers, or Minnesota, which continues to explore options in addition to Tarvaris Jackson.

As is well known, the Vikings currently call the Metrodome their home turf, and it is one of the worst facilities in the NFL.

The Minnesota State Senate Taxes Committee recently opened Pandora’s Box, however, and OK’d a $2 million study on how to replace the Metrodome.

It’s the biggest step stadium talks have taken since the Vikings pulled the rug out from under Anoka County back in 2006.

Minnesota had an agreement with the Anoka County Commission to build a retractable roof-covered stadium near Blaine, Minn., but scrapped the roof when legislators balked at the price tag.

As a result, the county was miffed, and broke off all ties with the franchise.

Most stadium talk now has revolved around replacing or retrofitting the dome, with the Wilf family - the Vikings’ owners - even purchasing property near the dome.

Whatever happens, it has to happen fast. Minnesota’s lease with the dome is over in just three years.

Meanwhile, the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Twins will move into their own new stadiums over the next two years.

Monctonvike says:

March 27th, 2008 at 5:27 pm

3/27/2008
1 A five-game winning streak late last season, an active free agency period that has included the signings of impact players WR Bernard Berrian and S Madieu Williams, and an ever-growing interest surrounding the NFL Draft has the Minnesota Vikings and their fans excited for the upcoming 2008 season.

The addition of core players through free agency and the draft coupled with the retention of key veterans gives the team a solid foundation for future success.

As committed as the Vikings are to bringing a Super Bowl championship to the fans and the state, the franchise is equally devoted to securing a long-term home for the team in Minnesota. The Vikings remain one of the few NFL franchises without a stadium solution, but the team is determined to collaborate with the State Legislature, the Governor and local leaders to resolve this issue.

Working with the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission (MSFC), the Vikings are moving forward on a public-private partnership that will open a new multi-purpose stadium on the current Metrodome site in the year 2012.

This economic development proposal includes three critical elements that go beyond hosting Vikings home games:

A retractable-roof stadium that will give Minnesotans a state-of-the-art venue to be used year-round for high school and amateur sports, trade shows, community and cultural events, as well as national and international happenings.
A Winter Garden light rail train station that will serve as a connecting point for the future Central Corridor light rail line and the existing Hiawatha line. This gathering place is integral to the Vikings vision of the overall development and will host indoor/outdoor activities for transit riders, neighborhood residents, downtown workers and stadium attendees.
A privately financed redevelopment of the Downtown East area that will include office buildings, residences, shops and restaurants. This exciting project will create jobs, boost the economy and bring a renewed energy to this area of Minneapolis.

“The Metrodome site makes great sense for a new stadium because most of the necessary infrastructure is already in place,” Vikings Owner/Chairman Zygi Wilf said. “While Minneapolis is the proposed location for this stadium, the facility will be a statewide asset used for events that student-athletes and fans from across Minnesota will attend and benefit from.”

In order to allow Minnesotans an opportunity to hear details on the stadium development proposal and give them a chance to provide necessary feedback, the MSFC spent the last several months conducting a “Listening Tour” throughout the state. Members of the Commission emphasized the urgency in which Minnesota must act due to cost inflation and the Vikings Metrodome lease expiring in 2011. They also underscored that the state of Minnesota benefits from a year-round facility that hosts many types of events with significant economic benefits for our region. The MSFC received positive feedback regarding a new facility throughout the tour and is now in the process of completing a report to the Legislature on the findings.

An improving football team, a detailed stadium plan and leadership from the MSFC are all contributing to the stadium issue moving forward; nonetheless, given the feedback the Vikings have received from state leaders, it is clear a stadium decision will not be reached in 2008. Instead, the Governor and Legislative Leadership told NFL executives visiting Minnesota that 2009 is the year to resolve this issue. The Vikings will work with these state leaders to ensure the project stays on this timeline.

“With rising construction costs and our Metrodome lease set to expire in 2011, it is critical to remain on the 2012 timeline to open a new stadium,” said Wilf. “Financing a stadium in the spring of 2009 keeps us on that 2012 timeline and prevents considerable cost inflation.”

Much work remains between now and the 2009 legislative session, and the franchise is reaching out to its fans to help re-energize Minnesota Momentum, a grassroots coalition comprised of Vikings fans, NFL fans and Minnesotans from all walks of life who believe in a timely resolution to the team’s stadium issue. Click here to find out how you can join and help on the effort.

In the meantime, the Vikings continue to push forward during the offseason to add key pieces to the roster. These pieces, along with the dedication of a talented coaching staff, have the team on the rise, with a commitment to bringing a world championship to Vikings fans.

You asked what the MOP is today. It was greatest play or something. One that will ALWAYS stick in my mind (and they replay it ALL the time) is when that Kansas City guy grabbed a pass and turned and ran it in for a TD. That was in Super Bowl One (for us). Than that snotty Hank Stram turned and yukked it up. It took 30 years for me to forgive him for rubbing it in. Remember?

I think the receiver’s name was Otis Campbell.

40for60 says:

March 27th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

Otis Taylor? That wasn’t Sharockman that missed that tackle was it??? LOL

I think the first one that comes to mind for me…..I think it was from ‘99 at Denver. We had third and 35+ on our side of the field. I can’t remember if J. George passed or handed off to Leroy Hoard, but somehow he was able to get the first down. That game was back and forth….I remember Cris Carter made an unbelievable catch.

Maybe the catch by Rashad in the playoff game against Cleveland in the ‘80 playoffs. How about Darrin Nelson breaking through for a score against Dallas in OT in 1987?

Maybe we should just make a top ten list….

kennyrogers says:

March 27th, 2008 at 7:55 pm

You are 100% percent correct, it was Otis Taylor. Otis Campbell was the town drunk of Mayberry on Andy Griffith Show. Another repressed childhood memory. Maybe I have “issues”!

One more that comes to mind is Cris Carter’s circus catch against the Dolphins in ‘94.

kennyrogers says:

March 27th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

1)The catch (Rashad’s)
2)The kick (Gary Anderson’s)
3)The moon (Green Bay game)
4)Wrong way (Jim Marshall)
5)The scramble (Tarkenton–pick one)
6)The whiskey bottle (Pearson hail mary)
7)Kapp’s knockout (against Brown’s LB)
8)Two Minute Tommy’s convulsions
9)Adrian Peterson
10)Adrian Peterson

40for60 says:

March 27th, 2008 at 8:44 pm

I’ll add:

Foreman breaking off the long run against the Rams in the ‘76 NFC Championship.

The HEAVE by Tarkenton to Gilliam in the ‘73 NFC Championship at Dallas.

Randy Moss punt return for TD against the Chiefs.

THE HIT…….I can’t remember who it was, but it was against the Packers in December ‘96. Dewayne Washington maybe?

Jim Marshall Fumble return/pitch to Alan Page for a TD against the Lions in ‘69.

Walker Lee Ashley return for a TD against Bears on a Monday night. (’89?)

Joey Browner breaking Willhite’s leg against Denver (ouch!)

Anthony Carter making a SWEET catch for a TD against San Franciso in ‘87 playoffs….

Any more?

kennyrogers says:

March 27th, 2008 at 8:49 pm

Watching 49′ers hightlights right now. They must have a had a quarterback who ran a long ways against the Vikes. No big deal, I guess. Ho hum.

40for60 says:

March 27th, 2008 at 9:03 pm

Maybe, but the look on Joe Montana’s face when Reggie Rutland picked him off for 6 was PRICELESS. Unfortunately, Steve Young may have been even better than Montana.

One of my fave Tommy Kramer moments is in the closing minutes at Dallas in ‘88. We are leading 43-3; Doleman and Millard are KILLING Dallas QB Kevin Sweeney and all the breaks are going our way. With under a minute left, Kramer launches a long pass down the sidelines. ESPN got a close-up of his face in between plays; he was laughing it up and having a good time. Unfortunately, Jim Jeffcoat didn’t see the humor and went after Kramer when the game ended….which turned into a pretty good rugby scrum. Kramer was one cocky SOB…and I guess that is why I liked him. Kapp, Tark and Kramer were all salty dogs…..

There’s a pretty good chance Harvey won’t be there, however. He could go as high as No. 7 to the Patriots. True pass rushers like Harvey probably won’t be around long after the Giants’ Super Bowl performance.

No one has shown any interest in Culpepper. King, if your weekend includes ice fishing… well …. maybe not.

“At one point cameras showed the suspect tossing two money bags from a silver Toyota sedan as it sped down I-494.”

the article never stated if the 2 bags were retrieved.

….Buster? ;-)

B. Grant says:

That’s a good call. Think its time to get the boat home and ready. Can I retire my snow removal equipment too?

2Minute Tommy says:

NO DAUNTE RETURN IN OAKLAND?
Posted by Mike Florio on March 28, 2008, 8:03 a.m.
As quarterback Daunte Culpepper waits for the phone to do something other than sit there and stare at him, his chances of returning to the Raiders apparently are shrinking.

The Raiders recently have signed quarterbacks Erik Meyer and Jeff Otis, giving them four arms on the roster as offseason camps approach.

Four is the magic number for most teams when it comes to training camps and the preseason. Then again, neither Meyer nor Otis have played in a regular-season game. So it’s possible that they’ll be competing against each other in the short term, and that one of them will get the boot before too long.

Though Culpepper still shows up on the team’s official online roster, the transactions page on the Raiders’ web site makes it clear that Culpepper, who played under a one-year deal in 2007, has not be re-signed.

No one has shown any interest in Culpepper. In fact, the only time his name has been mentioned came on the first weekend of free agency, when the Randy Moss camp, in an obvious effort to put pressure on the Patriots, leaked that Moss had reached out to Culpepper about possibly reuniting

BUSTER RHYMES says:

March 28th, 2008 at 11:07 am

Judd & Kevin are too busy playing Chutes & Ladders with Chilli & Speilman….

FIRE CHILDRESS NOW !!!!!!!!!

KingKC uhda TC says:

March 28th, 2008 at 11:08 am

I’d throw it to T-Jump because it isn’t his fault Chili threw him in the lake.

B. Grant says:

March 28th, 2008 at 11:10 am

Clarification…
Am I in the water and needing a life jacket also?

BUSTER RHYMES says:

March 28th, 2008 at 11:12 am

No, B.G but it is possible you could be pushed errr fall in… :)

FIRE CHILDRESS NOW !!!!!!!!!

B. Grant says:

March 28th, 2008 at 11:13 am

First, I would make sure that Adrian Peterson isn’t going to need a life jacket.

Vikings South says:

March 28th, 2008 at 11:14 am

T-Jack. He has his whole life ahead of him. And he may still grow into the job. (Ask me again next year.)

As for Chili, since he’s lost his hair, he really has nothing to live for anyway.

B. Grant says:

March 28th, 2008 at 11:17 am

Wait… I forgot. I can walk on water. Never mind.

BUSTER RHYMES says:

March 28th, 2008 at 11:24 am

Yea B.G, well I can drink water, so there…

FIRE CHILDRESS NOW !!!!!!!!!

Vikings South says:

March 28th, 2008 at 11:28 am

Buster, you’d drink water that Chili had been soaking in? You’re a braver man than I.

4Ever Viking says:

March 28th, 2008 at 11:29 am

Count linebacker Ben Leber among the Vikings players who were impressed by the team’s decision to be aggressive in free agency and sign receiver Bernard Berrian and safety Madieu Williams.

“It was great,” Leber said. “I think it shows the public and it shows the players that they are willing to go out and get the missing pieces. Get some pieces that we need to make us better. We’re excited that the people upstairs, they are putting the message out: ‘This is going to be a great year for us and we’re going to add some key pieces.’ And that’s what they did.”

B. Grant says:

March 28th, 2008 at 11:37 am

Oh, and Ben, does your excitement include the absence of TWill? Yeah, I thought that is what you meant.

RandomThoughtsGuy says:

March 28th, 2008 at 11:59 am
