Udeze to appeal fine

November 21st, 2007 – 12:49 PM by Judd Zulgad

Vikings defensive end Kenechi Udeze is planning to appeal the $7,500 fine the NFL handed down for his third-quarter hit on Packers quarterback Brett Favre in the Nov. 11 game at Lambeau Field. The fine was for unneccessary roughness (hit to the quarterback’s head area.)

“That wasn’t a dirty play and I thought that wasn’t one that was looked at from my point of view because in no way or shape or form was I trying to go after him or hit him on the head,” Udeze explained. “What happened was Brett didn’t see me coming. He was kind of scouting out the play action and Chad [Greenway] had cut off his angle.

“He turned into me and he didn’t see me. All I can do as a defensive player is try to avoid him because I saw him going down at the last second. … So he went down and I was trying to jump over and avoid him. When I did it, my hand went over his head and hit him. It’s funny because two plays later he was smiling at me. We’ll see what happens.”

Asked if Favre might have been doing a bit of acting, Udeze said: “I believe so because I know if I lead with my head I’m going to hurt somebody. If anybody watches [me] they know that one, I’m not a dirty player and two, that was strictly Brett waiting to the last second to fall down. But what can I do?”

Remember, we’re talking about Fav-ray here. Udeze is lucky he didn’t get sentenced to hard time.

… closest Udeze has been to the QB all year. I hope this doesn’t create a chilling effect. “Maybe I’ll just stay here on the line of scrimmage. I’d sure hate to get fined again.”

I’ll have some pie, please.

I’m not saying I think Chili is the guy. I’m saying we don’t know yet. Is he arrogant? Yes; most head coaches are. Does he communicate well? No, but he can work on that.

I think everyone will agree that he has a much better relationship with the team this year over last year. He put in the “players council” to help advise him with certain matters. So, it appears he can learn from his mistakes. Are players calling him out this year, or quitting on him? It doesn’t seem like it.

The national talking heads (former GMs, former players) seem to think that he is still a good coach. Don’t take this the wrong way, but I will take the judgements of football people over the fan’s judgements. Fans are too close to the situation and emotional.

Again, you guys are playing hypotheticals, which is not realistic. A former coach under contract with his current employer for another year would be stupid to say something like that.

Disco - do you really think the coach who doesn’t want his stars to get hurt doesn’t want to win? Sure he does, but it’s a risk/reward decision.

I realize I shouldn’t have said never, as I generally don’t like absolutes myself. However, realistically speaking, fans should cheer for their team to win. See VQ’s cause/effect comment.

Okay, let’s put this one to bed.

Jet - I did say that a coach would like to win, but it wasn’t that important.

The only reason I laid out the scenario was because someone said on the previous string that they would “never” root for the Vikes to lose. I was just trying to stir the creative juices amongst us all to show that there is no such thing as never.

….it did make for some interesting dicussions though, so it accomplished what I intended it for.

ok, so AP is no longer a “longshot” to play this weekend? One week off for a partially torn LCL??? Ok, you heard it here first folks. Chili will try to play AP on Sunday.

tenthreeleader, try not to display your ignorance by even implying Favre had anything to do with this. In fact he waived it off, but if you want to tilt at Windmills (do you even get the reference) why not go after Winfield for all his cheap shots over the years.
