Vikings go with Detmer

November 6th, 2007 – 3:01 PM by Judd Zulgad

The Vikings have settled on a veteran quarterback, but it’s not St. Paul native Chris Weinke.

Former Eagles quarterback Koy Detmer, who along with Weinke worked out for the Vikings today at Winter Park, agreed to a contract. Detmer will serve as veteran insurance if Tarvaris Jackson and Kelly Holcomb are unable to go because of injuries.

If that’s the case Brooks Bollinger will get the start. Jackson suffered a concussion Sunday against San Diego and is still undergoing tests. Holcomb, meanwhile, is recovering from a neck injury.

Detmer is familiar with the Vikings system, having played under coach Brad Childress when Childress was the offensvie coordinator with the Eagles.

Detmer, 34, spent 10 seasons with Philadelphia after playing college football at Colorado. Detmer mainly served as Donovan McNabb’s backup and as a holder for kicker David Akers during his time with the Eagles.

Update: CB Ronyell Whitaker was waived to clear a spot for Detmer on the roster. The Vikings also worked out wide receivers Justin Surrency (Northern Iowa) and Brent Little (Southern Illinois) on Tuesday.

Peterson honored: Here’s one that will surprise nobody. Adrian Peteson has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. It’s hard to deny a player this honor after he rushes for an NFL single-game record 296 yards and three touchdowns. The first time Peterson won this award he rushed for only 224 yards against Chicago. (Correction: Yes, I had Peterson rushing for 396 yards in the original version of this copy. It’s fixed now thanks to a nice catch by a reader. Everyone knows Peterson won’t have his 396-yard game until later this season.)

… well, the Vikings marketing department needs to get creative. How about an egg toss at Chili’s head? Put a pickup truck in the middle of the field and pass out pink slips for paper airplanes? Or, everytime the offense is looking at 3 and 10 or longer, the play is determined by which Tires Plus ™ tire wins the tire race …

Childress has never been to Coy about using Eagle has-beens, has he?

Or I guess in this case, an Eagle never-really-was……

2 guys - Detmer and Bollinger - who would probably have a tough time cracking the starting lineup of any top 5 college team. Goes to show you how watered down this league is.

Guess anyone can look like Tom Brady if AP continues to run like has this season and the offensive line blocks like it did on Sunday.

By signing Detmer I think the Marketing Department will need to “think outside of the box”.

Career: 354 attempts. 10 TDs, 14 INTs career passer rating of 61.2. Hasn’t thrown a TD since 2002, although he did throw three picks in 2005…

Who was that guy who QB’d the Vikings during the strike year? I just remember Jerry Burns kinda shaking his head a lot.

Well, I suppose this makes sense. If you might need a guy *this week*, you bring in a guy that knows the system. I really hope they don’t need him, though. I want Tarvaris to play. I don’t want the front office to have *any* uncertainty about what we have at the QB position going into this offseason, and for that to happen, they need to see TJ play.

VikelSays- Not sure if you ever played or coached football, but most offensive plays if all blocking schemes are carried out perfectly will result in a touchdown. Now I believe I did say most plays earlier as well. I played through college as well as coached Defensive Line at a Division II school in the 90’s.

dutabi84 - I graduated from M.L. in 1977 and played on the undefeated team. This years team seems to be doing very well and according to my Dad, is a lot bigger than we ever were. I moved to Nashville in 1995 and Austin in 2003.

Of all of the underwhelming QB’s out there Detmer is probably the best choice.

ChiliDipWad very obviously does not want to bring in a QB that could ever be considered even a remote threat to TJack.

As long as every QB on the roster is crappy and/or old and/or both, it will always make the most sense to play TJack.

Shaun King or Aaron Brooks seem to me like they would have made a lot more sense. BUT there probably is something to the fact that Detmer understands the KAO and could realistically be semi-functional right off the bat.

vikson says:

November 6th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

Actually you are partially correct, Tommy Kramer was a rookie the year of the broken ankle that Fan had, and came of the bench in that game to lead the Viks to an amazing come back win, but Lee started the playoffs, much to the chagrin of viking fans who wanted Kramer, the great and wise Viking fans also called for Kramer to be inserted the next season rather than Fran, all Tark did was have his best statistical season of his career in that his final season.

vikson says:

November 6th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

as to the QB situation, lets face it if ANY OF THEM WERE ANY GOOD, they would already be with a team, to expect to have a competent QB sitting at home waiting for a cal is pretty naive, if Koy does play it would be because of the worst possible senario, the third QB fills his biggest role in practice running the opposing team’s offense

JOHN8888 says:

November 6th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

Hey, not bad, considering I was, I think, 12. I do remember TK’s first appearance as a Viking. He got knocked out. Remember they kept a camera on him and he was twitching like T-Jack was on Sunday? It was pretty gruesome.

I haven’t been on here a while, get tired of all the ridiculousness, but I wll say, that it became apparent with the field goal call, that Cildress is not NFL coaching material, should have sent him to Pittsburg instead, reminds me of when the Vikings let Tony Dungy go elsewhere to become a head coach too.

Armchairdude says:

Ok. Brooky B completes for passes and suddenly AP is running wild. Thats my take. Just make sure we have a QB that can just complete 50% of his passes and we are Super Bowl bound. When the Chargers had to leave LB’s and Corners in coverage it was All Day AP the rest of the day.

VIKES DUST OFF DETMER

A week after laughing off the possibility of signing a washed-up, unemployed quarterback to prop up a pathetic depth chart at the position, the Vikings have signed . . . a washed-up, unemployed quarterback to prop up a pathetic depth chart at the position.

Specifically, the Vikings have added Koy Detmer, a former Eagles backup who eventually was re-signed to the team in 2006 not because he can play quarterback effectively but because he’s a competent holder.

Detmer, 34, has a career passer rating of 61.2. The guy whom coach Brad Childress publicly dissed last week, Jeff George, is five years older — and has a career passer rating of 80.4.

So when Vikings coach Brad Childress was asked whether George is on the downside of his career and said, “Downside would probably be — I think — kind,” couldn’t Childress have said the same thing about Detmer?

Look, we’re not saying that the Vikings definitely should have signed George. But why not bring the guy in for a look-see? We’ve always referred to George as having an arm by NASA and a body by Lego. Even if he has lost a little speed off of the fastball, he likely can still bring the heat with the best of them. And it’s not as if approach his 40th birthday would have made him significantly slower or less mobile.

Really, what better way to make a defense pay for crowding the line of scrimmage to stop Adrian Peterson than to have George take a three-step drop and rifling the ball to receivers in single coverage?

Of course, it can never happen now, given that Childress opted to gratuitously — and foolishly — dismiss the possibility of kicking the tires on a guy who very well could be much more capable of getting the job done than the guy whom Childress opted to sign.

We should not be where we are now! Getting Koy Detmer is the best option now, but if that idiot would not have gambled with the current idiot starting at Qb we might have a better record. I dont like doing hypotheticals, but an average Qb would have produced 2+ more wins. its Klinks fault we are 2-5 cause everyone knew Tjax was not a good or even average QB and he still started him and still continues to start. When will the T-Jack experiment end.

vikson says:

November 6th, 2007 at 6:43 pm

hmmm this past July and August I didn’t see a single entry on this blog (And I was on here every day) saying T-Jax shouldn’t be the starter,,,NOT ONE,,,what a bunch of of whiny hypocryts! Steve Young SUCKED with Tampa Bay, Warren Moon had to labor in obscurity for 6 years in the CFL before he got an NFL job, Trent Green was a wannabe with the Rams, Tom Brady was a 6th rounder, and NO ONE ever thought he would be a starter in the NFL,,,so lay off he may or may not be a QB, it is waaaaaay too soon to know,,,,waaaaaaaay tooo soon, and pass defense or lack of, other than this past game is why the Vikings have lost. NOT the play of the QB

I wonder if Chili was playing for a 2-14 season. I mean..he plays a QB that’s obviously not ready and had his best athlete as a back-up. You think he did this to take a season to ” groom” TJ and get a great draft pick?

The Genie out of the bottle now is AP. He has to play him and he is changing the game. Chili has no choice now but to try for playoffs because the fans know we are a QB away from a complete team. Let’s not forget about the Defense!! As tired as those guys have been it had to be great for them to sit back and watch the damage happening to the opponent

if Childress really is smart enough to keep giving AD the ball, the only thing required of the QB is to not screw up, also, if that pass D we saw versus San Diego is real, then they are a contender, also, I’m bneginning to thing the youngster at WR Rice, may end up being the steal of the draft

eli_dale says:

I have said it many times
1 year, 5 years, 10 years
I don’t think TJ has or will have the tools to cut it as an NFL caliber QB -
1 who leads this team or any other team to the promise land.
I don’t think he has the decision-making skills.
Something has to be ingrained by now and nothing seems to be.
JUST M.O. gang

gr8scot says:

hmmmm Vikson: Jackson, Bollinger, Hensen, Thigpen those were the choices in July and most of August. I remember lots of bloggers lammenting the failure to get a quality FA QB. So a year and a half isn’t way too soon. In a year and a half you’d expect to see some glimmer of potential. It is too soon to be a final product, but plenty of time to show something (other than the inability to stay healthy).

Jack Dupp says:

What happened while Chilly was in Philly? Did he fall in love with every guy he’s ever coached? T. Jack reminds me of Akili Smith. He’ll be out of the league in 2 years.

vikson says:

November 6th, 2007 at 7:02 pm

I’m not a Jackson fan at this point, but I’m not a detractor yet either, and it IS too soon, physically he does have the tools, decision making is partly the fault of the offense, Childress loves the idea that he is a genious, (In his mind) I guarantee you, there are not many, if any play books in the NFL less user freindly then his. health is an issue, no question,

BleedPurple says:

November 6th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

Since it appears Colonel Dumbass Klink reads this blog and actually thinks statements made in jest are true suggestions, here are two true real ones:

1) Spend more time finding a qb with an arm and that can make decisions.

2) Fix the KAO so that it could be possible to have a passing game that has ohhh, 200+ yards a game. Has that even happened this season? According to NFL.com, the Purple rank 30th in passing, with a whopping 65.7 qb rating. And, the team has a whopping 50.5% completion percentage.

Compare that to GB, where the rating is 93.3, and 66.6% completion. Since this is supposed to be an offense based on the Jerry Burns and Bill Walsh approach, why cannot just any thrower off the street have a higher completion percentage? The answer is within our collective grasp. Other than Holcomb being in Philly part of this year, all other qbs are hand picked by Klink. Makes one wonder what is truly the reason for the dedication to Philly cast offs, doesn’t it? Also, since this is such a complicated precise offense per Klink, isn’t it also true that other than Holcomb, the other qb’s are supposed to know the details so well to complete passes better? Does anyone blame Brad Johnson for leaving this sorry offense? I do not. I wish he were here to kick Klink’s ass, but he is enjoying watching 30 million dollar boy run the show.

Finally, it makes no sense to have Koy Detmer. The last thing to ponder is the fact that Koy’s career rating is nearly the same as the team rating right now (61.2 compared to 65.7). One theory is that if a qb were to show up TJ with a rating closer to 100, then TJ’s psyche would be totally lost, but that is merely a theory.

JetCityVikesFan says:

November 6th, 2007 at 7:58 pm

If I get a chance, I’ll ahve to bring this up to the pessimists club (PC)again tomorrow. Can one of you please describe the “blocking scheme” used by the Vikings during the game? I’m sure it couldn’t have been zone blocking, because, according to the PC, our blockers cannot handle the zone blocking scheme due to their size.

bengraved says:

November 6th, 2007 at 7:58 pm

If the vikes going to have any success against the pack, they better have a better game plan, then the first time they played the pack. Favre completed, almost ninety percent of short range passes, against our defense. Favre ended up with almost three hundred passing yards. Key to stopping pack, is to pressure favre. But he has a good offensive line, so going to be very difficult. Creative type blitzes might help. Would like nothing better, then to see the vikes, beat the pack at lambeau

BleedPurple says:

November 6th, 2007 at 8:01 pm

Dan, I have thought about that too. However, why would Philly take Klink back? The win loss record speaks volumes to all of the other teams. Throw in the usage of AP up until San Diego, and no one wants Klink. Don’t forget how dedicated Klink is to starting a guy not ready for prime time or even half prime time. TJ is so ruined now, it is a large project to get him in the right mindset.

bengraved says:

Would like to see Bollinger have a super game. Bollinger, IMO is the best of the viking qb’s. which still is not saying much. Someone should tell bollinger to roll out, and throw the ball out of bounds, instead of taking the long sacks, like he has in the past.

eli_dale says:

November 6th, 2007 at 8:04 pm

favre surely will pick the purple apart again with those quick slants, tight end etc. he gets rid of the ball so damn quick . gettin 10 yards doesn’t seem like nuttin to GB.

PURPLE best weapon .. keep the offense on the field..

JetCityVikesFan says:

November 6th, 2007 at 8:06 pm

If the D plays as good as they did on Sunday, then I think we have a realistic chance of winning in GB. However, I think Favre will be much more accurate than Rivers was under pressure. If we just keep someone deep in the secondary, we shouldn’t give up the deep ball for a TD.

BP - who do you think the Vikes should have picked up that could realistically come in and play? The guy has to be familiar with the system. Not sure who else would’ve been, other than Hensen. Still not sure why he wasn’t brought in since he knows Chili and the players.

bengraved says:

November 6th, 2007 at 8:07 pm

Not only is favre more accurate, then rivers, he has a better offensive line.

bengraved says:

November 6th, 2007 at 8:08 pm

danmyte says:

November 6th, 2007 at 8:09 pm

I too think that Bollinger is the Vikings best option at QB. He can move a little and seems ready to spread it around. The Vikings have enough talent to keep games close on defense and with AD on offense will be able to occasionally be able to explode (when he does). But I still do not think that Klink is the man to lead this team to where thye want to go. They also still need some other pieces yet including a QB and another receiver.

eli_dale says:

November 6th, 2007 at 8:12 pm

yep - I see a receiver like TO and think man the VIKES need an animal on the outside ,,, big, tall, stong, fast cat who can go across the middle, good RAC, dish out some punishment if need be, can be doubled covered and make something happen etc..

Wayup North says:

Yeah - after Romo busted loose on sunday (and Portis - even with AD, your RBs did better than mine) I figured that my only chance was for the Steelers D to get 30 or more points. It was close - you pretty much beat me with extra points! Oh well - I kept bouncing back and forth between starting Maroney and Kevin Jones but I guess I should have started Chester along with Adrian. Darn that hindsight . . .

JetCityVikesFan says:

November 6th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

Ben - you’re right with the pressure. He can certainly get rid of the ball fast, but he can make some very stupid decisions too.

I don’t think I’ve seen the Vikes D bring as much pressure the 1st 7 games as they did Sunday. Did someone sneak Tony Dungy from the early 90’s onto the sidelines?

danmyte says:

November 6th, 2007 at 8:19 pm

The Chargers had some opportunities early in the passing game to score on the Vikings but Rivers was unable to connect. I sure hope the Vikings can shore that up because Favre is much better than Rivers. Is Winfield going to be back?

eli_dale says:

November 6th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

I know 1 thing … the PURPLE playing the pack.

If the pack is down with 2 minutes to go and get the kickoff after MINY scores…..

Surely BF drives em down the field for the winning goal as the purple DBs will be playing 15 yards off the ball.

VIKING “O” on the field for long, sustainted drives sounds like a nice gameplan.

Wayup North says:

November 6th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

I just looked at ProFootballTalk.com and the author has a really good point. Chilli made a joke of Jeff George coming to the Vikings, but then they go out and sign Detmer. George is only 5 years older and has a lot stronger arm then Detmer ever had. It is Chilli’s belief that his system trumps talent. If it wasn’t for AP, Chilli would definitely be looking at a pink slip this winter. It is an extremely talented player who has won games for them, not the system. He just doesn’t get it.

Jack Dupp, I agree that the Vikings should have pursued Jeff Garcia more agressively. So next year is not lost (if Chillidip is still the coach), would it be a good thing to pursue Jake Plummer to possibly get him out of retirement? He had a great year in ‘05 for Denver running the WCO and I think his downfall last year he was looking over his shoulder at Cutler. I would think that a back like AP would make it tempting to QB this team. Of course this would be dependent on getting his rights and if he wants to play. I think he is comfortable not playing football.

south-a-state says:

November 6th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

Bollinger was around 130 passer rating against SD. Yeah, I know there is nothing in his history to suggest this is sustainable, but given that his 7-10 for 95 was pretty well the best game of any Vikes QB this year, (a) why wouldn’t we send him back out to see if lightning strikes twice and (b) why is there so little optimism here that it can? Anyone that sees his 40 yd to Sidney has to at least respect that possibility and leave someone out of the box, which is all good for AD. We don’t have any great options, but someone has to play QB, and it seems Brooks is our best chance to win some games.

Fargo,
I thought that too, if Chilli didn’t coach them, they can’t be any good (see Garcia,Carr, and every other QB Chill passed on)

Once the QB Master has taught you the hidden secrets, you are never the same…”grasshopper, snatch the pepple from my hand”, etc…

Also, any former baby-sitter affiliation counts also (Henson)

That’s right, temporarily forgot about the pre-M.L.W.R. era.

I’ve been to the Dell Diamond a few times. Didn’t live too far from there - lived in the Cat Hollow area, a development near the HEB off of 620/O’connor.

As for why I live in Iowa, long story. Definitely plan on being in Minnesota come this next summer though.

Now to be on topic - we need to bring in Adrian McPherson. With 2 Adrians, we’ll be Superbowl bound in no time. As long as he’s not in jail or anything.

Interesting article:

Developing the Wrong Prospect?
In relief of Tarvaris Jackson this season, Brooks Bollinger has compiled an impressive quarterback rating of 112.3 and is completing over 70 percent of his passes. Is there something written in stone that says he’ll never be a successful starting quarterback?

Some guys get a reputation as career backups and never really get a chance to start. Bollinger played a little with the New York Jets before coming to the Vikes, but didn’t set the world on fire. The bulk of his playing time was in his second season, playing 11 games and compiling a below-average 72.9 quarterback rating. Right now, he’s playing very well whenever he enters a game, and it’s only his fourth year.

Rest of the story

Jet, sorry to take so long to be available to write again. That is the way it goes when time is limited. Hopefully, you will be able to read this before the next blog starts. I thought and thought about how to best answer your question. I have two scenarios.

1) If I were HC of the team, what would I have done from the beginning?
Answer: When I assumed coaching duties, I had a questionable MVP caliber qb trying to rehab a very serious career threatening injury by himself, and is asking for more money representing himself. But I also have a former Super Bowl winner as my backup, with plenty of good qb experiences. Depending on how the negotiations turn out, let the GM and Owner deal with that contract stuff. From a playing standpoint, I am very concerned that the rehab will have a chance to play 12 months after the surgery. If the rehab looks like crap, dump the guy (this is the only decision that has made any sense with Klink). Now, I have my backup guy ready to go. I closely analyze all game tape for B Johnson, customizing my play calling on his strengths. Next, I make sure that the offensive strategy is consistently aligned with (not the stars) the rest of the players strengths too. I think I need a running back, but this guy MeMo has a shot. I want to have a backup plan in case of injury at the position. Fast forward to today, and most likely there is not a problem, because my guy B Johnson is still here, happy as a clam for having an offense that works. Ooops, if during my first draft or second draft, the best available at the time is a qb, take one for the future and develop the kid over a two to three year plan (practice squad anyone?)

2) What would I do if no matter what happened to me in the past, I was forced to start my long term project and he gets seriously injured with a concussion, a broken finger, and a groin injury to prevent running out of trouble? (not exactly present reality for the team, but sorta close)
Answer: Have a quarterback contest to replenish my non existent quarterback depth. The contest would be bring in all available veteran guys, even ones who wish to come out of retirement. There is not an age limit, but passing a physical is a must. Say this is a bevy of 8 or more men. Oh yeah, I will not care whether I have coached them before or not. Either they look good or they do not in the tryout. I also do homework on all of them prior to their arrival and know what the strengths and weaknesses are for each guy. If I am too busy leading the team, delegate, delegate, delegate. Remember, this is my solution so every one of my assistants are fully ready to coach, have a clue about their jobs, and are fully trusted to present me with the information I need. Since I gave the team two days off, I have some time while not planning the game for GB to watch the quarterback contest. Now, prior to the contest, all of my drills will be pre-determined. My assistants (probably the O Coord and the quarterback coach) run the contest. All I have to do is attend and have my eyes open. Next, regardless of who they are, pick the top three of the contest. Those three are interviewed by the OC and the quarterback coach. The interviews are all graded too. With today’s modern technology, the results are known by the afternoon. Now, the three finalists are subjected to more tests, which do not match the ones from the larger group. The three are graded and I interview each of them. Unless one of them is so damn good for both contests, they have to be able to communicate with the OC and qb coach. Me, not so much. All I will need is a guy who can do what is asked and we have plays which match the contest winner’s strengths.

So, in this world of qb has-beens and second chance wannabees, I do not know who the winner would be without my assistants doing their jobs and running the contest. By the end of the day, the answer would be known though. The attendees would have to be all who express interest:

Drew Henson
Jeff George
Jim Drunkenmiller
Heath Shuler
Jeff Hostettler
Mark Rypien
Ray Lucas
Scott Mitchell
Stan Humphries
Neil O’Donnell
Gino Toretta
Aaron Brooks
Bryan Cupito
Chris Weinke
CFL guys
etc.

Unfortunately, I cannot answer with a single man, because I have not seen most of these guys play for a long while. But at least you have a glimpse as to why I am so torqued at Colonel Dumbass Klink. I would have had installed a much better plan from the beginning and likely not be in this mess to begin with. Playing a Div 1-AA guy when not actually forced to do it is crazy. Recall that even when TJ showed zero promise the last 3 games of 2006, Klink had already decided B Johnson was out. Klink in many ways has created this situation due to wacky decisions and insistence on having qbs known personally by Klink. I am still not sure how Holcomb got here since I cannot seem to find how Klink and Holcomb know each other before being traded from Philly. Hope this answers your question better than “FIRE DUMBASS NOW” statements.

BleedPurple says:

November 6th, 2007 at 11:58 pm

Oh yeah, I forgot one other very important item. BB has shown great promise lately. So, let the two really injured guys heal up, start BB, and my contest winner is the designated backup. If real results are shown by the contest winner, figure out a way to rotate quarterbacks during the game. If BB does not like it, too bad. I am the coach and I get paid to win, not worry about a player’s ego as much as winning and living up to my contract obligations. We all have a job to do and that is win games, period. No other goals matter as much as that. This is the NFL baby. Oh yeah, winning may even get me that big bonus clause met and the new stadium up during my tenure. It all starts with winning. Losing is not a result that is easily accepted (if at all).

Brooks bollinger is streaky at least he was In training camp. He had a few days where he looked good enough to put on a football field an win….Then this monster would posses him and suddenly ouch that was ugly. Sportsline power rankings have green bay at #3 behind new england and indianapolis. So this would make a statment if we beat them. I am cautiously opptimistic that we have a reasonable chance to win. To say that we have this one in the bag would be a far strech from the truth. I would say we have a 45% chance of winning. Factoring in that greenbay has beat us once this year. And that Bret Favre has been less than stellar this year out doors at lambau field. Anyway you look at it I will be glued to the Televison.. I am really looking forward to the oakland game… Thay will hopefully have jamarcus russle in.. An inexperienced rookie QB. That should be a fun game to watch.. I would give us a 60% chance of winning that one.

I don’t understand all the whining about Detmer. He’s not expected to actually play; only if disaster happens. In that case you need someone with a basic understanding of the play calls so you’re not limited to just handing off. Even a mediocre to poor guy that already understands the offense is better in those circumstances than a veteran or up-and-comer with little or no knowledge of the offense. Besides, is there anyone out there that’s definitely better than Detmer? Henson was the only other guy that made sense, and either he has already made other career commitments or Chili figures he’s already done him enough favors.

As an aside to Bleed, Heath Shuler wouldn’t leave his seat in the House of Reps–especially just having introduced a major piece of legislation–so take him off your list.

Some of Adrians contract incentives found at the Pi0n33r pr3$$ “Peterson, who already has guaranteed himself a one-time, $2.45 million bonus by surpassing 701 yards rushing, is halfway to another sizable incentive. He can add $2.5 million to his $2.695 million base salary for 2010 by topping 1,000 yards in two of his first three seasons.

If he tops 1,300 yards once, he adds $1 million to his fifth-year salary, scheduled to be $3.94 million. If he tops 1,300 yards twice, $3 million would be added to his fifth-year salary.

Reaching 2,000 yards or scoring 20 touchdowns in a single season would add $1 million for each instance to his 2011 base salary. Interestingly, if Peterson remains at this torrid pace, his 2011 pay could top $8 million, a threshold that could compel the Vikings to negotiate an extension.

He also could earn $250,000 bonuses for rookie of the year, league most valuable player and Super Bowl MVP.

Peterson would have to win every accolade, rush for 2,000 yards and score 20 touchdowns to earn $40.5 million over the next five seasons. More realistically, Peterson, who was guaranteed $17 million, could earn up to $30 million.

But nothing seems out of reach for Peterson, who leads the NFL in rushing with 1,036 yards.

Asked about Peterson’s potential, Vikings coach Brad Childress said, “All you can go by is the numbers, and the numbers say that nobody has done that before.

“I do believe that he is going to get better and better, and obviously, he’ll have to do it with the five guys that are in front of him.”
Two players have won two consecutive NFL rookie of the month awards. But Peterson is well on his way to a third in a row, something that has not been done since the award started in 1996. Jevon Kearse won the award three times in 1999, but not in three consecutive months.”

Don’t buy the conspircy theory cliff (AD being held back to save $). The extra $ going into AD’s pocket is a lot less important to Chili than losing all the $ going into his pocket if he gets fired. I think he did it for exactly the reasons he says: rookie has to learn a few things first, wants to keep both AD and Chester healthy for the whole season, and out of respect for the veteran until performance made it impossible to do otherwise.

deank says:

November 7th, 2007 at 7:30 am

Let’s look at the big picture here ladies and germs:

Koy Detmer is an insurance package not a possible solution to our QB situation. With Holcomb’s injured neck and TJ’s injured ego, the HC needs a QB he can throw into the fire the next time McKinnie needs to contemplate whether or not his next fart is going to be wet from food poisoning (instead of following through with his blocking assignment and yet another QB gets pile drived into the turf.) It’s cute and all throwing out some of the “available” QB’s still out there but in all reality we’re one bad play away from a “newbie” standing in the huddle attempting to decypher Chili’s plays. While he won’t hoist a ball sixty yards in the air to a wide open “Mr. Magoo”, Detmer won’t throw a 120 mph screen pass five yards down the field like TJ does either. Perhaps the prettiest non-AD/AP play of the day was the screen pass to Chester. One of our biggest assets in the past was this play and I’ve seen fewer do it prettier than Medwelde Moore. I don’t know what it is that Childress disllikes about this guy, but I still feel he is the most under-utilized player on this current squad. TJ is not near ready to run this team and these little fluke injuries are a blessing in disguise for the veterans on this squad who at least want a shot at the playoffs. Gracia probably would have been a great off-season pick up but management had already put too much stock in Jackson and his band of “not ready for prime time” backups in the offseason. As I said yesterday, I like George but had he come hear and been successful, it would have created an unwanted controversy similar to what we’re going to probably see now anyway if Bollinger plays and succeeds Sunday. Besides Detmer can hold for extra points and field goals the next time Kluwe gets hurt on an opponents special teams TD.

November 7th, 2007 at 8:59 am

What about that guy that QB’d the three strike games back in the 80’s?
Was it Grimm?

2Minute Tommy says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:02 am

MHVF - I can’t say that I have.

BIGVIKING says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:07 am

Thanks Snapit…after watching that video, glad the Vikings got the younger, less whiney-making excuses, of the two Detmer’s…geez Ty, get over it, your younger brother kicked your butt.

MudHenVikeFan says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:08 am

2MT - if you like the kind of food that goes great with beer and that you know you’ll probably regret while sitting on the throne later…well then, you’ve got to try Packo’s…and don’t gorget the Pickles & Peppers on the side. You can probably find the Packo’s sauce and jar of P&P at your local specialty grocery store or you can order online. Good stuff! Made famous on M*A*S*H by local celebrity Jamie Farr (Klinger).

Inferno Chili Now! says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:13 am

Chili Spaghetti is awsome.

Keep in mind that the chili isn’t like a normal Hormel’s chili or anything like that. It’s like a cross between a spaghetti sauce and a chili.

A very distinct, kind of spicy flavor.
2 franchises in the area serve it. Skyline (the original) and Goldstar.

Is it lunch time yet?

Inferno Chili Now! says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:17 am

Mud - I think it’s the KY people that have migrated up to the Cincy/Dayton area that brought the beans and cornbread with them. I love cornbread, but they pour the beans over it and it’s nasty like Miss Jackson.

Snapit says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:17 am

No problem. I thought it would be fun to post given the situation. However I fear that if Koy ever gets in the game we’ll have to tie pillows onto Wade, Williamson and Rice and tell the defense to back off.

And I know! Ty sounded like a little pansy.

MudHenVikeFan says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:17 am

Disco - I acquired a taste for Skyline while briefly at UC (3-way mostly), but not so much that I even bothered when they brought a franchise to Toledo. Chili’s not flavorful enough for me and the spaghetti just deadens the taste even more.

Have you had Packo’s? Ever been to the original restaurant?

MudHenVikeFan says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:19 am

King - can we rely on you to have an order from Stella’s delivered to Lambeau before the game? Make it two orders…let’s go for 400+ yards!

Inferno Chili Now! says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:19 am

Never heard of it before today.

Makes me think of a dirty elephant for some reason.

KingKC uhda TC says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:24 am

It’d be hard to make it all the way to Lambeau without eating it, but I’ll try my best to take one for the team.

MudHenVikeFan says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:29 am

Back to football…I wouldn’t be surprised if T-Will is inactive this week, or if active, doesn’t see the field much.

Viking Queen says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:29 am

And that would be different, how???

MudHenVikeFan says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:32 am

VQ - haha…totally missed my own pun.

Coach Childress says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:32 am

Koy and Kelly took me out for a night on the town last night to reminisce about our days in Philly. Just when I thought the night could not get any better Mike Mcmahanon showed up. Man I love my Eagle quarterbacks. *

* This anecdote in no way reflects which signal caller will be under center on Sunday.

KingKC uhda TC says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:37 am

By any chance was Todd Flaxton in attendance?

BUSTER RHYMES says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:38 am

Maybe TCrack should go to a Nike School too, I mean look at what it did for TWilly…… OK never mind…

FIRE CHILDRESS NOW !!!!!!

Coach Childress says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:38 am

I am not familiar with the individual in question at this juncture.

OhioViking1975 says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:41 am

I wonder what Fran thinks of our current group of QB’s??

MudHenVikeFan says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:49 am

King - that’s the stuff…if you like spicy, greasy, coronary-inducing goodness, you’ll love Packo’s.

MudHenVikeFan says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:50 am

Ohio - I’m sure Fran would think he could play better this week…sadly, he might be right.

KingKC uhda TC says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:51 am

Sounds like a place we have here in Mpls. called Kramarczuks.

Viking Queen says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:53 am

Seriously? It’s not even 10:00 and I’m starving. You guys suck.

2Minute Tommy says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:53 am

I’m not sure what Fran thinks but 2MT feels he has more to offer than what the current group has.

Viking Queen says:

November 7th, 2007 at 9:57 am

Now, I’m not a truck driver (although I may swear like one), but don’t they have to inspect the rig before hitting the road? How did you not notice this?

http://www.startribune.com/462/story/1534460.html

Inferno Chili Now! says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:01 am

Boiled zebra muscles for lunch?

Moonfan1 says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:01 am

Isn’t Drew Bledsoe out there??

What interested me was the note at the end…Surrency brought in for a tryout. . the Kansas City scrimmages. Did a lightbulb suddenly go on with someone at Winter Park? He never dropped a pass, ran great routes, and made adjustments to the ball…then they cut him.

The Vikings need this kid. He would be a great possession receiver.

KatoVikesFan says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:04 am

since it’s puker week, can we get some stupid drunk sconnie news? anyone?

MudHenVikeFan says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:05 am

Quirky thing about Packo’s…whenever a celebrity is in town and visits the restaurant, they have him/her sign a hot dog bun. They’re displayed, under glass on plaques, all over the place. Always fun when you’re seated to see which celebrities’ buns you’re sitting by.

MudHenVikeFan says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:07 am

Kato - yeah, where has GPG been anyway?!

jerkpepper says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:07 am

Emergency list of QB’s? Who has Koy Detmer on their short list? Noboby. Horrible!

State Of The Purple says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:09 am

The best news of the day:

“CB Ronyell Whitaker was waived”

FINALLY. If anyone remembers the Seattle game last year, then you can remember why this guy desperately needed to be cut.

Inferno Chili Now! says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:20 am

Mud - GPG said she’s having problems posting on the blog for some reason.

Judd and Kevin must have a team preference filter now…..

MudHenVikeFan says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:22 am

Well it’s about time :) …but perhaps they can allow an exception in GPG’s case.

KingKC uhda TC says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:23 am

It’s probably because of GO PACKERS (not to be confused with GO PACKERS GO).

Vike-N-The-Swamp says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:30 am

NFL Network is showing the Vikes replay game again right now. Almost half time.

jerkpepper says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:30 am

Dateline Madison, WI. A young man from Wisconsin….drunk…insert your story here.

Vike-N-The-Swamp says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:31 am

TJ just got hurt.

Viking Queen says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:35 am

Got to see it last night.

Vike-N-The-Swamp says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:36 am

Watched the game live on Sunday, but with the Replay it helps you see things more. 3 times before halftime the announcers kept saying maybe now they’ll just kneel on the ball.

BUSTER RHYMES says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:39 am

Yea - APAD ran for 296 yards again last night… You think the Chargers would have learned something from Sunday… guess not…..

FIRE CHILDRESS NOW !!!!!!!

Vike-N-The-Swamp says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:40 am

After Castillo’s injury in the 3rd quarter the Chargers surrendered 311 yards rushing!!!

Inferno Chili Now! says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:53 am

When I was stationed in Europe, they would show only 1 game each weekend and it would be on a delay. We would listen to the results on the radio and make bets with the newbies when the game was later televised. :D

Vike-N-The-Swamp says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:57 am

Inferno…that’s similar to when VCR’s came out and you could record Jeopardy and then wow your friends later and make some money.

MudHenVikeFan says:

November 7th, 2007 at 10:59 am

Swamp - I’m not sure that story reflects kindly on you or your friends :)

Vike-N-The-Swamp says:

November 7th, 2007 at 11:00 am

It’s when we were little, so much more gullable then.

State Of The Purple says:
