Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards will be suspended today by the NFL for violating the league’s policy on anabolic steroids and related substances, according to coach Brad Childress.
According to a press release from the NFL, Edwards will be eligible to return to the Vikings’ active roster on Dec. 31. That is a day after the team’s regular-season finale at Denver. Edwards will not be paid during his absence, meaning he will lose $84,705.88. That is four game checks of his $360,000 base salary.
“It’s disappointing but there are policies in place and our players have to adhere to those policies,” Childress said. “Every team goes through challenges as you go through the year. We’ve been through some of our own. It’s an opportunity to have others step up and if I point to the guys that have stepped up so far they relish that opportunity. Whether it’s Jeff Dugan for Tony Richardson [at fullback] or Marcus McCauley for Antoine [Winfield at cornerback] or Chester Taylor for Adrian [Peterson at running back]. … That’s what this whole thing is all about. I am disappointed but it’s another challenge on the way.”
Edwards has started 11 of 12 games this season at right end. He played but did not start in last Sunday’s victory over Detroit.
A fourth-round pick out of Purdue in 2006 by the Vikings, Edwards is 10th on the team with 41 tackles. He is second with four sacks, a half-sack behind rookie end Brian Robison.
Childress said he found out about Edwards’ suspension this morning and that the decision to start Erasmus James on Sunday had nothing to do with this situation. “I can’t comment on it,” Childress said. “It’s under the substance policy, it’s pretty self explanatory.”
Those in line to see more playing time with Edwards out include James, Robison and Jayme Mitchell. James, slowed by injuries much of this season, is likely to remain the starter at right end.
Edwards becomes the second Vikings player to be suspended in as many weeks by the NFL. Defensive tackle Fred Evans will serve the second game of a two-game suspension this Sunday for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
Yeah baby.
I guess that explains the high energy, maybe. Well, there goes or RDE pass rush. Crap.
Thanks Judd! I guess…
NOthing more than a druggie. The horror!
Move Robison over to that side and keep James for back up only. James = very slow.
Edwards, get clean and we will see you in the playoffs.
… you should go to rehab, Todd. And tell Amy RTG says “hey hey” while you’re there …
Is he on drugs?
What kind of a moron gets suspended for 4 games during a playoff push?
…..wait, nevermind.
18 years yesterday. Woot, I guess.
D.A.R.E too keep kids off drugs!

Steroids! Ugh!!!
Apparently not…
Somehow, I blame Disco.
Maybe Erasmus James can now show us why he was a first round pick.
… Disco. Balco. Hmm, there’s a connection there, isn’t there?
RTG, does than mean that BP = full of gas?
… or petrol, as you Brits like to call it.
Is anyone surprised?
I think I found out what Paulapagos did to get his parole hearing…
2MT - James is a flop. I tried giving him a chance but he has not looked good at all this year when he finally gets on the field.

VQ + AW minicorndogs = more gas than a BP station…
Udeze is the real flop. What a waste of a #1 pick.
I guess some of Edwards’ erratic behavior has been explained now.
I think Mitchell might surprise some OT’s down the stretch.
While shopping last night, I smelled a corndog-like smell and contemplated vomiting…
the vikes should go with jayme mitchell and robison at ends sunday. robison is a beast in the making and will only get better with experience.
LMFAO!
wisvike - you’re all about giving T-Jax every opportunity but you’ve already saying James is a flop? He hasn’t had that much playing time yet because of injuries. I for one am optimistic that James can be a good DE.
I’m also hoping that Robison really makes a statement this weekend. This is a good chance for him to make people remember his name.
… I think James and Udeze make better TFs, but that’s just my opion.
No thanks, VikingStooge! (Note the sarcasm, Bus-lan)
I’m hoping this game is a blackout…
VQ = watching ‘Bob Newhart’ = waiting to hear ‘Hi Bob’
T-Jax has only been here for less than 2 years, James has been here a lot longer and can’t earn his job back.
The Viking Age | A Minnesota Vikings Blog - I don’t believe you. were did you read that?
wisvike - James was drated in 2005, had 28 tackles and 4 sacks that year. He missed most of last year and hasn’t had many opportunities this year because his knee wasn’t fully healed. T-Jax was drafted in 2006. So what do you mean by “a lot longer”.
One year seems pretty long to me. I still think he isn’t very good. He is from WI. I mean come on. Bennett was from WI. If they played for the badgers they usually don’t pan out.
I guess I killed the blog. Sorry.
James does have 1 sack in his limited playing time this year. He could end up being a beast the next 4 games and retain his starting DE position he lost to Edwards while he was out because of injury.
… as Fragiles Fred would say, Jame is lames.
