Word out of Houston is the Vikings and Texans have ended talks regarding a trade that would have landed quarterback Sage Rosenfels in purple for a third-round pick. It sounds as if the Vikings have spent much of the day exploring the possibility of adding a quarterback through a trade instead of signing one in free agency.
Remember, the team released Kelly Holcomb on Wednesday, leaving the Vikings with Tarvaris Jackson and Brooks Bollinger.
Another name that has come up as a trade possibility for the Vikings is J.P. Losman of the Buffalo Bills. Here’s the skinny on Losman.
Â
oh sure Judd, get us all worked up about someone, then yank the rug out from under us…
oh, and 1st…
so, since the talks have ended, does that mean a deal has been made?
Please do not give up a draft pick for a career back up QB. PLEASE!!!!
Let’s get Henne or I like the raw potential of Joe Flacco. Perhaps we can get Tyler Thigpen back.
What does everyone think of Issac Bruce being a pickup for the Vikes?
Swamp, from previous…
Berrian had more catches last season than T-Will had his entire career, and more than the top two receivers on our team COMBINED… And thats with Grossmann, Griese, and Orton throwing to him
Judd, Thanks!!!!!!
Seifert = slacker
Doubt if I. Bruce would come to Minnesota
Bet he ends up with the Redskins
Good post on last blog, Swampie.
But we’re not going to get Rosenfels for a third alone. Texan are looking for 2nd and our side probably leaked the info to SI.
Taking once step back in the first round ie. a swap of #17 for #18 is relatively painless. Packaging Marcus Johson or Garrett Mills if Texan would go for that.
Guess Vike won’t part with the 2nd pick
Even if we pick up a QB, I still think we need to look at drafting one. Henne maybe, possibly J.D. Booty, Colt Brennan, someone of that nature in the later rounds…
does anybody care what da Bears are going to do at wide receiver this year? i mean, they let Muhammed go and now Berrian is on his way out via free agency…man, I feel for Tubby and those guys…
2hrs and 52 mins? Oh yeah. it’s almost time!
How could you go wrong with a name like Colt Brennan at QB…
And if we draft a QB again this year, let’s keep him…
Just for Ole sake’s, it should be Colt.
See you all in a few hours.
yup
colt is who Ole would like us to draft at some point…although I’m sure we probably could grab him as a rookie free agent.
Yeah I understand that but also different offensive weapons/strategy.
Bears pass attemps for team 567 for 3692.
Vikes pass attempts for team 427 for 2817.
TAR…that’s too funny
Colt goes in the sixth round is what “they” are saying
I think the Vikings are going to have the same problem this season as they did last season trying to convinvce a quality WR to come here with the QB’s on the roster.
Fargo - agree…pick up a vet that could step in if necessary this year, draft a prospect round 3 or later, and dump Bollinger.
Could he be a brady sleeper?
Monc:
Somehow this post of yours sounds dirty:
“Nancy GAY of the SAN FRANCISCO Chronicle reports that the Raiders will make an aggressive run at GERBIL Wilson.”
I agree 2Min
Per PFT if not already read:
SAGE TALKS END
Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that talks between the Vikings and the Texans regarding a trade that would have sent quarterback Sage Rosenfels from Houston to Minnesota have ended.
The Vikings offered a third-round pick; the Texans wanted a second-round pick.
The Vikes could now pursue J.P. Losman, who has asked to be traded out of Buffalo.
I guess Colt was really sharp throwing the ball during the combine, if that means anything.
Ole, we’ve got 2 6th rounders, maybe one for Colt. It was rumored that Chili had shown considerable interest in him at the Senior Bowl
Gay Gerbil
Last year Colt Brennan was projected to go in the 1st or 2nd round
This year, he is projected to be a second day pick
Too often, NFL teams draft potential over production
JP Losman? I did pretty good with him on Madden once.
Brad Childress will not be bringing in a legitimate quarterback. The stubborn S.O.B. is bound and determined to put the square peg in the round hole and roll with Pop-Tart Jackson as his quarterback. And you certainly can’t have a mentor-type veteran on the roster who might give advice to #7 (that right is reserved for Herr Chili).
Where does Michael Turner end up? What about Julius Jones?
Jimmy Kimmel said he was hung like a bull–a “gerbull”.
His joke.
on our local Sports Radio station, ESPN’s John Clayton said that Brennan was “far and away the best QB at the combine”
That may be true, but I sensed he was just blowing smoke up our okoles
2MT - I think it should be somewhat easier…T-Jax is still raw, but showed some improvement and the addition of AD should help…and as someone was pointing out, Chili needs to have a good year 3, so they may be even more aggressive with the $

VILMA TO SAINTS?
The Lions kicked the tires on Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma, and were regarded as the favorites to land the 12th player selected in the 2004 draft.
But the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that the Saints are close to swinging a deal for Vilma.
Vilma’s 2007 season was shortened by knee problems, and he hasn’t been a good fit for the 3-4 defense.
Turner more than likely ends up with a team like the Bears, Falcons, and possibly the Dolphins are showing interest now also.
Jones I’m really not sure of.
Wonder if perhaps the Vikes will go after Lorenzo Neal to be the FB replacement.
MHVF - so basically bribe these players to come to Minnesota and hope that T-Jax can throw more than screen and crossing patterns.
One guy (if he’s in the draft, I’m not sure) that might be worth a look in the late rounds is Sam Houston State QB Rhett Bomar. He was a great prospect and started for Oklahoma as a freshman. However, he was dismissed from the school because of “over compensation” for a job he had at a local car dealership.
I watched him play against NDSU this past season, and he accounted for all but 35 yards of the total offense in the game (of around 380 yards). One of the more impressive college QB’s I’ve ever seen play…
I like Loseman he is a good QB again another guy I am not sure will be fit for the Kao and all is irrelevant unless we get a significant addition at wr
Bones! Where you been? Not to get all misty-eyed or something, but I’ve missed our arguments
2MT
Turner = 49ers
Jones = Bears
just a guess, I have skeptic abilities
J.P. Losman wants to be traded to a team he can start for. He was the Bills number one pick, record setter for Tulane, high school standout. He had a good game against the Vikes last time he played us. Don’t think he will like collecting splinters here. And he would probably land the starting job. I just don’t see it happening.
hey Bones, finally get the cat shed door unlocked???
Will Berrian have Vince Young or T-Jax as his next QB?
Scout.com’s Adam Caplan reports the “bidding war” will be between the Vikings and Titans for Bernard Berrian when free agency begins.
Caplan calls the 49ers the “wild card” in all this. If Berrian wants to put up the best numbers he can, San Francisco is his best bet. However, agent Drew Rosenhaus is probably telling him to go for the most money. If the Vikings lose out, Jerry Porter is expected to be their secondary target.
Bones= rock band world champ…next stop world broomball champ
I knew you were gonna say that Fargo
My focus has been on hockey and I’ve been rather fed up with the Vikings lately.
2MT - yep. Although he had a few that some guy–what was his name again–let go right through his hands…so there’s reason for hope.
Ole - do your skeptic abilities get stronger as the trade winds blow?
Haven’t bought Rock Band yet. I heard the bass drum pedal snaps too easy…
In many ways I would almost prefer Porter to Berrian
I think Berrian has more speed but has also struggled with drops. Sound familiar? T-jack isn’t always known for putting the pass right on the money either. Then again he made those crappy QB’s chi town look good at times
Porter is getting older and like Berrian is experianced in making lower end QB’s look good. I think he has great Hands I would hope his attitude to clash with coach Kremlin
Bones - I owe you a Chris Simon slash to the throat.
MeMo hates J.P. Losman.
What a stupid trade Montreal made Bones
and what a good one the pengiuns made
I get that sinking feeling that we are going to revisit last year’s free agency all over again and get squat…
Monc…point I was trying to make at the end of the last Blog.
Good points.
DeShaun Foster may be heading back to CA. Reports out of San Jose have the 9ers talking with Fosters Agent.
And the Wild did squat. Out in the first round…
Here’s the bottom line for the Bears’ attempt to re-sign wide receiver Bernard Berrian: Their most recent offer — $8 million in bonus money in a five-year, $25 million package — wasn’t enough to get a deal done. Free agency begins at 11 tonight, and Berrian is seeking a payday well in excess of that — $24.5 million in the first three years of a contract — though general manager Jerry Angelo last week called the Bears’ offers to Berrian and linebacker Lance Briggs ‘’aggressive.'’ It’s unknown how much room the Bears have to improve that offer for Berrian, who is expected to be courted by the Minnesota Vikings. It’s also unclear whether Berrian and agent Drew Rosenhaus will be able to get another team — the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers also are thought to be interested — to meet his asking price, which probably would require a signing bonus of more than $12 million. — Chicago Sun-Times
wonder what’s up here?
PACKERS, BROWNS MAKE A DEAL
Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post reports that the Packers will trade defensive tackle Corey Williams to the Browns at some point after midnight.
Presumably, Williams will sign his one-year franchise tender and then sign a long-term deal, which will be traded to the Browns.
There’s no word on what the Packers will get in return.
yup 2MT, whatever way the wind blows
Bones, welcome back. I have been wearing out my fist on Buster’s face in your abscence, now it’s your turn. Why should I have all the fun
Hopefully the blog will be filled with good news over the next few hours!
Peace All!
You don’t suppose Favre IS retiring, and they are trading for Derek Anderson?
FVF…just read that a few minutes ago on PFT…wonder if there is any possible dealings going on that would possible include some type of trade w/ multiple players/draft picks and perhaps Derek Anderson in lieu of Favre retirement.
Though with success that DA had w/ Browns I’m not sure if that would be to their advantage.
FVF - Here’s a little more on that trade proposal:
Citing “sources,” the Washington Post reports the Browns will acquire franchise player Corey Williams from the Packers at midnight tonight.
Green Bay wants a second-round pick in exchange for Williams. If this report proves true, Packers GM Ted Thompson will look brilliant. By franchising Williams and putting him on the block, Thompson will have nabbed a day one pick for a player he originally appeared all but certain to lose. Feb. 28 - 9:05 pm et
Source: Washington Post
FVF…lol funny as we had same thoughts
Wow, was that not the WORST trade in NHL history? He’s a criminal…
T-minus 2 hours 10 minutes
TWO_MINUTE:
Had to study up about Porter as a free agent singing. First thing I found:
“Joey Porter has been fined three game checks for violating the NFL Personal Conduct Policy.”
Oh great! Someone to bunk with McKinnie.
OOPS! Should be JERRY Porter. Good player and good citizen. Probably be a good fit.
I read earlier today or yesterday in regards to the Browns thinking that some tampering was already going on since they had sweetened the deal for Anderson but still he didn’t bite on the offer.
Of course the Wild couldn’t pull that off, Bones…
Monc: The Huet for a second rounder baffles me. This is the way I look at it: if you were Montreal and Huet played for someone else and could be had for a second rounder at the deadline would you make that deal? I certainly would’ve!
Personally, I’m not that crazy about the Hossa trade. They certainly gave up a lot of assets to acquire what will likely end up being no more than a rental player.
Hello all! Happy Free Agency Evening!
David Edwards, a Texas high school football player who was paralyzed during a 2003 game and would later become a motivational speaker and an inspiration for the first episode of Friday Night Lights, died Wednesday, three days before his 21st birthday.
The Austin American-Statesman reports that Edwards died at a San Antonio hospital from complications of pneumonia. He had stopped breathing Monday night and slipped into a coma on Tuesday.
What about going after Collins from Washington for QB. He had a good year in relief last year and would be a good filler until we get a bonafide QB for the long haul.
All quiet across the board now as 55 minutes until FA offically opens.
especially since they are now going into the playoffs with two rookies at Goalie
Huet was gone next year anways, but if Price had a tough go in the playoffs they would have had Huet. As well if Montreal made a good run he would have gotten paid more in FA next year. I think Montreal and Huet both loseout on that one. ( Take hied Spielman no stoopid crap like that)
Now he has to win the division for the washington crapitals to make the playoffs because that is the worst division in the NHL
I like that they’re trying to trade for a QB… kind of. If we can give up a draft pick for a QB like Losman then it provides us the opportunity to give him a test drive BEFORE signing him for the long term. The free agent QB’s out there not only will cost more money, but are long term commitments…
So a guy like Collins might be good, but he’ll probably demand more than he’s worth. A trade at this position makes sense for us.
Is anybody else sick of the yearly Brett Favre watch, every year it’s the same crap, I’m retiring nope I’m playing, well I’ll let you know what I’m doing when I damn well fell like it.
Favre is greedy and selfish… if he was true leader/team player he’d let them know long before March. Maybe he has, who knows.
I mean I feel like it.
I thought it opened midnight eastern time
vike-n-the-swamp are you on Atlantic time?
Collins had a good year. He’d settle for a back-up role. But he’s a hundred years old, and all three of our quarterbacks got injured last year. I don’t think he’s a good choice.
Big News outta Phoenix..
On the Larry Fitzgerald contract talks 61.4 believe he should suck it up and resign.
Of course, Rod Graves has ‘affirmed’ that the Larry Fitzgerald contract is a done deal. And this just in for hockey fans Phoenix 2 St. Louis 1
It’s an hour and 45 away
Monc…thought it was 11:01 PM ET that it was starting. Guess perhaps it was NFL Network that messed me up as it was in Indy and they were saying 11:01 PM ET meaning CT?
Indy is in CT still right?

ET I am
46 minutes to go. Hopefully we aren’t all disappointed like a kid who didn’t get what he wanted for xmas.
Farve= Pack it in Fidel
Go moe yer lawn or something or do an informercial for boe Flex …or better yet go Moe yourself LOL
ps the mispellings of Moe were a play on words
Question: NFL Network just told me to find their Free Agency Tracker at NFL.com. I can’t find it, is anyone else out there looking for it or found it?
Anyone else having any issues w/ PFT’s website?
My mistake
just for you guys not much usually happens at the buzzer of 11:01
well for the vikes in the last few years anyways
back up now.
nope
Monc - if you have to explain it, it’s no longer funny
JUDD/KEVIN YOU GUYS OUT THERE WORKING ON STUFF OR ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL?
It probably be sometime Monday before the Vikes actually get the 3rd or 4th best player that they were after anyway.
Wi - Hahhahahahahah
I think we make at least two big plays in the next 12 hours.
Any bets Chicago goes after either Michael Turner or Julius Jones?
If they can even get anyone to come in for a visit. Usually guys go visit 3 or 4 teams before they plan on coming to us ……well not so much us because I am not involed in the preceeding and am also in New Brunswick Canada which is about a 36 hour drive away from Minnesota
Or both
FVF…I think it will be Turner as I stated previously.
Thats the same amount of big plays we made this last season.
MY FANTASY FREE AGENT SIGNINGS:
QB=J.P. Losman–Vikes
WR=Jerry Porter–Vikes
You heard it here first!
NFLN just showed that we are now nearly 36 million (35.7) in cap room… Still 8 million less than Tampa, but we’re in good shape
Monc: Hossa got injured in his first game as a Penguin…
well we already made one we tried to trade for sage and got told to go Moe ourselfs
True, except that now we are percieved as a team on the way up. The jury is still out on whether or not players like playing for Chili (I’m being nice). And we have money to spend. I’ll bet players aren’t viewing us as negatively as the past five years.
Two reasons:
1. What WR doesn’t want to be a #1?
2. What makes a better signing bonus than a bottle of scotch, a stripper names Cherry, and a ticket on a boat?
kenny;
That would be sweet if we landed those two guys.
come on guys…think…who is a mid-level special teamer the triangle is furiously negotiating with right now? also don’t overlook the fact we don’t currently have 27 safetys on the roster right now.
I did not know that Bones…How long is he out?
when is sid the kid back?
Seriously, I would not be at all surprised if several of the big name FAs avoid the Vikings like the plague. Especially the offensive players like Berrian. Are we as Viking fans really getting excited at the prospect of Bernard Berrian joining our team? Not to mention the fact that the team that gets him will likely be paying a premium…
ok, I’m out for awhile, will check back in an hour or so…
Losman isn’t a Free agent is he?
Current safeties - Darren Sharper
Current DB’s - Winfield, McCulley, Griffin, Gordon.
losman is under contract
Knee injury, likely a ligament sprain. I’m sure they won’t have an official return date until they do the MRI, but early guesses are at least a week.
Crosby has been skating at full speed and his return is expected in a week to ten days.
Berrian want sto finally get made. He’ll go to the highest bidder. The Andre Davis deal (wish it was us) set a high bar, and he’ll be looking for more cash than he’s worth. But… I don’t want another year of Wade being our leading reciever.
You’re right. He wants to be traded.
My fantasy gone bad.
well better to be conservative with it as the penguins seem to be playoff bound
Here’s the new from Seahawgs:
Seahawg continue to say they are keeping Shaun Alexander and will not have to restructure the contract.
The Seahawks have given fullback Leonard Weaver a $1.47 million restricted free agent tender.
The level of the tender gives the Seahawks the option to match any offer sheet Weaver might sign with another team after free agency begins tonight or receive a second-round draft choice as compensation for losing him.
Weaver made the team as an undrafted free agent in 2005.
Josh Brown, kicker is available as a FA
Microsoft has admitted it knew Vista was crud before it was released, and
Running back Alvin Pearman, the team’s only other restricted free agent, was not tendered an offer. He continues rehab the knee injury that ended his season.
Still worth a fourth (maybe a 3rd????) rounder, Kenny.
ASANTE TO PHILLY?
Two years ago, there were reports that center LeCharles Bentley would sign with the Eagles on the first day of free agency.
He didn’t.
The rumor was that Bentley had reneged on a verbal deal that had been brokered in advance of the start of free agency, and signed instead with the Browns.
This time around, there are Internet reports from the generally plugged-in gcobb.com that Pats cornerback Asante Samuel has a deal in place to sign with Philly. If true, Samuel can renege without consequence, just like Bentley did. And the Eagles would have no recourse, just as in the Bentley situation.
An unwritten player contract negotiated at a time when there should be negotiations at all is, obviously, not enforceable.
Other teams thought to be interested in Samuel are the Saints, Jets, and possible the Bucs. Samuel is believed to want a contract worth at least $10 million per year.
Still don’t think that the Bucs are the right fit for Samuel as Tampa 2 doesn’t necessarily need his skills. Saints or Jets would probably be the best option for him.
Bones - what FA signings, if any, would get you excited about the Vikes again?
What???? Microsoft has admitted it knew Vista was crud before it was released?
Why those…@#$%^&*!!!!!
Now, back to hockey posts.
what if we end signing two wr’s like just as an example : Porter/Booker
Or Stallworth/Berrian
we seem to be able to afford it. Don’t get caught in the examples they are just that
With $44 million to spend, he makes perfect sense for the Bucs. They could front load his contract for 2008, drive up the price that Oakland and the Seahawks would have to pay for their franchise players. The Seahawks would have to make some adjustments to afford Trufant, and that could result in cuts, which could weaken one of the Bucs biggest Conference contenders. Weaken another team, and seriously improve your team, all with one years worth of financial devestation? Makes sense to me.
I believe Moss is still a free agent isn’t he?
Maybe the Vikings will sign a Hockey player
There just isn’t a whole lot out there this year. And on top of all their other needs the team really needs to do something with the left tackle position as you can expect McKinnie to receive some sort of suspension (personally, I would like to see him given the pink slip). I guess the one wide receiver that would get my attention would be Stallworth, but I don’t see that happening. Say what you want about me being negative, but I simply have a really hard time getting excited about this team outside of #28…
i predict the vikes will sign three FA’s no one has ever heard of and two guys from w/ in the division…to include our own guys
Twins signed a couple of hockey players.
One third baseman and one first baseman.
The first baseman was league MVP two years ago. You’re either on to something or on something!!!
For now.
afvike…I’m saying that Samuels type of play doesn’t fit the Tampa 2 style of defense. Yeah it might make sense financially, weakening of conference opponents, etc. Samuels style for football IMO does not fit the Tampa 2 defense, therefore I think he doesn’t make sense in Tampa.
ak-
raiders did a preemptive fu to the whole league with the tommy kelly contract
NFL network is talking about the Vikes going after DE Justin Smith from Cincy.
I agree with the McKinnie assessment. I’d like to see us sign a replacement and deal him away. In that order.
How about Larry Allen, He old but still a very good tackle.
Or is he a guard I don’t remember but I know he is still pretty good.

[…] “Word out of Houston” is that the Texans and Vikes have broken off trade talks, which would send Houston a pick for Sage Rosenfels. I can’t even begin to tell you how disappointed that makes me. Sage for anything would kick ass. The sad fact is that, with Sage at the helm, I don’t think we are a playoff capable team. He’s a backup. He had a career year. It’s called trading high. Take a 3rd and 4th or 5th for him, and be happy. […]
Sage will be a Viking.Vikings love this guy, and he fits the system. He is the best QB out there Vikings will offer a 2008 third and a 2009 fourth and Houston will bite, the two teams have 7 weeks before the draft to get this trade done…
[…] So, we know that our heroic Texans are willing to trade Teh Schaub, and we know that we’re really, oh just super interested in re-signing Craig Nall to be Schaub’s backup. We know that a certain team up north is willing to cough up a third round pick for Rosie Rosenfels. And we know (jeez, repetitive much?) there are reports the Texans are trying to trade back and flip 1st round picks with the Steelers and pick up a 3rd round pick for the effort (all the way down just above the comments).
