Rosenfels talks end?

February 28th, 2008 – 8:04 PM by Judd Zulgad

Word out of Houston is the Vikings and Texans have ended talks regarding a trade that would have landed quarterback Sage Rosenfels in purple for a third-round pick. It sounds as if the Vikings have spent much of the day exploring the possibility of adding a quarterback through a trade instead of signing one in free agency.

Remember, the team released Kelly Holcomb on Wednesday, leaving the Vikings with Tarvaris Jackson and Brooks Bollinger.

Another name that has come up as a trade possibility for the Vikings is J.P. Losman of the Buffalo Bills. Here’s the skinny on Losman.

Let’s get Henne or I like the raw potential of Joe Flacco. Perhaps we can get Tyler Thigpen back.

What does everyone think of Issac Bruce being a pickup for the Vikes?

FargoVikesFan says:

February 28th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Swamp, from previous…

Berrian had more catches last season than T-Will had his entire career, and more than the top two receivers on our team COMBINED… And thats with Grossmann, Griese, and Orton throwing to him

Ole says:

Judd, Thanks!!!!!!

Seifert = slacker

Doubt if I. Bruce would come to Minnesota
Bet he ends up with the Redskins

Good post on last blog, Swampie.

But we’re not going to get Rosenfels for a third alone. Texan are looking for 2nd and our side probably leaked the info to SI.

Taking once step back in the first round ie. a swap of #17 for #18 is relatively painless. Packaging Marcus Johson or Garrett Mills if Texan would go for that.

Guess Vike won’t part with the 2nd pick

FargoVikesFan says:

February 28th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Even if we pick up a QB, I still think we need to look at drafting one. Henne maybe, possibly J.D. Booty, Colt Brennan, someone of that nature in the later rounds…

matty927 says:

does anybody care what da Bears are going to do at wide receiver this year? i mean, they let Muhammed go and now Berrian is on his way out via free agency…man, I feel for Tubby and those guys…

Just for Ole sake’s, it should be Colt.

matty927 says:

colt is who Ole would like us to draft at some point…although I’m sure we probably could grab him as a rookie free agent.

Vike-N-The-Swamp says:

Yeah I understand that but also different offensive weapons/strategy.

Bears pass attemps for team 567 for 3692.

Per PFT if not already read:

SAGE TALKS END

Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that talks between the Vikings and the Texans regarding a trade that would have sent quarterback Sage Rosenfels from Houston to Minnesota have ended.

The Vikings offered a third-round pick; the Texans wanted a second-round pick.

The Vikes could now pursue J.P. Losman, who has asked to be traded out of Buffalo.

FargoVikesFan says:

February 28th, 2008 at 8:25 pm

I guess Colt was really sharp throwing the ball during the combine, if that means anything.

Ole, we’ve got 2 6th rounders, maybe one for Colt. It was rumored that Chili had shown considerable interest in him at the Senior Bowl

Brad Childress will not be bringing in a legitimate quarterback. The stubborn S.O.B. is bound and determined to put the square peg in the round hole and roll with Pop-Tart Jackson as his quarterback. And you certainly can’t have a mentor-type veteran on the roster who might give advice to #7 (that right is reserved for Herr Chili).

VILMA TO SAINTS?

The Lions kicked the tires on Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma, and were regarded as the favorites to land the 12th player selected in the 2004 draft.

But the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that the Saints are close to swinging a deal for Vilma.

Vilma’s 2007 season was shortened by knee problems, and he hasn’t been a good fit for the 3-4 defense.

Vike-N-The-Swamp says:

February 28th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

Turner more than likely ends up with a team like the Bears, Falcons, and possibly the Dolphins are showing interest now also.

Jones I’m really not sure of.

Wonder if perhaps the Vikes will go after Lorenzo Neal to be the FB replacement.

2Minute Tommy says:

February 28th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

MHVF - so basically bribe these players to come to Minnesota and hope that T-Jax can throw more than screen and crossing patterns.

FargoVikesFan says:

February 28th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

One guy (if he’s in the draft, I’m not sure) that might be worth a look in the late rounds is Sam Houston State QB Rhett Bomar. He was a great prospect and started for Oklahoma as a freshman. However, he was dismissed from the school because of “over compensation” for a job he had at a local car dealership.

I watched him play against NDSU this past season, and he accounted for all but 35 yards of the total offense in the game (of around 380 yards). One of the more impressive college QB’s I’ve ever seen play…

He had a good game against the Vikes last time he played us. Don’t think he will like collecting splinters here. And he would probably land the starting job. I just don’t see it happening.

2Minute Tommy says:

Will Berrian have Vince Young or T-Jax as his next QB?

Scout.com’s Adam Caplan reports the “bidding war” will be between the Vikings and Titans for Bernard Berrian when free agency begins.

Caplan calls the 49ers the “wild card” in all this. If Berrian wants to put up the best numbers he can, San Francisco is his best bet. However, agent Drew Rosenhaus is probably telling him to go for the most money. If the Vikings lose out, Jerry Porter is expected to be their secondary target.

In many ways I would almost prefer Porter to Berrian

I think Berrian has more speed but has also struggled with drops. Sound familiar? T-jack isn’t always known for putting the pass right on the money either. Then again he made those crappy QB’s chi town look good at times

Porter is getting older and like Berrian is experianced in making lower end QB’s look good. I think he has great Hands I would hope his attitude to clash with coach Kremlin

Here’s the bottom line for the Bears’ attempt to re-sign wide receiver Bernard Berrian: Their most recent offer — $8 million in bonus money in a five-year, $25 million package — wasn’t enough to get a deal done. Free agency begins at 11 tonight, and Berrian is seeking a payday well in excess of that — $24.5 million in the first three years of a contract — though general manager Jerry Angelo last week called the Bears’ offers to Berrian and linebacker Lance Briggs ‘’aggressive.'’ It’s unknown how much room the Bears have to improve that offer for Berrian, who is expected to be courted by the Minnesota Vikings. It’s also unclear whether Berrian and agent Drew Rosenhaus will be able to get another team — the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers also are thought to be interested — to meet his asking price, which probably would require a signing bonus of more than $12 million. — Chicago Sun-Times

PACKERS, BROWNS MAKE A DEAL

Vike-N-The-Swamp says:

February 28th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

FVF…just read that a few minutes ago on PFT…wonder if there is any possible dealings going on that would possible include some type of trade w/ multiple players/draft picks and perhaps Derek Anderson in lieu of Favre retirement.

Though with success that DA had w/ Browns I’m not sure if that would be to their advantage.

2Minute Tommy says:

February 28th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

FVF - Here’s a little more on that trade proposal:

Citing “sources,” the Washington Post reports the Browns will acquire franchise player Corey Williams from the Packers at midnight tonight.

Green Bay wants a second-round pick in exchange for Williams. If this report proves true, Packers GM Ted Thompson will look brilliant. By franchising Williams and putting him on the block, Thompson will have nabbed a day one pick for a player he originally appeared all but certain to lose. Feb. 28 - 9:05 pm et

especially since they are now going into the playoffs with two rookies at Goalie

Huet was gone next year anways, but if Price had a tough go in the playoffs they would have had Huet. As well if Montreal made a good run he would have gotten paid more in FA next year. I think Montreal and Huet both loseout on that one. ( Take hied Spielman no stoopid crap like that)

Now he has to win the division for the washington crapitals to make the playoffs because that is the worst division in the NHL

akvikesfan says:

February 28th, 2008 at 9:08 pm

I like that they’re trying to trade for a QB… kind of. If we can give up a draft pick for a QB like Losman then it provides us the opportunity to give him a test drive BEFORE signing him for the long term. The free agent QB’s out there not only will cost more money, but are long term commitments…

So a guy like Collins might be good, but he’ll probably demand more than he’s worth. A trade at this position makes sense for us.

Knee injury, likely a ligament sprain. I’m sure they won’t have an official return date until they do the MRI, but early guesses are at least a week.

Crosby has been skating at full speed and his return is expected in a week to ten days.

Berrian want sto finally get made. He’ll go to the highest bidder. The Andre Davis deal (wish it was us) set a high bar, and he’ll be looking for more cash than he’s worth. But… I don’t want another year of Wade being our leading reciever.

Here’s the new from Seahawgs:

Seahawg continue to say they are keeping Shaun Alexander and will not have to restructure the contract.

The Seahawks have given fullback Leonard Weaver a $1.47 million restricted free agent tender.

The level of the tender gives the Seahawks the option to match any offer sheet Weaver might sign with another team after free agency begins tonight or receive a second-round draft choice as compensation for losing him.

Weaver made the team as an undrafted free agent in 2005.

Josh Brown, kicker is available as a FA
Microsoft has admitted it knew Vista was crud before it was released, and

Running back Alvin Pearman, the team’s only other restricted free agent, was not tendered an offer. He continues rehab the knee injury that ended his season.

Still worth a fourth (maybe a 3rd????) rounder, Kenny.

ASANTE TO PHILLY?

Two years ago, there were reports that center LeCharles Bentley would sign with the Eagles on the first day of free agency.

He didn’t.

The rumor was that Bentley had reneged on a verbal deal that had been brokered in advance of the start of free agency, and signed instead with the Browns.

This time around, there are Internet reports from the generally plugged-in gcobb.com that Pats cornerback Asante Samuel has a deal in place to sign with Philly. If true, Samuel can renege without consequence, just like Bentley did. And the Eagles would have no recourse, just as in the Bentley situation.

An unwritten player contract negotiated at a time when there should be negotiations at all is, obviously, not enforceable.

Other teams thought to be interested in Samuel are the Saints, Jets, and possible the Bucs. Samuel is believed to want a contract worth at least $10 million per year.

Vike-N-The-Swamp says:

February 28th, 2008 at 9:35 pm

Still don’t think that the Bucs are the right fit for Samuel as Tampa 2 doesn’t necessarily need his skills. Saints or Jets would probably be the best option for him.

Now, back to hockey posts.

Monctonvike says:

what if we end signing two wr’s like just as an example : Porter/Booker

Or Stallworth/Berrian

we seem to be able to afford it. Don’t get caught in the examples they are just that

akvikesfan says:

February 28th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

With $44 million to spend, he makes perfect sense for the Bucs. They could front load his contract for 2008, drive up the price that Oakland and the Seahawks would have to pay for their franchise players. The Seahawks would have to make some adjustments to afford Trufant, and that could result in cuts, which could weaken one of the Bucs biggest Conference contenders. Weaken another team, and seriously improve your team, all with one years worth of financial devestation? Makes sense to me.

Monctonvike says:

Maybe the Vikings will sign a Hockey player

Bones says:

February 28th, 2008 at 9:42 pm

There just isn’t a whole lot out there this year. And on top of all their other needs the team really needs to do something with the left tackle position as you can expect McKinnie to receive some sort of suspension (personally, I would like to see him given the pink slip). I guess the one wide receiver that would get my attention would be Stallworth, but I don’t see that happening. Say what you want about me being negative, but I simply have a really hard time getting excited about this team outside of #28…

Twins signed a couple of hockey players.
One third baseman and one first baseman.
The first baseman was league MVP two years ago. You’re either on to something or on something!!!

Vike-N-The-Swamp says:

afvike…I’m saying that Samuels type of play doesn’t fit the Tampa 2 style of defense. Yeah it might make sense financially, weakening of conference opponents, etc. Samuels style for football IMO does not fit the Tampa 2 defense, therefore I think he doesn’t make sense in Tampa.

[…] “Word out of Houston” is that the Texans and Vikes have broken off trade talks, which would send Houston a pick for Sage Rosenfels. I can’t even begin to tell you how disappointed that makes me. Sage for anything would kick ass. The sad fact is that, with Sage at the helm, I don’t think we are a playoff capable team. He’s a backup. He had a career year. It’s called trading high. Take a 3rd and 4th or 5th for him, and be happy. […]
